BLACK PROGRESS IN AMERICA WILL ADMINISTER ALL FUNDS RAISED, FOR SCHOLARSHIPS FOR POOR CHILDREN,UNCF, M.L.KINGCENTER AND OTHER NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS. • Recapturing the Essential Roots of Contemporary Black History the early sixties will be remembered as a milestone in the history of civil rights. In Birmingham, Alabama, a lame - duck city government responded to black demands for equality with force and hi utality. Thousands of school- children were arrested. Bull Connor's name became a household word. Police dogs, cattle prods, fire hoses, bombings —each became a symbol of rept csion to a people demonstrating to he free. On August 28, 1963, millions of Americans watched and heard Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. awaken the consciousness of a nation at the Great _ Ntarch on Washington totr for Jobs and freedom. Ilis historic refrain begin- ning "I have a dream", and ending with the words that would one day mark his grave "Free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty I'm free at last". became a spiritual cry enlighten- ing an America possessed by bigotry and racial shame. A young Arthur Langford, Jr. marched tor freedom with Dr. King. lie was only a college freshman when the great cis it rights leader was killed by an assassin's bullet in 1968. But rather than just mourn King, Langford im- mortaliied his spirit, power and sense ,.)f hope in his critically acclaimed play. The Lift'ufA King. Warmly supported and appreciated by Loretta Scott King, the Rev. Ralph Abernathy, Atlanta Mayor Maynard Jackson, Julian Bond and other leaders of the black community. ' n Montgomery, Alabama, in December, 1955, Mrs. Rosa Parks was arrested for violation of the segregation laws; she had refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man. Martin Luther King Jr., the young, new minister at the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, joined others in organizing a one -day boycott of the buses. The Montgomery Improvement Association was formed and elected King president. In the next months city officials turned down the modest demands made to them that "partial" courtesy be shown to Negro passengers; King was arrested for the first time in his life; mass meetings were held, and the Negro community remained firm. On November 13, 1956, the Supreme Court ruled that segregation on buses was unconstitutional. And the bus boycott was called off. In the twelve years of nonviolent struggle for human rights and freedom which fol- lowed the bus boycott, Martin Luther King Jr, grew as an orator, an organizer, a writer, and philosopher, but he never abandoned his principles of peace and love. r STEPHEN P.
