A Shutt to CULTUkt THE ARTS ARE NOT A LUXURY They are indispensable. They shape our thoughts, our feelings, our actions. They make our environment stimu- lating and our lives worthwhile. We are all concerned about the quality of life in our community and about the education of our children and the environment which they will inherit, From January 16, through February 19, 1978, Greater Miami will celebrate its second Salute to Culture, jointly Spon- sored by the bade County Council of Arts and Sciences and the Cultural Executives Council, Show your concern by contacting the Dade County Council of Arts and Sciences, at 579-5311 Extension 135. 1 INTRODUCTION Business today is showing an increasing concerti for "Culture" and rightly so: there can be no human progress without the inspiration intellectual, imaginative, disturbing. of the arts and sciences. In all ages considered great by history, society's primary managers of wealth =- kings, bishops, aristocrats and industrial leaders have accepted this obligation. In America today, the comparable source of wealth is the corporation. Why should a corporation support the arts? bavid Rockefeller has said, "Too often the tendency is to regard the arts as something pleasant but peripheral. I feel the time has come when we must accord them a primary position as essential to the nation's well-being." The arts are essential to business in specific ways -- they serve as an important attraction to highly trained and educated managerial and professional personnel; they provide unparalleled opportunities for business to render important service to the community with great returns in visibility and good will; they provide the community with the theatres, concert halls and museums of art and science which attract visitors and which contribute significantly to the volume of business in their areas. The arts and sciences as they expand and multiply throughout the country, require both the financial support and managerial skills of the business community. Corporations can provide a good deal more than money to enrich our cultural life. Equipment, space technical skills and the encouragement of executives to serve on the boards of arts organizations and arts councils -- all are needed. Business itself has been enormously enriched by its free inheritance from past generations. The only way to dis- charge this honest debt is to hand over to the future a country and a society truly responsive to the deepest needs of its people. PURPOSES The purposes of the second Salute to Culture are: 1. To involve all citizens of our multi -ethnic community in the wealth of cultural resources that exists in Dade County, 2. To involve all of the arts and sciences, from the largest instituion to the smallest "grass roots" group, in order to develop the most comprehensive representation of our community's diverse cultural activities. 3. To further involve the business community in improving the quality of life and strengthen the economic impact of the cultural community on Dade County. 4. To involve our local and state legislators in the on- going activities and needs of our cultural community. 2 Pgb6rAMS (Calendar of events to be attached when finali2ed) What the Cultural Community will be doing Special Public Performances and Exhibitions: A series of presentations free of charge to the public will be presented throughout Dade County, These will include: a. The presentation of outreach programs to bring the arts and sciences to those individuals not in the cultural mainstream. 2. Panel Discussions and Seminars: To further understanding and create closer cooperation between our cultural institutions and their potential audience and thereby between our various ethnic communities, between political leaders and their constituents, and between businesses, the media and the arts and sciences, a series of panel discussions and seminars will be conducted. a.
