Although \\e have mild rain showers most of the sear. we do have a season of frequent and often heavy rains that start in May and go through October. Usually. the most intense rains occur during the months o1 June and October. Coupled with these rains and the fact that our area is also low and fairly flat. \yc have problems in draining. collecting and disposing of rainwater. In the early days of 'Miami with much of the land area undeveloped. few drainage problems were encountered. but with more and more paved parking lots. hard surfaced streets. buildings and lot to lot coverage, the drainage conditions are more severe. To Netter understand the prohlems of drainage in South Horida, some information on the groundwater relationship to the ground surface, rainwater effect on the groundwater le\el. soil conditions and tides is gi\en on the following pages. Also, we briefly discuss the criteria and standards used as a basis for our storm sewer design. I his information is furnished so von will he aware that e\en with the hest possihle storm drainage system in use, occasionally some water will pond in the street after an aho\l' a\cral•e rain. 0 DRENAJE PLUVIAL EN EL SUR DE LA FLORIDA. 1 1 Stir do Ia rim -Rh c• una it,lta suh Iru}i.al .Iendtl rite t•.l,i su eta :I ult,l tentpurada de Iluvtas. \utltlne la in.tparlc tlel ant, e\Istell llll\1;1. Then it gradually seeps through the soil and rock beneath the surface into the underground ‘yater causing a rise in the level of the groundwater. From literature Supplied by various government agencies which have studied the science of handling water and the soils of South Florida. we find. as a general rule. that the level of groundwater rises an additional six inches for every inch of intense rainfall. "This higher criteria is justified since water standing for even a short period of time in heavy traffic is a serious problem. For local struts, the City of Miami's system is designed for a rainfall intensity of one and one -halt inches per hour for one hour. Based on this standard we can expect to hale pond ing on our streets about three or tour tinges a year when this intensity is exceeded, 1 his condition on local streets is nllt considered a serious problem if the water runs of or recedes within two or three hours after the rain. Howe\er. water standing for long periods of time is one of our worst problems and it is these areas where the water stands the longest, and the site of the pond ing t he greater. that we try to correct first.
