HomeMy WebLinkAboutO-08741RPC! rb 193t 3 ORDINANCE Ne r /.t AN ORD/NANCE CREATING A NEW DEPART ENT TO RE KNOWN AS THE DEPARTMENT OP CONFERENCES AND CONVENTIONS, PROVIDING FOR THE APPOINT= MENT OP A DIRECTOR BY THE CITY MANAGER; PRESCRIBING THE FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES OP THE DEPARTMENT; CONTAINING A REPEALER PROVISION AND A SEVERADttItTY CLAUSE; AND DISPENSING WITH THE REQUIREMENT OP READ/NO THt SAME ON TWO SEPARATE DAYS BY A VOTE OP N01' LESS THAN POUR -rims OP THE HE IBERS OP THE COMMISSION. WHEREAS, Section 19A of the Charter of the City of Miami provides that the Commission may create Hero depart- tents or discontinue any department and determine, combine, and distribute the functions and duties of departments and subdivisions thereof; and ,. WHEREAS, it is the desire of the Commission to exercise such authority and to create a new department to be known as the Department of Conferences and Conventions, and to distribute and transfer to it certain functions and duties heretofore primarily performed by the Department of Publicity and Tourism; and WHEREAS, the general public may then be served in a more efficient and satisfactory manner; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. There is hereby created a department to be known as the Department of Conferences and Conventions. Section 2. The City Manager is hereby authorized to appoint a director of the Department of Conferences and Conventions. The Director shall administer the affairs of the Department subject to the supervision and control of the City Manager in all matters. The Director of the Department will be the Director of the City of Miami/University of Miami James L. Knight International. Center. The aforesaid Division shall also forthwith begin the process of booking conventions into the facility it conjunction with the University of Miami's Conference Center. (b) The Convention SerVioes Division shall hence- forth perform, for the entire community, the activities of convention research, solicitation and servicing.- 1/ Section 4. It is declared to be the legislative intent of this body that if any section, subsection, sentence, phrase , word, or provision of this ordinance is held invalid, the remainder of the ordinance shall not be affected. Section 5. All ordinances or parts of ordinances insofar as they are inconsistent or in conflict with the pro- visions of this ordinance are hereby repealed. Section 6. The requirement of reading this ordinance on two separate days is hereby dispensed with by a vote of not less than four -fifths of the members of the Commission.
