HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-02626>F--- CP RESOLUTION NO. 2626. A RESOLUTION URGING THE CONVEYANCE BY THE UNITED STATES TO DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, FOR STREW PURPOSES, CERTAIN LANDS. WHEREAS, the Government Aviation Field, known as Chapman Field, located a few miles South of the City of Miami, in Dade County, has ceased to be used by the Government as an avian tioa or flying field or for other governmental pur poe es ; and, WHEREAS, this Board has been informed that the United States officials having the grounds oomposing the said aviation field in charge, which oonsists of approximately some eight hundred acres of ground, have determined tha t the United. States Govern- ment will no longer use the said property for any governmental purposes but will probably dispose of the same, save and except a small portion thereof which has heretofore been set aside to be used by the Government for agricultural experimental purposes; and, WHEREAS, the tract referred to was selected by competent Gov- ernment representatives some years ago as the most available site for an aviation field in this seotion of the Couiity, the ground lying, as it does, only a few miles South of the City of Miami, and bordering upon the waters of Biscayne Bay, a portion of the said tract having, at a great cost to the Government, been converted into one of the best aviation flying fields in this portion of the United States, and made peculiarly valuable for aeroplane landings and general aviation purposes; and WHEREA, it has become apparent to all thoughtful people that on account of the rapid advancement being made in aerial trans- portation for mil, passenger and possible freight service, ade- quate and well located landing places for aeroplanes and airships will shortly become a necessi tr in all thickly populated communi- ties which desire to be served by that method of transportation; and, ,'HERE,:, in addition to the growing necessity for aviation landing fields in the vicinity of the lzirge centers of population, there is ever present the possibility of war with some foreign power, in which case, should such an occasion unfortunately arise, flying fields and landing grounds for air planes and aircraft in this section of the oountry will be an absolute public nceaSi-i ty, and one which this Board feels the Government authorities et the 'United States Should have in mind, with a riew if to the proper proteotion of the public interests oentered in this section of Florida; and, WHEREAS, all of the land in the vicinity of the Cityof Miami, adequately located for aviation purposes, has become so valuable that it is impractical to attempt to purchase the same in suffioien ly large areas for the purposes referred to; and, WHEREAS, in addition to use for aviation purposes, the said lands embraced in Chapman Field could be used by the County for Fair and Exposition purposes, and oould be put to such other publics uses, for which, from time to time, the County and Municipal Govern- mental authorities, determine to be best for the public interests, and the said Chapman Field is now ideally located for suoh purposes and should be reserved for the public use as such; THEREFORE, in view of what this Board believes to be the public: interests in the instant case, it does now resolve as follows; lat. That the Senators and Members of the House of Representa- tives from Florida, be, and they are hereby, respectfully urged and petitioned to introduce into Congress a bill or bills authorizing and requiring the conveyance by the United States to the County of Dade for the publio pur poses above indicated, all of the lands embraced in said Chapman Field not heretofore set aside fol agri- cultural experimental purposes, reserving. in the Government the rig:t to use the same in cases of war or threatened war, and to use all honorable and legitimate r:eans available to cause said bill or bills to be enacted into luw at the eurliest practical moment. 2nd. That certified copies of these resolutions be forwarded to each of the enators from this btate and to each of the members of the House of Representatives from Florida, all of whom are re- oue ted to ussist in securingthe passage of the lezislation above oetitioned for, 3rd. That the various municipalities located within the said County of Jude, and all of the civic bodies situated therein, be, .3- and they are hereby, respectfully requested to assist, go far as lies within their power, in securing the enactment of the legisla- tion above referred to.
