Hannon City Clerk Ad No. 43777 I MAN WIND Ta Israel says it killed key Hamas spokesman as cabinet meets ST DAN WILLU11I6 eloanberr news Israel claimed it killed an iconic Hamas spokes- man a Gaza City air strike, and said more such blows would follow if a sweep of the Pal- estinian Islamist faction's last stronghold goes ahead as planned. Hamas hasn't com- mented on the condition or whereabouts of Abu Obeida since Saturday's attack, which it said in- flicted dozens of casu- alties in the al-Rimal neighborhood as part of an attempt to prompt an exodus of civilians. Abu Obeida -whose real name is Hudahaifa Kahlout, according to the Israel Defense Forces - had become been the masked face of Hamas' armed wing, making televised appearances with only his eyes visible behind a keffiyeh, the traditional headdress worn by Arab men. Dur- ing the almost two -year - old war with Israel, many Palestinian looked to him for updates on the fighting and on hostages held by Hamas. "The Hamas terror spokesman has been eliminated," Israeli De- fense Minister Israel Katz said on Sunday in a post on X, adding that Abu Ubeida would soon "meet many more of his crimi- nal associates." Without Abu Obeida, Hamas has three senior figures left in the Gaza Strip. One is ran al -Din al - Haddad, a Northem Bri- gade commander pro- moted in May to nun the group. Another is veteran chief of operations Reed Saad, and the third is Hussein Fayyad, head of Hamas in the now -de- stroyed town of Beit Ha - noun. All three are be- lieved to be holed up in Gaza City along with thousands of fighters. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was due on Sunday to con- vene his security cabinet for new talks following the decision on Aug. 8 to send troops and tanks into Gaza City, which is among about 25% of the Palestinian enclave not yet overrun by Israel's army. It's also home to as many as one million civil- ian. The aim, Netanyahu has said, is to crush Ha- mas and recover the re- maining 48 hostages held in Gaza, most of them taken in the Oct 7, 2023, surprise attack on Israel in which about 1,200 people were killed and 250 kidnapped. Twenty hostages are believed to be alive, and many Is- raelis fear that they could be executed or become cross -fire casualties in the event of more escalation. Several world powers have condemned Netan- yahu's Gaza City plan, saying it will aggravate a spieling humanitarian crisis for Palestinians and FROM PAGE 64 WEST BANK Palestinian state," said Israel Ganz, who heads the Jewish settler move- ment in the Wen Bank and presides over the Binyamin regional council of several dozen settle- ments not far from Maale Adumim. On Tuesday evening, he and his council held a gala dinner to celebrate the announcement of 17 new settlements in his region. Netanyahu was the guest of honor. "1 promised 25 years ago that we would deepen our roots, and we have done so, together," Is - eel's longest -serving leader told the gathering. "I said we would prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state, and we are doing that, together. I said that we would build and hold fast to our land, our homeland. and we are doing it. And this is not the end - this is the begin- ning." Netanyahu's stance has shifted, given he appeared to embrace the prospect of a Palestinian state for several years. In 2011, he said in a speech to the U.S. Congress that "a Palestinian state must be big enough to be viable, independent and prosper - Recently, and especially following the 2023 attack by Hamas, he's aban- doned that idea, arguing that the Palestinian move- ment is in the grip of extremists like Hamas, designated a terrorist organization by the U.S. and many other govern- ments. At the dinner, Ganz told Netanyahu what he's been saying for years - Israel should extend its sover- eignty over some 70% of the West Bank, leaving the rest for Palestinians to oversee basic services and the economy, with securi- ty in the hands of Israel. In E-1, Arara, the Be- douin, was asked whether he believed the move to build more Jewish housing might somehow be stopped. No, he said. "This is a government of settlers." result in reoccupation by Israel. The U.S., however, is backing its ally and plans to expand an aid network, the Gars Hu- manitarian Foundation, to help cope with dis- placed Palestinians. After months of stalled negotiations, Hamas on Aug. 18 accepted a trace proposal by Arab media- tors. Two previous cease- fires allowed Israel to rernver me hostages inreturn for freeing Pal- estinian prisoners, during which time Gaza stocked up on supplies. But Israel has now taken an all -or -nothing tack, saying the only way to avert the Gaza City sweep is for Hamas to hand over the hostages and lay down its arms. "We are already seeing a flexibility in the Hamas position," Energy Minis- ter Eli Cohen, a member of the security cabinet, told Kol Barama radio. "We are poised to take action to defeat Hamas, and our demand is for a full deal - a deal that will bring back all 48 hostages -those who are alive as well as those who aren't" The Hamas-run health ministry -which doesn't distinguish between com- batant and civilian casu- alties -said on Friday that over 63,000 Pal- estinians have died dur- ing the subsequent war. Israel has lost more than 450 soldiers in Gaza combat. SpaceX has flown all but four of the 74 orbital launches that have taken off from the Space Coast this year, which is closing in on surpassing the record 93 launches from all com- panies the region saw in 2024, a milestone that could be met by the end of October. Space Launch Delta 45, which oversees the Eastern Range and supports all rocket launches from the Space Coast, had stated it could support as many as 156 launchesa year. While not expected to hit that mark, SpaceX's increased pace has also been paired with the re- cent return to a normal flight rate from ULA, which has had three launches so far this year, but plans to fly as many as five more among its re- maining Atlas V rockets and growing supply of Vulcan. Its next mission is on tap for the end of the month, when an Atlas V is target- ing a Sept. 25 launch from Canaveral's Space Launch Complex 41 with 27 satel- lites for Amazon's Project Kuiper, a competitor to SpaceX's Starlink Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin flew the other launch of the three providers that have flown from the Space Coast when it debuted its heavy4ift New Glenn rocket in January. Hannon City Clerk Ad No. 43778 4A MIAMI HERALD I I MONDAY SBTERIN 12005 FROM PAGE 3A EXECUTIONS appeal, said. "No money or valuables were found on either victim or in Mrs. Nestor's purse which was found on the couch in the main office next to the defendant. The evidence also was consistent with Mr. Nes- tor's body having been rolled over after he col- lapsed so that personal property could be re- moved from his pockets." Jones was convicted of two counts of first -degree murder and two counts of armed robbery. FLORIDA ESTABLISHING NEW SINGLE -YEAR EXECUTION RECORD The death warrant likely will touch off legal battles about whether Jones should be execut- ed. DeSantis also has signed a death warrant for David Pittman, who is scheduled to be executed on Sept. 17. Pittman, now 63, was convicted in the 1990 murders of three family members of his estranged wife in Polk County. Before this year, Flor- ida's record for execu- tions in a year during the modern era was eight in 1984 and 2014. The mod- em era represents the time since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976 after a 1972 U.S. Supreme Court ruling halted it. In addition to Windom, inmates executed this year were Kayle Bates on Aug. 19; Edward Zakr- zewski on July 31; Mi- chael Bell on July 15; Thomas Gudinas on June 24; Anthony Wainwright on June 10; Glen Rogers on May 15; Jeffrey Hutch- inson on May 1; Michael Tanzi on April 8; Edward James on March 20; and James Ford on Feb.13. Tonal killed Miami Herald employee Janet Acosta in 2000. FROM PAGE 3A ELECTION rehearing before the appellate court. If the appellate court denies that request, the city could then ask the Flor- ida Supreme Court to hear the case. if the Mia- mi case doesn't advance further, the Gables mayor wants his city to be in position to put the elec- tion issue on the ballot. WHEN WOULD CORAL GABLES HAVE A SPECIAL ELECTION? The plan would be to hold a special election on April 21, 2026, although Coral Gables would still need to finalize the date with the county's Super- visor of Elections office. The election will be by mail only, which means Gables voters should make sure their voter registration has a current address on file. Gables voters will also be asked to weigh in on other issues, including whether to contract with Miami -Dade County or a private firm to provide inspector general serv- ices. Inspector general offices have the power to conduct independent internal audits and in- vestigations. In May, commissioners initially approved Lago's initia- tive to put this question to voters during a special election on Nov. 3, 2026. WHY DO COMMISSIONERS SUPPORT, OPPOSE CHANGING GABLES ELECTION DATE? Tuesday's vote passed 3-1, with Lago, Anderson and Commissioner Rich- ard Lan optimistic that voters would choose November elections, stating the change would save the city thousands in election -related costs, increase voter turnout and be in line with over 20 other municipalities that have moved their elections to November. The trio said they cam- paigned on platforms that included having Novem- ber elections. The only no vote was Commissioner Melissa Castro, who has opposed moving elections to No- vember without voter input and has raised con- cerns that November elections would allow partisan politics to "over- shadow local voices." Commissioner Ariel Fernandez was absent for Tuesday's vote. He previ- ously voted in May against changing election dates. After the vote, Castro told the Miami Herald she supports having a ballot question on the election date issue, de- scribing Tuesday as a "historic victory for the residents of Coral Ga- bles." During the meet- ing, Castro disputed the cost of holding a special election. She wanted to revert to the previously scheduled April 2027 elections and then let voters cast a ballot on whether future elections should be held in Novem- ber. 19; Edward Zakr- zewslo on July 31; Mi- chael Bell on July 15; Thomas Gudinas on June 24; Anthony Wainwright on June 10; Glen Rogers on May 13; Jeffrey Hutch- inson on May 1; Michael Taozi on April 8; Edward James on March 20; and James Ford on Feb.13. "Canal killed Miami Herald employee Janet Acosta in 2000. FROM PAGE lA ELECTION rehearing before the appellate court. In May, commissioners initially approved Lago'sinitia- tive to put this question to voters during a special election on Nov. 3, 2026. WHY DO COMMISSIONERS SUPPORT, OPPOSE CHANGING GABLES ELECTION DATE? Tuesday's vote passed 3-1, with Lago, Anderson and Commissioner Rich- ard Lara optimistic that voters would choose November elections, stating the change would save the city thousands in election -related costs, increase voter turnout and be in line with over 20 other municipalities that have moved their elections to November. The trio said they cam- paigned on platforms that included having Novem- ber elections. The only no vote was Commissioner Melissa Castro, who has opposed moving elections to No- vember without voter input and has raised con- cerns that November elections would allow partisan politics to "over- shadow local voices." Commissioner Apel Fernandez was absent for Tuesday's vote. Hannon City Clerk Ad No. 43780 MOIdY 11,1E111111 1 MB Mil I la Israel says it killed key Hamas spokesman as cabinet meets BY DAN WILLIAMS Nm.sox Mort Israel claimed it killed an iconic Hamas spokes- man in a Gaza City air - strike, and said more such blows would follow if a sweep of the Pal- estinian Islamist faction's last stronghold goes ahead as planned. Hamas hasn't com- mented on the condition or whereabouts of Abu Obeide since Saturday's attack which it said in- flicted dozens of casu- alties in the al-itimal neighborhood as part of an attempt to prompt an exodus of civilians. Abu Obeida -whose real name is Hudahaifa Kahlout, according to the Israel Defense Forces - had become been the masked face of Hamas' armed wing, making televised appearances with only his eyes visible behind a keffiyeh, the traditional headdress wom by Arab men. Dur- ing the almost two -year - old war with Israel, many Palestinians looked to him for updates on the fighting and on hostages held by Hamas. One is I. al -Din al - Haddad, a Northem Bri- gade commander pro- moted in May to run the group. Another is veteran chief of operations Raed Saad, and the third is Hussein Fayyad, head of Hamas in the now -de- stroyed town of Beit Ha - noun. It's also home to as many as one million civil- ians. Several world powers have condemned Netan- yahTt's Gaza City plan, saying it will aggravate a spiraling humanitarian crisis for Palestinians and FROM PAGE 6A WEST BANK Palestinian state," said Israel Ganz, who heads the Jewish settler move- ment in the West Bank and presides over the Binyamin regional council of several dozen settle- ments not far from Maale Adumim. On Tuesday evening, he and his council held a gala dinner to celebrate the announcement of 17 new settlements in his region. Netanyahu was the guest of honor. "I promised 25 years ago that we would deepen our roots, and we have done so, together," ls- rael's longest -serving leader told the gathering. "1 said we would prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state, and we are doing that, together. 1 said that we would build and hold fast to our land, our homeland, and we are doing it. And this is not the end - this is the begin- ning." Netanyahu's nonce has shifted, given he appeared to embrace the prospect of a Palestinian state for several years. The U.S., however, is tracking its ally and plans to expand an aid network, the Gaza Hu- manitarian Foundation, to help cope with dis- placed Palestinians. After months of stalled negotiations, Hamas on Aug. 18 accepted a truce proposal by Arab media- tors. Two previous cease - tires allowed Israel to recover me hostages in remm for freeing Pal- estinian prisoners, during which time Gaza stocked upon supplies. "We are poised to take action to defeat Mamas, and our demand is for a full deal - a deal that will bring back all 48 hostages -those who are alive as well as those who aren't" The Hamas-ram health ministry - which doesn't d stinguish between com- batant and civilian casu- alties - said on Friday that over 63,000 Pal- e tinians have died dur- ing the subsequent war. Among those launches were the final crewed mission from Florida this year, the Aug.1 launch of Crew-11, and the return of Boeing's X-3711 mini space shuttleto space for a classi- fied Space Force mission. ULA's lone mission was its first national security flightfor its new Vulcan rocket. All interested persons are invited to attend. For more information, please contact the Midtown CRA office at (305) 679-6868. Midtown Community Redevelopment Agency AD 43781 has two more launches on tap this week to start would could be an even busier September, with Starlink missions planned from Canaveral's SLC-40 on Wednesday during a window that rams from 7:06-11:06 a.m., and then Thursday from Kennedy Space Center Launch Pad 39-A during a launch win- dow from 7:18-11:18 a.m. Later this month, Falcon 9 rockets are slated to launch a resupply mission with Northrop Grumman's Cygnus spacecraft to the International Space Sta- tion on Sept. 15 and then a science mission with mul- tiple payloads for the Na- tional Oceanic and Atmo- spheric Administration and NASA no earlier than Sept. 23 as well as more Starlink flights. SpaceX has flown all but four of the 74 orbital launches that have taken off from the Space Coast this year, which is closing in n surpassing the record 93 launches from all com- panies the region saw in 2024, a milestone that could be met by the end of October. The pace continues to climb, with 2023 having en 72 overall launches from Florida. Space Launch Delta 45, which oversees the Eastern Range and supports all rocket launches from the Space Coast, had stated it could support as many as 1561aunchesa year. While not expected to hit that mark, SpaceX's increased pace has also been paired with the re- cent return to a normal fight rate from ULA, which has had three launches so far this year, but plans to fly as many as five more among its re- maining Atlas V rockets and growing supply of Vulcan. Its next mission is on tap for the end of the month, when an Arias V is target- ing a Sept. 25 launch from Canaveral's Space Launch Complex 41 with 27 satel- lites for Amazon's Project Kuiper, a competitor to SpaceX's Starlink jeff Bozos' Blue Origin flew the other launch of the three providers that have flown from the Space Coast when it debuted its heavy -lift New Glenn rocket in January. its next flight could also be at the end of the month, with the company still targeting no earlier than Sept. 29 to fly a pair of spacecraft for NASA to Man. Hannon City Clerk Ad No. 43785 4A i IAAle HERALD I NNW SPRI1®12025 FROM PAGE 3A EXECUTIONS appeal, said. "No money' or valuables were found on either victim or in Mrs. Before this year, Flor- ida's record for execu- tions in a year during the modem era was eight in 1984 and 2014. The mod- em era represents the time since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976 after a 1972 U.S. Supreme Court ruling halted it. 1n addition to Windom, inmates executed this year were Kayle Bates on Aug. 19; Edward Zakr- aewski on July 31; Mi- chael Bell on July 15; Thomas Gudinas on June 24; Anthony Wainwright on June 10; Glen Rogers on May 15; Jeffrey Hutch - on on May 1; Michael Tanzi on April 8; Edward James on March 20; and James Ford on Feb.13. Tanzi killed Miami Herald employee Janet Acosta in 2000. The election will be by mail only, which means Gables voters should make sure their voter registration has a current address on tile. 3, 2026. WHY DO COMMISSIONERS SUPPORT. OPPOSE CHANGING GABLES ELECTION DATE? Tuesday's vote passed 3-1, with Lago, Anderson and Commissioner Rich- ard Lara optimistic that voters would choose November elections, stating the change would save the city thousands in election -related costs, increase voter turnout and be in line with over 20 other municipalities that have moved their elections to November. The trio said they cam- paigned on platforms that included having Novem- ber elections. She wanted to revert to the previously scheduled April 2027 elections and then let voters cast a ballot on whether future elections should be held to Novem- ber.
