Israel says it killed key Hamas
spokesman as cabinet meets
BYO. WILLIAALS
Bloomberg Nms
Israel claimed it killed
an iconic Hamas spokes-
man in a Gaza City air -
strike, and said more
such blows would follow
if a sweep of the Pal-
estinian Islamist faction's
last stronghold goes
ahead as planned.
Hamas hasn't com-
mented on the condition
or whereabouts of Abu
Obeida since Saturday's
attack, which it said in-
flicted dozens of casu-
alties in the al-Rimal
neighborhood as part of
an attempt to prompt an
exodus of civilians.
Abu Obeida —whose
real name is Hudahaifa
Kahlout, according to the
Israel Defense Forces —
had become been the
masked face of Hamas'
armed wring, making
televised appearances
with only his eyes visible
behind a keftiyeh, the
traditional headdress
worn by Arab men. Dur-
ing the almost two -year -
old war with Israel, many
Palestinians looked to
him for updates on the
fighting and on hostages
held by Hamas.
"The Hamas terror
spokesman has been
eliminated," Israeli De-
fense Minister Israel Katz
said on Sunday in a post
an X, adding that Abu
Ubeida would soon "meet
many more of his crimi-
nal associates."
Without Abu Obeida,
Hamas has three senior
figures left in the Gaza
Strip.
One is lzz al -Din al -
Haddad, a Northern Bri-
gade commander pro-
moted in May to ran the
group. Another is veteran
chief of operations Reed
Saari, and the third is
Hussein Fayyad, head of
Hamas in the now -de-
stroyed town of Beit Ha -
noun. All three are be-
lieved to be holed up in
Gaza City along with
thousands of fighters.
Israeli Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu was
due on Sunday to con-
vene his security cabinet
for new talks following
the decision on Aug. 8 to
send troops and tanks
into Gaza City, which is
among about 25% of the
Palestinian enclave not
yet overrun by Israel's
army. It's also home to as
many as one million civil-
ians.
The aim, Netanyahu
has said, is to crush Ha-
mas and recover the re-
maining 48 hostages held
in Gaza, most of them
taken in the Oct. 7, 2023,
surprise attack on Israel
in which about 1,200
people were killed and
250 kidnapped. Twenty
hostages are believed to
be alive, and many Is-
raelis fear that they could
be executed or become
cross -fire casualties in the
event of more escalation.
Several world powers
have condemned Netan-
yahu's Gaza City plan,
saying it will aggravate a
spiraling humanitarian
crisis for Palestinians and

Palestinian state," said
Israel Ganz, who heads
the Jewish settler move-
ment in the West Bank
and presides over the
Binyamin regional council
of several dozen settle-
ments not far from Istaale
Adumim.
On Tuesday evening, he
and his council held a gala
dinner to celebrate the
announcement of 17 new
settlements in his region
Netanyahu was the guest
of honor.
"1 promised 25 years
ago that we would deepen
our roots, and we have
done so, together," Is-
rael's longest -serving
leader told the gathering.
"I said we would prevent
the establishment of a
Palestinian state, and we
are doing that, together. I
said that we would build
and hold fast to our land,
our homeland, and we are
doing it. And this is not
the end - this is the begin-
ning."
Netanyahu's stance has
shifted, given he appeared
to embrace the prospect
of a Palestinian state for
everal years. In 2011, he
said in a speech to the
U.S. Congress that "a
Palestinian state must be
big enough to be viable,
independent and prosper -
Recently, and especially
following the 2023 attack
by Hamas, he's aban-
doned that idea, arguing
that the Palestinian move-
ment is in the grip of
extremists like Hamas,
designated a terrorist
organization by the U.S.
and many other govern-
ments.
At the dinner, Ganz told
Netanyahu what he's been
saying for years — Israel
should extend its sover-
eignty over some 70% of
the West Bank, leaving
the rest for Palestinians to
oversee basic services and
the economy, with securi-
ty in the hands of Israel.
In E-1, Amra, the Be-
douin, was asked whether
he believed the move to
build more Jewish housing
might somehow be
stopped. No, he said.
"This is a government of
settlers."
result in reoccupation by
Israel. The U.S., however,
is backing its ally and
plans to expand an aid
network, the Gaza Hu-
manitarian Foundation,
to help cope with dis-
placed Palestinians.
After months of stalled
negotiations, Hamas an
Aug.18 accepted a trace
proposal by Arab media-
tors. Two previous cease-
fires allowed Israel to
recover some hostages in
return for freeing Pal-
estinian prisoners, during
which time Gaza stocked
up on supplies.
But Israel has now
taken an all -or -nothing
tack, saying the only way
to avert the Gaza City
sweep is for Hamas to
hand over the hostages
and lay down its arms.
"We are already seeing
a flexibility in the Hamas
position," Energy Minis-
ter Eli Cohen, a member
of the security cabinet,
told K01 Barama radio.
"We are poised to take
action to defeat Hamas,
and our demand is for a
tWl deal —a deal that will
bring back all 48 hostages
—those who are alive as
well as those who aren't"
The Hamas-run health
ministry —which doesn't
d'stinguish between com-
batant and civilian casu-
alties —said on Friday
that over 63,000 Pal-
e tinians have died dur-
ing the subsequent war.

would could be an even
busier September, with
Starlink missions planned
from Canaveral's SLC-40
on Wednesday during a
window that runs from
7:06-11:06 a.m., and then
Thursday from Kennedy
Space Center Launch Pad
39-A during a launch win-
dow from 7118-11:18 a.m.
Later this month, Falcon
9 rockets are slated to
launch a resupply mission
with Northrop Grumman's
Cygnus spacecraft to the
International Space Sta-
tion on Sept. 15 and then a
science mission with mul-
tiple payloads for the Na-
tional Oceanic and Atmo-
spheric Administration
and NASA no earlier than
Sept. 23 as well as more
Starlink flights.
SpaceX has flown all but
four of the 74 orbital
launches that have taken
off from the Space Coast
this year, which is closing
in on surpassing the record
93 launches from all com-
panies the region saw in
2024, a milestone that
could be met by the end of
October.
The pace continues to
climb, with 2023 having
seen 72 overall launches
from Florida. Space
Launch Delta 45, which
oversees the Eastem
Range and supports all
rocket launches from the
Space Coast, had stated it
could support as many as
156 launchesa year.
While not expected to
hit that mark, SpaceX's
increased pace has also
been paired with the re-
cent return to a normal
Bight rate from ULA,
which has had three
launches so far this year,
but plans to fly as many as
five more among its re-
maining Atlas V rockets
and growing supply of
Vulcan.
Its next mission is on tap
for the end of the month,
when an Atlas V is target-
ing a Sept. 25 laanch from
Canaveral's Space Launch
Complex 41 with 27 satel-
lites for Amazon's Project
Kuiper, a competitor to
SpaceX's Starlink
Jeff Bozos' Blue Origin
flew the other launch of
the three providers that
have flown from the Space
Coast when it debuted its
heavy -lift New Glenn
rocket in January. Its next
flight could also be at the
end of the month, with the
company still targeting no
earlier than Sept. 29 to fly
a pair of spacecraft for
NASA to Mars.
