We. the S. H. Kress & Oo., of Miami, Florida, herewith re-
epeotfully ask your kind permiealon in granting us the author-
ity whioh will permit us to lower the present epees whioh we
now hold title to and 000upy beneath the sidewalk in front of
our premises at Number 26 to 82 Bast Flagler Street. Miami.
Florida.
This existing space, measuring 11.16 feet wide by 14.25 feet
long, begins at a point 5.25. feet west of the west faoe of our
east wall. The average depth of the present space is 6.00
feet.
The sidewalk hoist with whioh we are ohiefly concerned, 000upye
a space 5.50 feet by 5.50 feet in the northwest corner of the
spaoe herein described above. This hoist also has an 18 inch
pit beneath it for the operating maohinery.
In view of the proposed type of construction of our new base-
ment, whereby we find it imperative to install double 20 inoh
I -Beam spandrels along the building line at the first floor
level, the result is that the head room from under side of
beam flange to finish floor at this point (which is likewise on
the building line) is only 3.66 feet, most insuffioient for our
purpose of receiving the bulky freight and merchandise that we
do, and also inadequate for our business.
In view of this fact, it is vitally essential that we lower the
present hoist and space down to the level of our new basement
floor, necessitating a drop of 5.70 feet below the present lev-
el. It is not our intention to ohange the looation of the
present hoist or the existing trap doors in the sidewalk. What
we plan to do in this matter is only to remove the present doors
and frame, replaoing same in the same location with a better
designed type of doors, that finish perfectly flush with the
sidewalk, and whioh are to be water tight, and also possessing

the necessary type and number of gnat& bars when open.
If we are granted the privilege of lowering our pros -
'ant space as before outlined, the City aan be smeared
that same will be designed and oonetruoted in a000rd-
anoe with the beet known methods of engineering and oon-
etruction. It is our intention to remove a eertain
portion of the lower part of the present enolosure walla
together with the footings of same. From this point
down we shall eeourely underpin all walla with new re-
inforced oonorete walls of 18 inohee in thioknese, in
eluding a three inob Gunite waterproofing shell applied
directly on to the side of the excavated rook. The
new floor to be installed in this portion will be 16
inohee in thioknees, of heavily reinforced oonorete, as
the walls, both of which will be thoroughly waterproofed,
both intrigally and extremely in a000rdanoe with the para-
mount methods known to hydrostatio waterproofing.
It is furthermore our intention to line the inside face of
both side walls above the present floor level, with 6 inohee
of reinforced concrete and wateroroofin2,, thus eliminat-
ing any demolition of sidewalk or street in thickening the
upper part of the walls.
In view of our heavy loads and consistent with the beat oon-
etruotion, we find it will be absolutely necessary to extend
our main front wall footing across the entire front of the
building, i. e., from lot line to let line. To equally
distribute the applied loads, it requires a footing 6 feet
in width. This, of course, must be centered on the center
line of the front wall piers and columns that transmit the
loads which necessitates projecting it 2.45 feet beyond the
building line.
To assist you in oonoeiving just what our plans and inten-
tions are, the method we oontemplate employing and the type
of construction, etc., we have prepared a detailed drawing
for your consideration, showing both the present layout and
the proposed new plan. Also a detailed section showing pres-
ent depth and the new depth we plan to lower the present
hoist to, together with the new walls, floor and footings.
Sincerely trustin that this detailed explanation, together
