Miami, Vla.
Gentlemen:
I am attaohing hereto a letter from Ur. o.G.Ourtia,
Superintendent of rarks, asking that he be allowed. to um,
the 20 aore tract owned by the city at MT 36th St. and /th
Ave. for a city iiursery. both the location and the soil
conditions make this a very deairable tract for the Oity'S
use as a nursery, and as the present location seems to be
enttrely inadequate for tuie purpose to keep up with the
enoreasing demand for trees and shrubbery for the City/plant-
ing of streets, parkways and par,:s, I would recommend that
the .eark Department be allowed to use part of this 20 acre
tract for this purpose.
If this meets with your approval, 1 will have part
of this tract cleared up and made ready for this use.

Dear Sir:
As per your request of reoent date. I am sub
witting for your information the following.
1f the city of laiami is to maintain a nursery
for the propagation of plants to be distributed in the
parks and along the streets, it is essential that a
larger area than the present location be given immediate
consideration.

The 20 acre treat at Hoene Vista would prove
an ideal spot for this purpose. An arboretum should be
started where all trees, shrubs, and vines adapted to
this country would be grown in one area. prom this stook
we would be able to procure our seeds and cuttings for
future use. it would also enhance the property and be
a great attraction to our citizens, local as well es
tourist.
kiany of our trees, palms and shrubs require at
lest two yeers or more in the nursery before they are
suitable to set out. At present we are so handi-capped
for room that it has been necessary to plant before the
material is properly matured.
1e are carrying on an extensive planting programme
tnis Daring and by dune our stock will be about depleted
of material large enough to set out. Out stoop: for fall
work will not be sufficient enough to supply the demand
for street work alone.
1 am endeavoring to raise enough material for our
nay eront Bark, and this will take up over one-half of
our present filet house area.
We are raisintplants'Atitn *Virago 664 ;0

Every tree and shrub that the .ark Departm4a2
plants enhances the property and enoreases in IllUe
every year. it has been conservatively estimated that
shade trees along the streets and in the parka thre4gh..'
out our cities have a money valuation of 01040 per
inoh, diameter measurement. This fact alone, not oon.,' ;s
sidering the question from a health and beauty standpoint
Should be oonolueive evidence that a larger municipal
nursery would trove a big aeeet to the city of Miami.
The public are realizing more and more how neoessary,
shade trees are on a residential thoroughfare just as
they demand paved streets, sewers, etc. The Oity is
expanding so rapidly that it is out of the question for
the .ark Department to keep abreast of the development
with the present nureery.
Please give this matter you careful consideration
that we will not "be found wanting".
GGO:aa
Very truly yours,
J.G.Ourtie
