MUM HERALD I M People: bulge on the grass of the Naripul Mali on Saturday while waiting to see the Amy parade. FROM PAGE 2A PARADE Bred downtown, spreading over several city blocks. As time evening wore on and an 8 p.m. curfew ap- proached, tensions rose, with police using chemical irritants in an attempt to disperse some protesters from a complex of federal buildings and offers on horseback charging to- ward group of others and swinging thew batons to break them up. Back in Washington, organics of the Amer ica250 events, for which this is the first big produc- tion, sold a "dedicated VIP experience" to large donors, and red MAGA hats to the president's supporters. It was also Trump's 79th birthday, although he has insisted that the celebration was about the Army, not him. Organizers expected vet- erans of the Korea and Vietnam conflicts to turn out, along with those who fought in Afghanistan and Iraq, two wan that Trump — and many Democrats — have declared were wastes of lives and money. Trump has defended the spending of as much as 545 million — including the cost of repairing Washington's streets from the damage expected from rolling 60-lon tanks along Constitution Avenue — as a small price to pay to stoke national pride and to remind the world of hard U.S. power. He told an interviewer on NBC last month that the price tag was "peanuts compared t0 the value of doing it." "We have the greatest missiles in the world," he continued. "We have the greatest submarines In the world. We have the great- est Army tanks in the world. We have the great- est weapons in the world. And we're going to cele- brate it." To some of Tramp's critics, it was conduct unbecoming a superpow- er. In the first Trump tens, that view was shared by military leaden who dissuaded him from replicating the French show of force. They have since been ousted, re- placed by true believers like Hegseth. Every minute was broadcast on Fox News and other conservative networks and streaming services, while the legacy cable networks kept to their ordinary program- ming. One Fox broadcast- er declared lire parade showed that "America means business," and another argued that the show of force rolling alongside the Mall would provide "succor to our allies" and "strike a little bit of fear and a tittle bit of deterrence" into U.S. enemies. But in the run-up to the parade, Trump's critics argued that such a display could do just the opposite, making the country look as if it were yearning for past glories while ignoring the risks of treating allies as if they ere a burden. Trump's political ad- visers bet that half the country or more would enjoy watching the display of Army history, from the World War 1 tanks to the twin -prop B-25 Mitchells that swept over neigh- borhoods in northwest Washington on thew way to the flyover, as much as Trump's ever -evolving definition of what "Amer- ica First" means to his presidency. Parades are pure showmanship, and Tnunp is a master show - The protests, which organizers deliberately kept outside Washington to avoid focusing more attention on the military celebration, had been planned for many weeks as opposition to the ad- ministration's efforts to dismiss expert opinion, oust the "deep state" and silence critics have mount- ed. Trump's decision to move 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines into Los Angeles asserted a role for the military at home, which was exactly what had given the Continental Congress pause about creating a colonial army at all. That same concern, 250 years later, was ex- pected to give the week- end protests mass and weight. They were further fueled by Trump's speech at Fort Bragg in North Carolina this month, when he lumped peaceful protesters with "trouble- makers, agitators, k- surrectionius" and later said anyone protesting in Washington would be met with "very big force." Hannon City Clerk Ad No. 43742 ay11111E440 I T ,MSEWd4d5 Putin condemns Israel's attack in call with Trump and offers to mediate IVMULaolNNS NY7 Na0ewa Russian President Vladimir Putin had a 50-minute phone call with President Donald Trump on Saturday in which Patin said he was concerned that the con- flict between Israel and Inn could escalate in unpredictable ways, a top Kremlin foreign policy aide said. During the call, Patin condemned tassel's at- tack on Inn and under- scored the need to pre- vent the conflict from expanding, said the aide, Yuri Ushakov. Pa- tin also briefed Trump on conversations he had had with the leaders of Intel and Iran, and the two presidents agreed not to rule out restarting negotiations on the Ira- nian nuclear program, Ushakov said. Trump confirmed in a post on social media that he had spoken with Pa- tin, saying that the two men had "hiked at length" about the con- flict between Israel and Inn but offering no details. "He feels, as do 1, this war in Israel -Iran should end," Trump wrote, "to which I explained, his war should also end." He said the initial pur- pose of the call was for Patin "to very nicely wish me a Happy Birth- day." The call came as Israel and Iran continued to pummel each other with intense airstrikes for a second day. The clash began Friday when Is- rael bombarded ken with dozens of missiles, targeting nuclear sites and wiping out much of the top of the country's military chain of com- mand. Israel justified the attack as necessary to prevent Iran from building a nuclear wea- pon. Tromp has not called for Israel to rein in its assault, and he initially praised the onslaught as "excellent." U.S. offi- cials have said they are moving warships and other military assets in the Middle East to help protect Israel and U.S. troops in the region. But Ushakov said Trump had agreed in the phone call that the dtuation was "very alarming." A round of talk. be- tween Washington and Tehran on the future of Iran's nuclear program had been scheduled to take place in Omen on Sunday, but it was can. celed because of the conflict between Israel and Iran, officials acid Satudey. Trump has urged Inn to resume those talks and make • deal "before there is nothing left." During Saturday's telephone call, Patin also said that Moscow was willing to hold an- other round of direct talks with Ukraine after June 22, as agreed, Ush- akov said. Russia and Ukraine resumed direct talks in Istanbul in May for the first time in three years, at Trump's urging. Patin said an exchange of prisoners, including some who were seriously wounded, as well as the bodies of soldiers killed was taking place, as agreed during the last round of negotiations. FROM PAGE RA STRANDED my God, what'. going on?' because you're all ducombobulated," she mid, describing the mo- ments before she and a friend ran into • bomb shelter to wait out the expected return b.rrage signaled by the siren.. Bendsvid is one of several Miamians caught u the conflict that start- ed Friday after Israel's targeted attack on Ira- nian assets and military chain of command. Paul MUSS, an Aventine city commissioner visiting relatives in Israel, also took cover in a bomb shelter as sirens went off. Friday night saw coun- (et-Ntikes from Iran, with misssdea hitting at lean seven sites near Tel Aviv, and Saturday saw Israeli TIOSSOes flying over Tehran in the morn- ing with • retaliatory stuck by Inn in the evening. The death toll was estimated to be 78 in inn, including four top security chiefs, accord- ing to the country's am- bassador to the United Nations, while three casualties had been con- tinued in Israel et an early stage in the con- flict, es reported by the Assedated Press. The attacks, launched over Israel'. concerns about Iran's growing nude., program, hap. pened days sly of a U.S.- Iran meeting, where both countries had planned to discus. Iran's curbing the program in exchange for the luting of US. sanctions. eendavid, 58, arrived in Israel on May 30, two weeks before the mis- siles sullied flying, for It routine visit to Israeli organizations that her nonprofit funds. On Thursday, the day before the first strike by Israel, she attended a computer coding hackathon for Orthodox Jewish women studying technology. Although the attacks were a stark escalation in a decades -long conflict, Bendavtd oys daily life in Israel is not much different from "prepar- ing for a hurricane" in South Florida. She describes the un- ease and uncertainty about where a storm might melee landfall to where a missile might hit in Modi'in-Maccabim- Re'ut, the central Israel city she's saying in half- way between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Schools and workpla- ces were closed, and n.rionsl evens like the week-long Tel Aviv Pride parade were canceled. Grocery shelves were wiped clean of essentials like milk and eggs as residents stocked their "safe rooms," small- scale dithers set up in homes or apartment complexes. Alerts from the Home Front Command app wake locals from restless sleeps, often giving a three -minute window to enter the nearest "pro- tected space" before the next attack is expected. The sirens, she says, go off "in the middle of the night. The other day itwas at3inthe mom - in& Last night it was at t in the morning. You're not sleeping because of the strut and the anx- iety." For others, safety has proved even harder to some by, eend.vid said. Her 29-yea-old son Ariel, who moved to Tel Aviv • year and a half ago, is One of many Is- raeli residents who live in outdated buildings with no bomb shelters. He sleeps in his clothes because when alarms sound, he has about a minute to bolt actors the street to an underground parking serest. Neighbors of Benda- vid's have woken up to shrapnel in their back- yards and have been urged by locals to not post photos of the debris on social media or share them via messaging apps for fear that the Iranian government will obtain more information on the accuracy of in targeting. Vacationers from South Florida and study - abroad students from schools including the University of Miami and Florida Internet/one! University found them- selves stranded in the highly targeted cities Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Israeli media predic- ted airport shutdown* for the ensuing three to four days, and some U.S. airlines have halted flights through the sum - met. Benadvid isn't sure whether her flight back home, scheduled for Tuesday morning, will Ike off. She said that Israel Is m a state of trauma and shock but that morale remains high.
