City of Miami Resolution R-25-0221 Legislation City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 17605 Final Action Date: 6/17/2025 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION, BY A FOUR -FIFTHS AFFIRMATIVE (4/5THS) VOTE, PURSUANT TO SECTION 54-137 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS AMENDED ("CITY CODE"), WAIVING THE RESTRICTIONS RELATED TO THE CODESIGNATION OF NAMED STREETS CONTAINED THEREIN AND CODESIGNATING "CHARLES TERRACE" BETWEEN JEFFERSON STREET AND SOUTHWEST 37TH AVENUE AS "GERALD TINKER WAY" TO HONOR THE CONTRIBUTIONS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF GERALD ALEXANDER TINKER; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A CERTIFIED COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICIALS; PROVIDING FOR AN IMMEDIATE EFFECTIVE DATE. SPONSOR(S): Commissioner Damian Pardo WHEREAS, Gerald Alexander Tinker ("Tinker"), born January 19, 1951, in Miami, Florida, is a distinguished former track athlete and football player; and WHEREAS, Tinker won a gold medal in the 4 x 100 meters relay at the 1972 Summer Olympics, contributing to the United States' world record -equalling performance; and WHEREAS, Tinker attended Coral Gables Senior High School in Coral Gables, Florida, where he excelled in both football and track, and was part of a historic all -black backfield that led the team to be rated the team of the century by the Florida High School Athletic Association; and WHEREAS, Tinker was a standout athlete at Kent State University, where he won the 1973 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championship in the 60-yard dash and set multiple records in the Mid -American Conference; and WHEREAS, after his Olympic success, Tinker was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the second round of the 1974 NFL Draft and also played for the Green Bay Packers, showcasing his versatility and talent in professional football; and WHEREAS, Ordinance No. 14317, adopted on September 26, 2024, provides that the restrictions related to street codesignations, including the restriction on renaming named streets, contained in Section 54-137 of the Code of the City of Miami, Florida ("City Code"), may be waived by a four -fifths (4/5ths) affirmative vote of the City Commissioners, or an unanimous vote of the quorum that exists because of either abstentions or vacancies resulting from resignation, death, suspension, or physical incapacitation; and WHEREAS, the City Commission finds it is in the best interest of the residents of the City of Miami, Florida, to waive the restrictions contained in Section 54-137 of the City Code and to rename that portion of "Charles Terrace" between Jefferson Street and Southwest 37th City of Miami Page 1 of 2 File ID: 17605 (Revision: A) Printed On: 7/17/2025 17605 Legislation -SUB I THIS DOCUMENT IS A SUBSTITUTION TO ORIGINAL. Enactment Number: R-25-0221 Avenue as "Gerald Tinker Way" to honor Gerald Tinker's significant contributions to sports and his lasting impact on the community; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The Miami City Commission hereby codesignates "Charles Terrace" between Jefferson Street and Southwest 37th Avenue as "Gerald Tinker Way" to honor the contributions and accomplishments of Gerald Alexander Tinker. Section 3 The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, and Solid Waste; the Miami -Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works; the United States Postal Service; and, if a State of Florida road, to the Florida Department of Transportation, District 7, for sign installation within the newly named roadway. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon adoption.
