In behalf of the Union Band of Miami respectfully submit a proposition fort
twine a week band oonoerts at the Park. The Union Band is prepared to furnish said
oonoerts at $50.00 per oonoert for nineteen men, and if the city does not feel able to
bear the full amount the merchants of Miami have subscribed half of the amount br the
Union Band to furnish the mnsio. If the pity oonsiders two oonoerts too much the same
terms apply to one oonoert a week.
Hoping this meet& with your approval, I am,

Councilman Romfh stated that he !sword the band oonoerts ant but that they eight prove
annoying to the residents on that part of lSth Street and didn't think it necessary to
spend $100 of the oity's money for the deoorations.
Counoilman Ralston stated that if some form of amusement.was not furnished the young
people during the evening there was a likelihood of their getting into trouble; that a groat
many oommunities have adopted the municipal dance hall; that it was not necessary to keep
the decorations in order to have danoing in 12th Street on osrtai n nights during the week
but that to have.ons or two nights weekly for public danoing was a aphndid idea for
the entertainment of the young people of Miami as well as the tourists.
1 Mr. Terris stated the city shoo a do something for the amusement of the people and that !
the decorations would prove very attractive in connection with the bond oonoerts one or too
nights weekly, and that a subsoription list v.is now being circulated among the merchants]
to pay the band for playing one night weekly.
Mr. Dodson stated that the band was entirely willing to give the oonoerts at any point
the oity might select and to furnish any kind of music desired and suggested that it
might be well to play for km one hour for dancing and the second hour to oonoert musio;
that subscriptions had been signed up for one half the expense, some signing with the
distinot understanding that there would be dancing and others with the understanding
that there should be no danoing.
Councilman Romfh stated that he favord oonoerts but suggested that a committee be appointed
to oonfer with the Board of Trade, Commercial Club and the Merchants and others and
see whether the people favor danoing or oonoert musio; that he was willing to withdraw
his motion and let the matter go over but would not change his opinion that it is not
necessary for the oity to purohase the deoorations.
N Councilman Ralston stated that he did not think there would be any objections from the
residents along that part of lath Street if the music stopped at a reasonable hour; that
lath Street is a business street and people who lived thereon should make no,protest.
Counoilman Hefty favored the oonoerts but did not think the oommeroial olub or the
merchants should be called upon to bear any part of the expense as the musio would be
for the benefit of everyone and the oity should stand the exonse.
C unoilman Romfh stated that he agreed with Mr. Hefty that the oity should stand the
expense and his suggestion that a oommittee consult with the oivio bodies was merely for
the purpose to find out whether dancing or oonoert musio is wanted and:to get their
opinion about keeping the deoorations in place.
moved by T. C. Romfh, seoonded by O. Y. Tiler, that a oommittee of three be appointed
to oonfer with the merchants, Board of Trade and Commercial Club and get their views
on the batter of band oonoerts, the kind of music to be furnished and whether the
decorations should be purohased. Motion oarried.
