Members present: F.G.Erfert, _ , J.A.McDonald, F.F.Holmes, E.C.Romfh, R.6.
Watson and C.Refty.
The Mayor spoke about the Bond issue and said that he thought it premature
to employ an expert before the bolds were sold, andhe brought to the attention of the
council, the price charged by Mr. Hazelhurat, and thought that equally as good ser-
vice could be procured at a less expense to the !ity and read several letters from
engineers quoting the prices charged. One from McCorke and Baylis quoting a price of
o ,e per cent for amount of money expended. The mayor dwelt on the importance of
council not being too hasty and said that hebelieved an expert could be employed
and that he did not have anything against Mr. Hazelhurst, but he thought for the Cties
interest, that co until should save every oent possible.
City Engineer Frederick said that he understood that J.N.Hazelhurst was going
to take the sewer and paving , and that if such was the case,he could take charge of
everything as it seemed he was not wanr,ed any more. There was quite a diacuseion
between the Mayor and Council on the amount of fees asked by the different engineers.
Councilman 'McDonald explained to the engin eer that he knew it was not the in-
tention of council to take the position from him but that '.4r.Iiazelhurst was only to
be employed to do the expert engineering and that if he was in his pltice,he would be
glad of it,as he was a young man and could get some valuable information from Mr.
Hazelhurst.
Mr. Hazelhurst explained the manner in which he would have the work done, showing
how many men he would have to employ, stating that he would have a man at the work
where the material was being made,a chemical engineer, and also one or two practical
engineers on the job all the time looking after the c lnstruction, and that all con-
sulting engineers had a kind of a fixed charge, whic:h was the same as he had asked
the city.
After discussing the matter for some time, councilman Romfh made a,.otion that the
city go into a contract with J.N.Hazelhurst as consulting engineer, but at this time
the attorney' notified couhcil that according to the new charter, the Mayor would have
to sign the contract, and Council Romfh withdrew his motion.
It was later oecided that 0.N.Hazelhurst should sign the contract presented by
the city attorney, and leave it with the clerk to be signed by the proper city
officials later if it es decided best to do so.
Moved by E.C.Romfh and seconded by o.A.McDonald that council adjourn. '.lotion
