of Camp Century, a short-
lived experiment in making
the Cold War literal. In
1959, the US. Army began
building a network of tun-

that it hoped might be-

By 1967, the military had

Camp Century are still
providing insights into the
planet's history.
When Paul Bierman, a
gmlogest at the University
of Vermont, began study-
ing some of these samples,
he made a surprising dis-
covery. Scientists had once
believed that Greenland's
ice sheet had been largely
stable for the last 2.6 mil-
lion years. But what Bier-
nd his colleagues
saw under the microscope
provided clear evidence
that pans of the ice sheet
had temporarily melted
away far more recently.
Roughly 400,000 years
ago, the site had been free
of ice.
Bierman spoke to The
New York Times about this
discovery, which he chron-
icles in his new book,
"When the Ice Is Gone."

administrators: In 2020, it
was sold by disgraced
nursing -home mogul Phil-
lip Esformes, who was
convicted a year earlier in
what was called the "larg-
est healthcare fraud
scheme ever charged by
the Justice Department."
He was ordered to serve
20 years in a federal pri-
son, but that sentence was
commuted by then -Presi-
dent Donald Trump short-
ly before he left office.
The new owner also has
been enveloped in scan-
daL Bent Philipson, a con-
troversial healthcare in-
vestor, bought the facility
for almost 624 million,
cording to Miami -Dade
property records. He also
purchased at least two
other assisted -living facil-
ities from the Esformes
family, For Haven and
Harmony Health, The
Real Deal previously
reported.
Philipson and his son
have had ownership stakes
in dozens of nursing
homes across the country.
In December of 2022,
New York Attorney Gener-
al Leticia James charged
the pair and 10 others with
diverting 522.6 million in
Medicaid and Medicare
funds meant for patient
care at a nursing home
that they owned in Wood-
bury, New York In March
of this year, a Nassau
County Supreme Court
judge ordered Philipson to
be removed as an owner.
Though Florida's health-
care agency, often called
AHCA, has documented a
litany of violations at
Noh Dade during the
past five years, elders and
thew family members
considering the home
might have real trouble
understanding the cita-
tions. AHCA uses redac-
tion software that often
makes h impossible to
comprehend the docu-
ments, in which virtually
all dates, diagnoses, body
parts and other words are
blacked out — even though
the agency already pro-
tects the identities of resi-
dents.
One family told the
Miami Herald their short-
lived experience with the
home was frustrating and
disappointing. Claudia
Carvajal's 76-year-old
mother, Maria, had been
in the end stages of colon
cancer when family mem-
bers decided to move her
to the North center in late
THE 'MOST
DEPRESSING' PLACE
She told the Herald her
mother needed 24-hour
care and the family had to
accept that she needed the
kind of attention that only
nursing home could give.
After a couple of days,
Carvajal and her sister
visited their mother at the
home.
"Tndy that place is the
most depressing you can
imagine," Carvajal said in
Spanish. "The smell was
honible. The place was
duty. The people who
worked there lacked hu-
manity."
Carvajal's mother only
lived at the facility for
about a week before she
fell, prompting staff to call
911. Carvajal said the staff
was so disorganized that
no one could ever tell her
how her mother fell or
what exactly led up to the
911 call. It took about a
month to get her mother's
belongings back.
'Those people [staff]
didn't care about any-
body," she said. "They
couldn't tell us anything."
Carvajal's mom was
taken to Jackson Memorial
Hospital, and, when she
recovered, Carvajal plead-
ed with a social worker to
place her mother in a
different home, she said.
She ended up elsewhere,
and Carvajal said the new
facility made a world of
difference.
Carvajal said she wasn't
very surprised when she
learned that a man's re-
mains had been fond
inside a closet. "1t did
make me very sad know-
ing my mother was there
and it very easily could've
been her when she lived
there," she said.
Administrators at the
nursing home, at 1255 NE
135th Street in North Mia-
mi, did not reply to a re-
quest for an interview by
the Herald. The Agency
for Health Care Adminis-
tration did not respond to
an email from a Herald
reporter.
On Sept. 2, the body of
71-year-old Elin Etienne
was fond decomposing in
a storage closet. Etienne,
who suffered from de-
mentia, had been reported
missing on Aug. 22. Ruth
Etienne, the man's grand-
daughter, told the Herald
he had suffered an aneu-
rysm.
North Miami police on
Monday said the Miami
Dade County Medical
Examiner's Office had
confirmed his identity.
The cause of death has not
been determined, and
police continue to investi-
gate the circumstances
surrounding Etiene's
death, said department
spokesman Maj. Kessler
Brooks.
When AHCA investiga-
tors visited the facility for
an nannounced inspec-
tion last month, they wrote
that staff "failed to pro-
mote and ensure [that]

residents are treated in a
dignified manner and
treated with respect."
Inspectors wrote that
when they observed break-
fast that day, they saw
staff members standing up
while feeding residents
who can't feed them-
selves- Residents who
were too disabled to eat on
their own were referred to
as "feeders," the report
said. Some of those resi-
dents had to wait a half-
hour and watch as their
non -disabled peers fin-
ished their meals before
they could eat their own,
"At the time of the
meals all the [nursing
assistants] have been as-
signed their section and
they assist all the feeders
that they have in their
section. If there are not
enough staff, they have to
wait a few minutes,'" the
report quotes one nurse as
saying.
"Sometimes it takes a
while for the staff to come;
1 assume it's because they
are busy. When they serve
the food sometimes some
residents had to wait a
little longer than usual
ones because the staff are
busy or there are not
enough," said one resident
to the AHCA inspector.
The resident had been
living at the facility for
more than a year.
NAKED RESIDENT
The inspectors also
witnessed one resident
who was not wearing
pants and was exposing
himself while other resi-
dents were eating. "1 need
some clothes," the man,
identified as Resident 48,
said, when questioned by
inspectors. When a nurse
called for help to dress the
man, "no one responded,"
the report said.
Ittook a while for staff
to get him clothed, the
repo said. Inspectors
watched as another resi-
dent propelled himself
around on his wheelchair
with his feet, which had no
socks or shoes, they wrote.
Reacting to the staffs
treatment of residents, the
home's nursing director
told inspectors: "We need
to do an in-service [train-
ing] on dignity."
The inspection, which
was completed Aug. I,
faulted the home for fall-
ing to offer residents an
appropriate diet- One
woman, identified as Resi-
dent 186, called the food
"lousy."

and cheese sandwich on
Sundays- Who wants to eat
a ham and cheese sand-
wich on a Sunday?," the
woman said to an inspec-
tor.
As it rums out, Resident
186 was on a Ibnited fat
diet- A review of the
home's menu confirmed
the resident's complaint.
Three weeks in a row,
residents were given a
"hot roast beef sandwich
[or[ hamburger" with
french fries or a baked
potato and either buttered
carrots or chilled beets for
bosh Inch and dinner on
Sunday.
The home's dietary
manager also confirmed
residents weren't happy
abut the menu: "She
stated 'the residents were
complaining about the
same food being repeated
... and there were no
changes'." The dietitian
told inspectors she had
asked a food company to
vary the food choices, but,
the report says, "changes
were not made to the
menu-"
The report also cited the
lack of cleanliness in the
kitchen. A microwave
oven that was used to
warm food for residents
was fond to be "not
clean" and had "brown,
dried substances and con-
tained brown -like rust
stains,"
At the August inspec-
tion, monitors also noted
issues with a resident's
care planaccess to
dental care for another
resident, improper drug
storage and safety haz-
ards.
In the August repo, the
home was cited for failing
to provide proper care for
residents. Among the
missteps mentioned in the
report: One woman, Resi-
dent 186, was fond sitting
in bed watching television
without what appeared to
have been her dentures.
When asked where they
were, the woman said, "1
have not seen the dentist
since 1 have been here.)
want to see the dentist"
The nursing -home records
confirmed she had never
seen a dentist
A year earlier, AHCA
inspectors faulted the
home for several addition-
al lapses, including the
presence of "strong odors"
and an unclean, disre-
paired and unkempt ap-
pearance throughout the
facility.
State inspectors were so
concerned by what they
taw that day that they
designated 211209 resi-
dents at "immediate jeop-
ardy" of "life threatening"
harm- Details of what
inspectors saw are redact-
ed in the report, except
that some kind of "mon-
itoring equipment" was
being shared by "multiple
residents" — leaving them
at risk of "contamination."
On the day of the in-
spection, March 23, 2023,
the report said, the floor of
Resident 146's room "was
noted to be covered in"
something that the state
redacted and in need of
housecleaning- Whatever
was on the floor, it smell-
ed bad, though the home's
housekeeping director
insisted to inspectors
"there is nothing they coo
do."
That same day, inspec-
tors reported seeing "a
long line and a crack in the
ceiling with a brown, nut-
like water spa in the ceil-
ing" in Resident 91's
The toilet in Resident
51's room was in "dis-
repair," with loud, running
water. The maintenance
director promised to
"work on it and fir it"
The previous year, in
October 2022, inspectors
faulted the home for fail-
ing to 'timely report sus-
pected abuse, neglect or
theft and report the results
of the investigation to
proper authorities."

Deep inside a glacier in
Greenland are the remains
of Camp Century, a short.
lived experiment in making
the Coll War literal. In
1959, the U.S. Army began
building a network of tun-
nels, carved inside the ice,
that it hoped might be.
come a launch site for
nuclear missiles.
By 1967, the military had
abandoned the idea and
the lase. But the samples
frozen army base, he found incredible fossils
of ice and frozen sediment
that scientists extracted
from deep underneath
Camp Century are still
providing insights into the
planet's history.
When Paul Bierman, a
geologist at the University
of Vermont, began study-
ing some of these samples,
he made a surprising dis-
covery. Scientists had once
believed that Greenland's
ice sheet had been largely
stable for the last 2.6 mil-
lion years. But what Bier-
man his colleagues
saw under the microscope
provided clear evidence
that parts of the ice sheet
had temporarily melted
away far more recently.
Roughly 400,000 yearn
ago, the site had been free
of lee.
Bierman spoke to The
New York Times about this
discovery, which he clvon-
icles in his new book,
"When the Ice Is Gone."
Q: In your book, you say
that these samples led to
the only real eureka mo-
ment of your scientlfi
career. A: The samples showed
upon this really steamy
July afternoon in a DHL
box with a lot of freezer
packs. We got this incred-
ible whiff of diesel fuel,
because in the 1960s they
used a mix of diesel fuel
and trichloroethylene —
that's dry-cleaning fluid —
to keep the hole in the ice
open while they were drill-
ing.
We were sieving these
ample, which involved
trying to sort them by the
re of the grain. So we
take out the cobbles and

As weather conditions improve, firefighters make
progress battling Southern California wildfires

LOS ANGELES
Amid a record -breaking
heat wave, f fighters m
Southern California have
struggled over the last
week to contain three large
wildfires that have
scorched more than
100,000 acres.
The arson -sparked Line
fire has chewed through
38,000 acres in the San
Bernardino Mountains
between Highland and Big
Bear lake, prompting the
vacuadon of several
mountain communities.
The Bridge fire consumed
nearly 53,000 acres in the
San Gabriel Mountains in
Los Angeles and San Ber-
nardino comties, destroy-
ing more than a doom
structures. And the Airport
fire swept through 23,000
acres in Orange and River-
side counties.
The three blazes are sell
largely uncontrolled, but an
incoming cold front and
cloudy weather this week-
end are expected to offer
me reprieve, officials said
Saturday. Much of South-
ern California saw temper-
atures ranging from the
high 60s to mid-70s
throughout the day.
Many pares of the region
are expected to see a dou-
ble-digit drop in temper-
atures, extensive cloud
cover and a chance for light
rain over the next few days,

Brings, downtown Los
Angeles is forecast to see
high temperatures in the
low 70s, a nearly 40-de-
gree drop from its high of
112 degrees on Sept. 6.
There is even a slight
chance for light rain
Wednesday and Thursday.
These milder conditions
- along with increased
humidity - are also expect-
ed to extend farther inland
ne
ar the wildfires.
"As we've seen the last
few days, there's been a
pretty goad cooling trend
from the excessive heat
wave that we saw persist
for almost a week," Nation-
al Weather Service meteo-
rologist Bryan Lewis said
"This provides some really
nice relief, especially after
these fires have been going
out of control."

Democrats ask
Justice to review
DeSantis' abortion
petition probe
BY oGEN

TALIANAMEE
Neatly all of Florida's
congressional Democrats
have sent a letter asking the
US. Department of Justice
to investigate Gov. Non
DeSantis' administration
over its decision to review
thousands of already ver-
ified, abortion -amendment
petitions.
In the letter, the Demo-
crats said they are "fully
supportive of robust, trans-
parent investigations into
instances of signature
fraud," but said "the De -
Santis administration's
tardy, opaque, unusual, and
redundant investigation
does not appear to be of this
nature."
Florida's secretary of
state certified Amendment
4 for November ballots in
late January after the group
sponsoring the amendment
got nearly 1 million vali-
dated petitions in support.
The amendment, which
DeSantis opposes, would
protect abortion access in
the state until viability,
generally considered to be
about 24 weeks of preg-
nancy.
In the past few weeks, the
Florida Department of State
has contacted at least six
county elections offices
asking them to pull about
37,000 verified signatures
for review for potential
fraud.
One county supervisor
told the Tampa Bay Times
the requests were unprece-
dented. The slate's request
focused on versed signa-
tures, not rejected petitions,
which have been the basis
for past fraud cases.
The letter from the con-
gressional Democrats also
asks the federal agency to
look into an anti -Amend-
ment 4 website posted last
week by the Florida Agency
for Health Care Adminis-
tration. The website claims
the amendment "threatens
women's safety."
DeSantis has defended
the website, saying it and a
related advertisement were
a "public-service announce-
ment" and that all the in -

Democrats have also asked the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate Florida Gov.
Ron DeSanlii administration for creating a websne that opposes the proposed Florida
abortion amendment, which would protect abortion access in the state until viability.
formation was accurate.
(The Florida Supreme Court
this week fast -tracked a
case That was fled against
DeSantis and others and
alleges the stare website
violates laws that prohibit
state offers from using
their official power to in-
terfere with elections)
The Democrats in the
letter, say the governor's
intent with the website and
the petition review is to
Intimidate people out of
voting for Amendment 4.
"Floridians, including the
hundreds of thousands who
contributed a signature in
the hopes that they could
vote to restore women's
right to bodily autonomy,
deserve the freedom to cast
a ballot in November un-
tainted by illegal political
ploys," the letter says
Seven of Florida's eight
congressional Democrats
signed the knee, including
Debbie Wasserman Schultz
of Weston. Rep. Jared Mos-
kowitz, who represents
parts of Broward and Palm
Beach counties, is the only
Florida US. House member
who didn't sign.
When asked for com-
ments, DeSantis' office
nefened to social -media
posts from governor's office
employees One post was
from mnior management
analyst Christina Pushaw,
who said "Florida has the
DITTY to ensure election
integrity and security. No
nt of fraud should be
tolerated, and any fraudu-
lent / forged signatures -
probable cause to investi-
gate further."
The Department of Jus-
tice declined to comment
on Thursday.
