Insight from Barbara. Stein on performance group funding
By ABRAHAM GALVAN
Serving the performing arts
community for 35 years, Actors'
Playhouse at Miracle Theatre has
stood thetestthetime and continues
to offer its platform for artists and
productions to build prominence.
Performing groups and institu-
tions that are starting out need to
figure out how to get the support,
create relationships and prove that
they can do the job through due dili-
gence, said Barbara Stein, executive
producing director and co-founder
of the Actors' Playhouse at 280
Miracle Mile in Coral Gables.
"And that's hard to do in the very
beginning because you're start-
ing out and sometimes groups are
formed by artists, who don't have
any background or community re-
lationships," she said. "Our benefit
was the fact that we've always been
personally serving the community
in one way or another."
The main focus is to build a
succession plan for the theatre and
endowment, Ms. Stein said. "I'm
not thinking of today, I'm thinking
of tomorrow."
While working together and
planning for over a year and a half
during the pandemic to finally get
"On Your Feet" Broadway produc-
tion on the stage, Ms. Stein said, she
saw remarkable leadership skills
in Natalie Canmcho, who took on
more priority responsibilities and
Natalie Caruncho seeks to direct
became a real asset to the "On Your
Feet" show
Ms. Caruncho served as associ-
ate director and choreographer in
the Actors' Playhouse critically
acclaimed production, which told
the true story about intemational
sensations and Miami's own Gloria
and Emilio Estefan. She was also
part of the original 2015 Broadway
company of"On Your Feet," work-
ing as its associate choreographer to
set the international tour.
"I was very impressed with her
professionalism, her critical think-
ing skills on casting the show, but
more importantly on how she held
onto the dream fora year and a half
as we were developing it," Ms. Stein
said "I would tell her to continue
her skill in directing and continue
to broaden her scope of working in
regional theaters because she has

a promising career and is really
renowned right now."
For Ms. Caruncho, it was about
connecting back to her culture
in terms of dancing, the music,
the story and just being based in
Miami. "On Your Feet" Broadway
production debuted at the play-
house Feb. 9 and was extended
through March 13 due to great
demand.
"1 did the tour in London, and
I've had opportunities to tell the
story of the Estefans, but to do it
again in Miami after two years of
not doing theater was a real celebra-
tion," she said. "Actors' Playhouse
was such a beautiful place to do it,
right in the middle of Coral Gables
and having the history that it does
and the support from everybody in
the building."
Stepping more into directorial
roles is what's next in her artistic
career, Ms. Caruncho said "Es-
pecially after these two years, you
have all this time to reflect, and it's
something that 1 feel really passion-
ate about, which is telling stories,
holding space, and creating art."
"I would love to come back home
and continue my exploration, my
curiosity about the kind of director
I can be and finding a home for that
at the Actors' Playhouse would be
particularly something 1 would be
reallyexcitedabout,"Ms. Caruncho
added. "I would love to figure out
my voice."
