More than 10,000 underprivileged kids start school in style
BY ABRAHAM GALVAN
More than 10,000 under -
served Miami -Dade County
Public Schools students started
the school year with new uniforms
and school essentials, thanks to the
efforts of nonprofit Style Saves.
Coming back for its tenth an-
nual "Back -To -School" event
Aug. 14 and 15 at the Miami
Beach Convention Center, Style
Saves, in partnership with Pepsi,
distributed school uniforms,
sneakers, backpacks, and supplies
to families and other organiza-
tions that care for underprivileged
children throughout the county.
Using the convention center as
a fulfillment center, Style Saves
ensured that all registered stu-
dents receive their uniforms and
back -to -school essentials. Once
packed, the kits were shipped out
to other larger organizations and
shelters where families can go
and pick them up, said Rachael
Russel Saiger, the nonprofit's
founder and president.
"Back -to -school time is an
annual childhood rite of passage
Wald Red Eye Photo
Convention center hub distributed uniforms, sneaker, backpacksand supplies to families, organizations
but for some underprivileged
kids, it can be a reminder of their
struggle," she added. "That's why
we launched Style Saves, uniting
philanthropy and fashion to help
ensure all children in Miami -Dade
County can have a positive expe-
rience this time of year."
Founded in 2011, Style Saves
began with the idea to unite fash-
ion with philanthropy. Combin-
ing a diverse community with a
shared love for humanitarianism.
The mission is to give students
the self-confidence and assur-
ance they need to succeed both
academically and personally, Ms.
Russel Saiger said. Next up for
the charity organization is a free
holiday outdoor event with food
trucks, music and over 1,000 of
toys to give away. During prom
and graduation seasons, Style
Saves holds events where high
school students get a chance to
go on free prom dress and tuxedo
shopping sprees.
Style Saves works with well-
known organizations that focus
on the well-being of children and
students including Big Brothers
Big Sisters of Greater Miami,
Miami Children's Hospital Foun-
dation, MAM's Girl Power, Tracy
Mounting's Honey Shine Mentor-
ing Program, Hope for Miami,
Educate Tomorrow, Pridelines
Youth Services and Voice For
Children.
"We are beyond thankful to our
community partners who help us
make a difference in these chil-
dren's lives every year and give
them the confidence they need to
excel and put their best foot for-
ward as the school year begins,"
said Style Saves Vice President
and Board Member Isabela Ran -
gel Grutfnan ofthe back -to -school
event. "Despite the rising cases
in Florida, we wanted to ensure
these students didn't miss out on
this opportunity."
