A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION, BY A FOUR -FIFTHS
AFFIRMATIVE (4/5THS) VOTE, PURSUANT TO SECTION 54-137 OF THE
CODE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS AMENDED ("CITY CODE"),
WAIVING THE RESTRICTIONS RELATED TO STREET RENAMING
CONTAINED THEREIN, CODESIGNATING SOUTHWEST 9TH AVENUE FROM
SOUTHWEST 12TH AVENUE TO SOUTHWEST 26 ROAD AS "FR. JUAN M.
LOPEZ WAY" IN HONOR OF FATHER JUAN M. LOPEZ'S CONTRIBUTIONS
TO THE CITY OF MIAMI, THE SAINTS PETER AND PAUL CATHOLIC PARISH
COMMUNITY, AND THE ARCHDIOCESE OF MIAMI; FURTHER DIRECTING
THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE
HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICIALS.

WHEREAS, Father Juan M. Lopez ("Father Lopez") was the Pastor of Saints Peter and
Paul Catholic Parish located at 900 Southwest 26th Road, Miami, Florida in the "Roads"
community, where he began as an administrator in 1988 and then Pastor until his retirement in
2022; and
WHEREAS, Father Lopez was born in Medina de Pomar, Burgos, Spain, and studied at
the Seminario Metropolitano in Burgos for ten (10) years and at the Colegio Teologico Hispano
Americano for two (2) more years before being ordained on June 24, 1962, for the Archdiocese
of Burgos, Spain; and
WHEREAS, Father Lopez arrived in South Florida in September, 1964 and served as
parochial vicar at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Parish, Miami Shores (1964-66 and 1970-71), St.
Michael the Archangel Catholic Parish, Miami (1966-67), St. Mary Cathedral Catholic Parish,
Miami (1967-69), St. Brendan Catholic Parish, Miami (1969-70), and Immaculate Conception
Catholic Parish, Hialeah (1971-73); and
WHEREAS, in June 1973, Father Lopez was named administrator of St. Ann Catholic
Mission in Naranja, where he served until June 1983, when he was named administrator of St.
Raymond Catholic Parish in Miami; and
WHEREAS, in April 1988, Father Lopez was named to his post as administrator and
then pastor of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Parish, Miami; and
WHEREAS, Father Lopez was a Priest of service and compassion, tending to his parish
community as if all were his family, always available in times of crisis and tribulation; and
WHEREAS, Father Lopez was dedicated to providing solace through prayer and support
for families dealing with tragedy, and during his tenure at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Parish,
he annually organized a parish festival to bring the children and community together for fun and
food; and

WHEREAS, Father Lopez was a true Servant of God, devoted to pleasing Him, zealous
for the gospel, and committed to bringing the Word of God to his parish community, both in word
and action; and
WHEREAS, after sixty (60) years as a priest, including thirty-four (34) years at Saints
Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Father Lopez retired in 2022 and returned to his ancestral
homeland and family in Spain; and
WHEREAS, Ordinance No. 14317, adopted on September 26, 2024, provides that the
restrictions related to street co -designations, including the restriction on renaming named
streets, contained in Section 54-137 of the Code of the City of Miami, Florida ("City Code"),
may be waived by a four -fifths (4/5ths) affirmative vote of the City Commissioners, or an
unanimous vote of the quorum that exists because of either abstentions or vacancies
resulting from resignation, death, suspension, or physical incapacitation;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. By a four -fifths (4/5ths) affirmative vote of the City Commissioners, or an
unanimous vote of the quorum that exists because of either abstentions or vacancies resulting
from resignation, death, suspension, or physical incapacitation, the restrictions contained in
Section 54-137 of the Code of the City of Miami, Florida ("City Code") related to street co -
designations, including the restriction on codesignating numbered streets with the names of
living individuals, are waived.
Section 3. The Miami City Commission hereby codesignates Southwest 9th Avenue from
Southwest 12th Avenue to Southwest 26 Road as "Fr. Juan M. Lopez Way" in honor of his
dedicated service and lasting impact on the community.
Section 4. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the
Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, and Solid Waste; the Miami -Dade County Department of
Transportation and Public Works; the Miami -Dade County Commissioner of District 5; the
United States Postal Service; and, if a State of Florida road, to the Florida Department of
Transportation, District Six, for sign installation within the newly designated roadway.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
