When you're the richest person on the planet, you just don't just lay your head any old place. We're of course talking about Elon Musk, who, as of Thursday afternoon, was worth a staggering $405 billion, according to Forbes' real time ticker. While there are rumors floating around that the South African -American mega mogul is eyeing a penthouse pad in West Palm Beach, his home away aEa r from home these days Elon Musk is appar- ently Mar- a-Lago. The New York Times reports the Space X/Tesla founder rents out a luxury suite at Donald Tnunp's member's-only property. Makes sense. Musk has been logging a lot of time at there as unofficial "First Buddy" and in- coming co-head of of the Department of Govern- ment Efficiency, aka DOGE. Tr unp's largest cam- paign donor has been crashing at the 62,500- square-foot, 17-acre South Florida estate almost full time since right around Election Day, the outlet adds. He sleeps at the Banyan Cottage, which cams upward of 62,000 a night. The cottage is near the residential part of the compound where Trump camps out while at his so called winter White House. It's also within walking distance to such club "privileges" as a swimming pool, spa, five clay tennis courts, croquet court and beach club with restaurant. Though we found no pictures of Musk's tempo- rary crib on the resort's website, all the suites are described as having "or- nately carved and hand - painted Moorish ceilings, spectacular ocean views from balconies and veran- das with antique Spanish - tiled mosaics." Musk's suite is said to also said to be outfitted with multiple appliances, but apparently he doesn't do much cooking. As per the Times, the father of 11 — who just attended Trump's New Year's Eve party at Mar-a-lago's Grand Ballroom with his 4 year old son X — often makes meal requests out- side of the kitchen staffs working hours. As for Musk's other home? After selling off most of his teal estate portfolio during the pan- demic, the 53-year-old revealed in the summer of 2021 that he was living in a tiny prefab house in Boca Chica, Texas, near Space% headquarters. "Ito kinda awesome," he wane in a post on his platform, formerly known as Twitter. We have re- ferred a case to our In- vestigative Section for review based upon the complaints we've re- eived." FDACS has yet to act against Thompson, but Miami -Dade online court records say the state agen- cy's general counsel office requested certified copies of the Miami -Dade case's final judgment; the perma- nent injunction against Thompson, 'Thompson Nation Holdings and Small Move Movers that says, in short, any repeat of the fraudulent behavior will be considered con- tempt of court; and the deposition of Nicollette Gonzalez. So now rail completion is estimated for 2037, a year later than Nilia Cartaya of the Florida Department of Transportation had told the trust in May, an update shows. Her May presentation had put the capital cost of the lO-mile elevated Metmrail extension with eight sta- tions and seven park -and -ride sites at $1.9 billion. By December the cost was up to $2.2 billion and is destined to rise: "We'll come back to this body with an updated figure in the next few months," she said. The tout oversees county trans- portation sales tax receipts, which together with the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and the state are to fund the tail line. Steps to build the North Corridor were frozen after the county in 2022 pulled the plug on a call for public - private rail partners. That detour to private developers and then back again had left state studies dormant from May 2020 to November 2022. "We are taking a fresh look at all of these items as we are moving forward," including planned use of Meaorail itself on the condor and "the ideal locations for the transit stations," Ms. Cartaya told the trust last month. But one station's location drew trust fire for a shift from a once - promised college campus site to the center of Northwest 27th Avenue. "Ourstation in2019was [planned] oncollege property,'"saidtrustmem- ber Harry Hoffman. "So how are students going to get to the campus?" "We would of course look at pedestrian connections at the street level and of course we would" work to encourage the nation's most -attended public college system "to implement a shuttle service to provide that," Ms. Cartaya replied. Mr. Hoffrnan, anewtrustmember who had been dean of academic af- fairs at the college's North Campus and later president of the Home- stead Campus, recalled that many issues Ms. Cartaya was relating to the tout had been discussed and decided before the state was asked to terminate planning for the route in November 2022, and now work has begun again. The public, he said, had been told that all decisions were made "except, guess what, we don't have the money. So I'm skeptical of what you're showing here is ever going to come out to reality because we've gone through this once and now we're going through it a second time." Causeway express buses coming Miami -Dade officials areevaluat- ingschedulingandserviceofexpmss buses on the inside shoulder lanes of the Julia Tuttle Causeway from the Golden Glades Multimodal Termi- nal linking the Earlington Heights Metrorail Station and the Miami Beach Convention Center. Construction of the inside shoul- der lanes for buses began in May 2023 and was being wrapped up at the end of 2024, Gabriela Serrado, chief of infrastructure planning for the Department of Transportation and Public Works, told the Citizens' Independent Transportation Trust "We are trying to implement a direct system, a traditional bus route system during peak hours" during the next rollout of changes in the county's Better Bus Network, she told the trust in December. Those changes are made in waves sched- uled several times a year. Mount Sinai Medical Center on Miami Beach is to be serviced by buses in this corridor as well, the 36 and 150 express, she said. The new route would be the third one using the shoulder of the causeway over Biscayne Bay. The Florida Department of Transportation has finished the con- struction, she said, and the county is waiting for the green light from the state to begin regular service. Harry Hoffman "This is where the taxpayer re- ally gets hit for this project," Mr. Hoffman said. "The college will have a shuttle to bring them to the campus? I don't understand that. It doesn't make any sense to me at all." After crafting a plan that everyone accepted but was short of funding, "now we're going to do this thing all over again." Mr. Hoffman, who represents county commission district 11, served by Commissioner Roberto Gonzalez, pointed to the probable impact of what he was hearing on elected officials. "There are elected officials in that area that need to be made aware of that we've already gone down the road on this and now we're going down a second time, and if they're elected by the people that live in that area, they ought to know that they are wasting the taxpayers' money going down this the second time," he said "The fast time they were ready to go, they had everything done " "We will be going out to the community, so we'll definitely —," Ms. Cartaya started to reply before Mr. Hoffman cut her off to say "Oh, you'd better make sure you have a strong drink before you do that, be- cause you will have people coming out of the woodwork to say, What is this? Why are you changing? What happened?" Ms. Cartaya said she expects the state to seek stakeholder and public comments on the plans late this year. "Good luck," said Mr. Hoffman. "Every time something gets scrapped for one reason or another it's like a brand-new project," trust Chairman Robert Wolfarth said, "and all those [planning, design & engineering] studies, all those con- sultants. You're right, the taxpayers are paying for it" "1 have a selfish reason" for questioning North Condor plans, said Mr. Hoffman. "I want to see that ... people can take the train to North Campus. There's quite a few students that live in the area. And I can assure you that they have no idea that the train station that was going to be on the [campus], that was going to be multi -retail and have a gym and so forth, ain't any more. Now you're going to be in the middle of 27thAvenue, and you've got to cross over to get onto the campus...." "And by the way," he continued, "does your go up to the football stadium, your plan?" "Yes, we do,"Ms. Cartaya replied "And your station's going to be in the middle of 27th Avenue?" he asked "So for the stadium," she said, "we're working through that and we're nArst likely going to have the station on stadium property, but "So how come they can have the station on the stadium property there,"Mr. Hoffmanasked,"but they can't on the college?" "So, again," she replied, "all of this will be fleshed out and we'll definitely be going out to our stake- holders and our community and gathering feedback." "There's still an opportunity for the public to weigh in," said Mr. Wolfarth, who added, "I don't un- derstand the reason." FROM PAGE 1A BRYANT flyers, referring to the Met- ro Commission, now the County Commission. "Yes, Anita! I want to help you bring America back to God and morality," read a fundraising card. Opposition campaign buttons read, "Anita Bryant Sucks Oranges." "Asa mother, I know that homosexuals canna biologically reproduce children; therefore, they must recruit our children," Bryant said during her campaign. "U gays are granted rights, next well have to give rights to prosti- tutes and to people who sleep with St. Bemards and nail biters." The poplar singer and Florida citrus industry pitchwoman's speeches centered on what she per- ceived as imperilment of Christian values. She called homosexuality an "abom- ination" and feared that if gay teachers were hired at her children's Christian school, they would influ- ence students to become gay. "What these people really want, hidden behind obscure legal phrases, is the legal right to propose to our children that theirs is an acceptable alternate way of life," she said "l will lead such a crusade to stop it as this country has not seen before. With God's cotton. ued help, we will prevail in our fight to repeal similar laws throughout the na- DADE COUNTY PASSES GAY -RIGHTS AMENDMENT On Jan. 18,1977 — the day before it snowed for the fast and so far only time in Miami — Bryant and her supporters packed the county's Metro Com- mission chambers to pro- test an amendment to the anti -discrimination ordi- nance that added "affec- tional or sexual prefer - The amendment was introduced by Commis- sioner Ruth Shack, whose husband, Richard, was Bryant's agent. Commis- sioners wted 5-3 in favor, and Miami became the first major metro area in the U.S. to pass legislation protecting gays in employ- ment, housing and public seWeeks later, Bryant and other gay -right opponents petitioned to put the law up for public vote. She was supported by Miami Arch- bishop Coleman Carroll, who urged Catholics to reject it A nasty six-month conflict between competing campaigns ensured. Shack, who had been friends with Bryant, re- ceived death threats. "Having introduced the amendment to the ordi- nance which said gays should be accepted as human beings, the hate in the town was so ferocious Shack told the Miami Her- ald. "The hate mail, the death threats, the promise that I would never be able to walk the streets." In June, 69 percent of county voters repealed the law. Bryant declared a landslide victory. "People of all ages, gen- ders and nationalities spoke out about gay rights public- ly because of Anita Bryant," former Miami Herald gay issues reporter Steve Rathaus said. "She caused a lot of pain for a lot of people." While Bryant's campaign stirred homophobic fervor, she also galvanized gay rights activists, who later fought for gay mamage and gay adoption rights and protections for people with AIDS and for trans - gender people. DADE COUNTY: 'GROUND ZERO FOR THE NATIONAL GAY RIGHTS MOVEMENT "Everyone knows Stone- wall, and they often look at that as the birth of the gay rights movement, but 1 say Miami -Dade County was actually ground zero for the gay rights movement," Rodthaus said. The June 28, 1969, police raid on New Ycrk City's Stonewall Inn — a gay bar Greenwich Village — led to a series of protests and riots known as Stonewall. Eight years later, Bryant's high profde as a celebrity put Miami in the headlines. "Anita Bryant was a pioneer, a hero and the first parental rights champion in our ountry," said Anthony Verdugo, founder and executive director of the Christian Family Coalition Florida. He is a frequent speaker at Miami -Dade County school board meet- ings and favored ending "LGBTQ Month" recog- nition in public schools. His organization advocated for the defeat of Florida's abortion -rights Amend- ment 4. "She had a huge impact and will be remem- bered not as anti -anything but as pro family, pro chil- dren, pro parent, pm home. "She had the vision to see what was coming and foretold the battle we fight today recognizing that there is nothing civil or human or right about im- posing ideology under the cover of education." Verdugo said Bryant was "ahead of her time," citing controversies today such as the Moms for Liberty cam- paign to ban books in sc hools, anti -abortion groups' support of laws requiring parental noti- fication and consent for abortions, and the partici- pation of trans athletes in wgovernment sports. "The gove entis supposed to oversee educa- tion — the teaching of reading, writing, arithmetic — not indoctrination on political and ideological subjects," Verdugo said. "When a child comes home from school and says, 'Hey, dad, 1 teamed today there are 102 different genders; how are parents supposed to explain that? "Anita Bryant foresaw how we wadd go backward on Tide IX and allow men who identify as women to compete against women. How is that equal right?" Bryant, a mother of four, grandmother of seven, gave a voice to parents fright- ened about societal change, and they backed her, Ver- dugo said. PAYING THE PRICE FOR HER CAMPAIGN Bryant's career as an entertainer and product endorser went downhill and later collapsed as a result of her activism. Bryant was famous for her Florida Citrus Commis- sion that drew people to the state in the 1970s, singing "Come to the Florida Sunshine Tree" and proclaiming, "Break- fast without orange juice is like a day without sun- shine." She also endorsed Coca - Cot, Phillips 66 and Tup- perware. people. "We were elected to defend these people and provide the protections that they need," said Commis- sioner Audrey Edman who spearheaded the legis- lation. Sorenson, by then a Conner commissioner, added: "It's interesting to note that in the 16 years that have transpired since we passed the ordinance, while much catastrophe was predicted by the oppo- sition, the wodd has not come to an end-" Commissioners Esteban "Steve" Bovo, Jose "Pepe" Dian and Juan C. Zapata r were dissenters in the 8-3 vote. Bovo unsuccessfully 'We Are Everywhere and We Shall Be Free; states sign at a gay rally in Dade County on sought t° exempt gender June 24.1979, two years after the county repealed its gay -rights ordinance. identity and expression protections in bathrooms, The former beauty pa- geant queen and guest on the shows of Dick Clark, Ed Sullivan, Perry Como and jack Paar released 27 albums and had a number of radio hits, including "Paper Roses." She had performed on tons with Bob Hope and Billy Gra- ham, sang at the 1971 Sup- er Bowl and co -hosted the televised Orange Bowl parade for nine years. But after her Miami campaign, her wholesome public image was parodied by "Saturday Night Live," Johnny Carson and Carol Burnett, in the movie "Air- plane!" and in drag shows In October 1977, the gay tights activist Thom Hig- ginsa threw a pie in her face on live television, but she joked, "At least it's a fruit pie," and prayed that Higgins would be forgiven "for his deviant lifestyle." "She was blacklisted and got a raw deal, but like her or not, she stuck to her conrictions," Verdugo said. "She always said she hared the sin, not the sinner, because our faith teaches us to love. If you disagree with someone, that doesn't mean you hate them." UVED IN MASION IN MIAMI BEACH During her 20 years in South Florida, Bryant lived in a spacious waterfront house at 4682 North Bay Road in Miami Beach with her husband -manager, former W INZ disc jockey Bob Green, and thew chil- dren. Among their friends were Miami Dolphins play- ers when the Dolphins were in their heyday. Back then, Bryant was making 580,000 a year from com- mercials alone. "She says her politics are basically conservative, though she doesn't really understand 'all those terms' like liberal, conser- vative, reactionary, rad- ical," according to a 1972 Tropic Magazine story. "Every night before retiring to their king -sill bed, the Greens kneel together and pay at a genuine altar in their bedroom." They wrote "The Anita Bryant Story: The Survival of Our Nation's Families and the Threat of Militant Homosexuality" in 1977. Despite being vilified at protests and gay pride marches, Bryant traveled to other cities to rally against gay -tights laws. One of the initiatives she promoted to ban gay teachers was de- feated at the polls in Cali- fornia after President jim- my Caner, Gov. Jetty Brown and presidential hopeful Ronald Reagan denounced it. Ina 1980 Ladies Home Journal article, Bryant seemed to temper her views: "I'm more inclined m say live and let live, just don't flaunt it or try to legalize it." Bryant divorced Green that year and moved to Alabama, then Georgia. In 1990, she married Charlie Dry, a forme NASA test astronautrand they tried to resurrect her career with snows that combined singing and preaching in Tennessee, Missouri, Arkansas and Florida. They filed for bankruptcy twice. They moved to their home state of Oklahoma d founded Anita Bryant Ministries International in 2006. In 2021, one of Bryant's granddaughters came out on a Slate podcast. "I'll just say that l don't hate my grandma," Sarah Green told Slate, explaining that Bryant had told her homo- sexuality was a delusion vented by the devil "I just kind of feel bad for her." Bryant's family published an obituary stating that she died Dec. 16 surrounded by family and friends. Bryant was loom in 1940 in the small town of Bamsdall, Oklahoma, where she began singing at her fain- ily's church at age 5 As for Miami-Dade's gay tights law, it was proposed and passed again, by one vote, in 1998. Commission- er Katy Sorenson sponsored it The law was expanded in 2014 to protect transgendee and gender nonconforming locker rooms, showers and dressing rooms. Like Bryant, conservative oppo- nents warned about open- ing spaces where pedo- philes or groomers of vul- nerable children could flourish. "When do somebody's rights begin, and when do somebody's rights end?" asked Bow — now Hialeah mayor —duringafar- hon debate. "The right of privacy. The right of safety. FROM PAGE 3A BLUE ZONES people are as they age. Communities that have participated in the Blue Zones initiative "have en double-digit drops in obesity and smoking rates, economic invest- ment in downtown corri- dors, grant funding awards to support policies and programs to improve health equity as well as a measurable savings in health care costs," Miami Beach said in a news release. Miami Beach city com- missioners voted unani- mously in June to set aside 8220,000 for the assessment and work needed to turn Miami Beach into a "Blue Zones" city. The funding will cover the six-month as- sessment, the develop- ment of a plan for the city, and the crafting of a pro- posal fora five-year part- nership with Blue Zones, according to city docu- ments. The city plans also to seek local sponsorships to help fund the program. The wellness plan that will be created for Miami Beach, which attracts millions of tourists a year and has more than 79,000 residents, is ex- pected to "look like noth- ing that we've ever done before because Miami Beach is so unique," Dan- ny Buettner, the founder's son and the current exec- utive vice president and chief development officer of Blue Zones, told the Miami Herald in a phone interview. THE PATH TO BECOMING A BLUE ZONE Miami Beach's Blue Zones assessment will involve meetings and focus groups with more than 200 people across Miami Beach, including residents, business own - • and faith and cultural organizations. Blue Zones employees will review data and tom the city to identify strengths, weak- • , opportunities and challenges. "This is a dating per- iod," Danny Buettner said. "We're getting to know Miami Beach. Mia- mi Beach is getting to know Blue Zones." And Blue Zones is start- ing to get a vibe for the city. Miami Beach has its "own sense of identity," an engaged and support- ive City Commission, which is key to advancing policy recommendations, and also has a "strong fitness culnue, which is very unique across hun- dreds of American com- munities," he said. A town ha8 on Feb. 5 at the New World Center's Tmist Pavilion near Lin- coln Road will gamer community input. During the event, a presentation on Blue Zones research and how Blue Zone traits have been used in more than 90 communities in the country will be given by Danny Buettner, who also serves as the compa- ny's spokesperson. Once Miami Beach's assessment is complete, Blue Zones workers will create a blueprint for the city of changes that can be made through the years to help improve the Life Radius," which is the area close to home where most people spend 90% of their lives. Some of the initiative's goals include reducing the prev- alence of disease in city residents, lowering health-care costs and, ideally, helping the com- munity "mimic the effect of living in one of the original Blue Zones, where your environment literally shapes you," he said. "At the end of the day, Blue Zones doesn't do this to Miami Beach," he said. "The ingredients are al- ready there." FLORIDA BLUE ZONES If all goes well, Miami Beach could be the firs) city in South Florida to receive a Blue Zones cer- tification, which means the community has start- ed policies and initiatives designed to promote healthy lifestyles. 5o far, eight Southwest Florida communities have received a "Blue Zones Community" certification, in a process that took seven years. The commu- nities are Naples, Immo- kalee, Bonita Springs, Estero, Golden Gate, East Naples, Marco Island and Ave Maria, a Collier County town created by Barron Collier Companies with Tom Monaghan, founder of Domino's Pizza. Duval County's Jacksonville is also in the process of becoming a Blue Zones community. Miami Beach wants to be next. Last year, some interna- tional fdm festivals — in- cluding one in Sweden and Amsterdam — became fraught with controversy over their handling of Is- raeli and pro -Palestinian filmmakers, according to The Forward, a Jewish news publication. In the fall of 2024, a pro -Palestinian group, the M illy Palestine Coalition, called for the Israeli Film Festival to be canceled, claiming the event was sponsored by Israel Bonds. "Many Israeli filmmak- ers have faced exclusions at other international fes- tivals," Shteyrenberg said. "_. It's dear that these actions create significant barriers for artists who are already navigating im- mense personal and profes- sional challenges." In response, the Miami Jewish Film Festival is premiering more than 30 Israeli fdms, as a way to provide a platform for the filmmaker; said Shteyren- berg. "We hope other festivals round the world will join us in standing by these stores and promoting understanding within their communities — Jewish and on-lewish alike," Shtey- renberg said, adding that the Miami festival remains committed to allowing freedom of expression while also elevating "film- makers whose stories need to be seen and heard." He said the war and controversy only bring more urgency to the stories the festival is trying to uplift, including the 13 Films addressing the at- tacks of Oct. 7, 2023, through sum rs stories and dontmentaries. He listed a few films he considers standouts: • The Stronghold, a gritty and thrilling war film that comm emorates tes the 50th anniversary sary of the Yom Kippur War. The event at Miami Theater Center in Miami Shores will include an appearance from renowned Israeli actor, Michael Aloft', who will introduce the fdm and participate in a Q&A after the screening. "With its intense story and Aloni's magnetic presence, this fdm is a must -watch for fans of high -stakes action and exceptional acting," Shteyrenberg said- • Tarami, a Venice Film Festival winner and co -directed by Israel's only ever Oscar winner, Guy Natty, and Iranian filmmaker Zar Amir Ebrahimi, the fdm follows an Iranian judo fighter's decision to defy her government's Ntimatom which puts her freedom and her family's safety at risk. The event — at Miami Theater Center — mares the film's East Coast premiere. The World WW Tremble, directed by Oscar -nominee Liar Geller and starring Oliver Jackson -Cohen ("The Haunting of Hill House"), tells the true story of the first Holocaust survi- vors to escape the Chelmno extermination camp. The fdm will be making its world premiere at the Mia- mi Theater Center on Jan. 16. "As Holocaust survivors dwindle and anllsemitim rises, The World Will Trem- ble presents a vital remind- er of the importance of preserving history and honoring those who resist- ed," Shteyrenberg said. Swedlshkayt YldUfe Crisis in Sweden brings some humor and lighthean tedness to the festival. The film fellows the Jewish comedy duo "YidLife Gri- n a journey to Sweden to uncover hidden Jewish culture and surprising Yiddish quirks, "proving that Jewish joy —and kveU- ing—knows no borders." The screening event fea- tures a live performance and a Q&A from comedi- ans Eli Batalion and Jamie Erman. Sabbath Queen, a film made over 21 years that follows Rabbi Anlichai Lau-Lavie, the heir to 38 generations of Orthodox rabbis, as he reconciles his ancestral legacy with his queer identity. The premiere event will take place under the stars at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden, with both Sandi and Amichai in attendance to share their stories. Film classics will also be celebrated. Those include a 30th anniversary screening of Martin Scorsese s "Casi- no,"starring Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone and Joe Pesci, at the Bill Cosford Cinema. MADE IN MIAMI FILMS One "must -see" world premiere, according to Shteyrenberg, also hap- pened to kick off the two - week festival. "Soul of a Nation," di- rected by Venezuela -barn Filmmaker Jonathan Jaku- bowie., is a documentary about Israel in the turbu- lent aftermath of the Oct- 7, 2023 Hamas attacks "Choosing 'Soul of a Nation' as the opening film was no accident — it's a deliberate and essential statement" Shteyrenberg said about the fdm, which premiered on Thursday at the Miami Beach Band - Weil. "It offers an unflinching yet hopeful look at how a nation on the brink of col- lapse can rediscover its strength through unity and resilience," he said. The festival also spot- lights local talent with films that share Miami stories or were made by Miami na- tives. "Miami Schmana," for example, is a documentary that tells the story of the immigrant legacy that helped shape the American garment industry, set in a post -World War II Miami and expanding through the 1980s. In "Milk & Honey, Blood & Tears," Miami -based Filmmaker Leslie Benitah, chronicles the resilience and recovery of Kibbutz Beer, an Israeli communi- ty near the Gaza border, following the Oct. 7 at- tacks The film contrasts the kibbutz's peaceful past with the harsh realities of healing and surviving a tragedy. Another fdm from a Miami native, called "Oc- tober HBte," premieres at The Hub at Temple Beth Am, Pinearest, at 3 p.m. Sunday, tan. 12. The documentary by Wendy Sachs explores antisemitim on college campuses following the October 7 tragedy. Sachs was born in South Miami and went to Temple Beth Am growing up according to a Miami Herald article. "I grew up at the day school — from pre-school when 1 was 4 years old until I was in sixth grade," Sachs told the Miami Her- ald. Hannon City Clerk Ad No. 43642 MONDAY MNWrr O 1025 MIAMI HERALD FROM PAGL 3A FILM FESTIVAL world of arts and culture. Last year, some inteme- tional film festivals— in- cluding one in Sweden and Amsterdam — became fraught with controversy over thew handling of Is- raeli and pro -Palestinian filmmakers, according to The Forward, a Jewish news publication In the fall of 2024, a pro -Palestinian group, the Philly Palestine Coalition, called for the Israeli Film Festival to be steeled, claiming the event was sponsored by Israel Bonds. "Many Israeli fdmnuk- en have faced exclusions at other intemalional fes- tival;" Sh3eyrenberg said. ".-- It's clear that these actions create significant barriers for artists who are already navigating im- mense personal and profes- sional challenges." In response, the Miami Jewish Film Festival is premiering more than 30 Israeli films, as a way to provide a platform for the filmmakers, said Shteyren- be"We hope other festivals around the world will join us in standing by these stories and promoting understanding within their communities — Jewish snd on -Jewish alike," Shtey- renberg said, adding that the Miami festival remains committed to allowing freedom of expression while also elevating "film- makers whose stories need to be seen and heard." He said the war and controversy only bring more urgency to the stories the festival is toying to uplift, including the 13 films addressing the at- tacks of Oct. 7, 2023, through survivors' stories and documentaries. He listed a few films he considers standouts: • The Stronghold gritty and thrilling war film that commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War. The event at Miami Theater Center in Miami Shores will include an appearance from renowned Israeli actor, Michael Aloni, who will introduce the files and participate in a Q&A alter the screening. "With its inlet). story and Aloni's magnetic presence, this film is a must-walch for fans of high -stakes action and exceptional acting," Sh3eyrenberg said. • Tatami, a Venice Film Festival winner and co -directed by Israel's only ever Oscar winner, Guy Naniv, and Iranian filmmaker Zar Am1 Ebrahimi, the film follows an Iranian judo lighter's decision to defy her government's ultimatum which puts her freedom and her family's safety at risk. The event — at Miami Theater Center — marks the film's East Coast premiere. The World Will Tremble, directed by Oscar -nominee Liar Geller and starring Oliver Jackson -Cohen ('"The Haunting of Hill House"), tells the true story of the fast Holocaust survi- vors to escape the Chelmno extermination camp. The Film will be making its world premiere at the Mia- mi Theater Center on Jan. 16. "As Holocaust survivors dwindle and anlisemilism rises, The World Will Trem- ble presents a vital remind. r of the importance of preserving history and honoring thou who resist- ed," Shteyrenberg raid. Swedlshkayt: YldLlfe Crlals In Sweden brings some humor and lighthear- tedness to the festival. The film follows the Jewish comedy duo "YidLife Cri- sis" on a journey to Sweden to uncover hidden Jewish Culture and surprising Yiddish quirks, "proving that Jewish joy —and kvell- ing—knows no borders." The screening event fea- tures a live performance and a Q&A from comedi- ans Eli Relation and Jamie Elman. Sabbath Queen, a film made over 21 years that follows Rabbi Amichai Lau -davit, the heir to 38 generations et Orthodox rabbis, as he reconciles his ancestral legacy wills his queer identity. The premiere event will lake place under the stars at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden, with both Sandi and Anuchai in attendance to share their stories. Film classics will also be celebrated. Those include a 30th anniversary screening of Martin Scorsese's "Casi- no,"starring Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone and Joe Pesci, al the Bill Cosford Cinema. MADE IN MIAMI FILMS One "must -ire" world premiere, according to Shteyrenberg, also hap- pened to kick of( the two - week festival. "Soul of a Nation," di- rected by Veneniela-born filmmaker Jonathan Jaku- bowioo, is a documentary about Israel in the tutW- lent aftemsath of the Oct. 7, 2023 Hanus attacks "Choosing 'Soul of a Nation' as the opening film was no accident — it's a deliberate and essential statement," Shleyrcnberg said about the film, which premiered on Thursday at the Miami Beach Band - shell. "It offers an unflinching yet hopeful look at how a lion on the brink of col- lapse can rediscover its strength through unity and resilience," he said. The festival also spot- lights local talent with films that share Miami stories Or were made by Miami nor fives "Miami Schmatta," for example, is a documentary that tells the stay of the Immigrant legacy that helped shape the American garment industry, set in a post -World War 11 Miami and expanding through the 1980s- In "Milk & Honey, Blood & Tears," Miami -based filmmaker Leslie Benitah, chronicles the resilience and recovery of Kibbutz B0'eri, an Israeli communi- ty near the Gaza border, following the On. 7 at- tacks The film contrasts the kibbun's peaceful pas( with the harsh realities of healing and surviving a tragedy. Another film from a Miami native, called "Oc- tober H8te," premieres at The Hub el Temple Beth Am, Pinecrest, at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan 12. The documentary by Wendy Sachs explores antisemitism on college campuses following the October 7 tragedy. Sachs was bon in South Miami and went to Temple Beth Am growing sop, according to a Miami Herald article. "I grew up at the day school — from pre-school when I was 4 years old until 1 was in sixth grade," Sachs told the Miami Her- ald. "It's really a full circle mo ment."
