HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-24-0475City of Miami Resolution R-24-0475 Legislation City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 16887 Final Action Date: 11/21/2024 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION, BY A FOUR -FIFTHS (4/5THS) AFFIRMATIVE VOTE , WAIVING THE RESTRICTIONS RELATED TO STREET NAMING CONTAINED IN SECTION 54-137 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA ("CITY CODE"), AND CO -DESIGNATING NORTHWEST 2ND AVENUE BETWEEN NORTHWEST 62ND STREET AND NORTHWEST 59TH STREET AS "NAT MOORE WAY," TO HONOR THE LEGACY AND CONTRIBUTIONS OF NATHANIEL "NAT" MOORE TO THE CITY OF MIAMI; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICIALS. SPONSOR(S): Commissioner Miguel Angel Gabela, Commissioner Damian Pardo, Commissioner Joe Carollo, Commissioner Manolo Reyes, Commissioner Christine King WHEREAS, Nathaniel "Nat" Moore ("Moore") has made significant contributions to the City of Miami through his outstanding career as a professional football player with the Miami Dolphins and through his extensive community service; and WHEREAS, Moore was born in Tallahassee, Florida, in 1951, and grew up in Miami, Florida, where he attended Miami Edison Senior High School and Miami -Dade Community College; and WHEREAS, on the recommendation of his junior college football coach, Moore received an athletic scholarship to transfer from the University of Tennessee at Martin to the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, where he was a star running back for coach Doug Dickey's Gators teams in 1972 and 1973; and WHEREAS, as a junior in 1972, Moore led the Gators with 145 rushes for 845 yards and 9 rushing touchdowns, 25 receptions for 351 receiving yards and 4 touchdown catches, and 230 return yards, while earning first -team AII-Southeastern Conference (SEC) and honorable mention AII-American accolades; and WHEREAS, Moore graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor's degree in exercise and sport science in 1975, and he was inducted into the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame as a "Gator Great" in 1978; and WHEREAS, Moore was chosen by the Miami Dolphins in the third round as the 78th overall pick in the 1974 NFL draft, and he played for the Miami Dolphins for 13 seasons from 1974 to 1986; and WHEREAS, Moore was elected to the Pro Bowl in 1977, after a season in which he made 52 receptions and led the league with 12 receiving touchdowns, becoming the NFL receiving touchdown leader for the season; and City of Miami Page 1 of 3 File ID: 16887 (Revision:) Printed On: 8/11/2025 File ID: 16887 Enactment Number: R-24-0475 WHEREAS, Moore is immortalized in the famous "Helicopter Catch" video clip, while making a reception against the New York Jets at Giants Stadium in 1984 where he was hit simultaneously from opposite directions by two Jets defenders that sent Moore's body spinning into the air as he held onto the football for a completion; and WHEREAS, Moore was named the Dolphins' 1984 NFL "Man of the Year" and was awarded by the NFL Players Association the 1985 Byron White Humanitarian Award, which recognizes the player who went above and beyond to perform community service in their team's hometown; and WHEREAS, by the time Moore retired at the end of 1986, his 13th season with the Dolphins, he had broken almost every Dolphin receiving record; and WHEREAS, in 1987, Dolphins Founder Joe Robbie renamed the Dolphins' community service award to The Nat Moore Community Service Award in his honor; and WHEREAS, Moore is one of the most celebrated players in Dolphins history, having played in Super Bowls XVII and XIX, and establishing a positive reputation on and off the field with his humanitarian work and philanthropy; and WHEREAS, Moore has been the team's senior vice president of special projects and alumni relations since 2013, overseeing the Dolphins alumni activities and working closely with Dolphins Vice Chairman, President and CEO on a variety of special projects; and WHEREAS, in 2018, the organization partnered with the Nat Moore Endowment Fund to provide South Florida youth with the financial resources needed to pursue avenues of education and training for employment readiness; and WHEREAS, Moore resides in Miami with his wife, Pat, and continues to be an active and influential member of the community; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami wishes to honor Nat Moore's legacy and contributions by co -designating a portion of Northwest 2nd Avenue in his name; and WHEREAS, Ordinance No. 14317, adopted on September 26, 2024, provides that the restrictions related to street naming contained in Section 54-137 of the Code of the City of Miami, Florida ("City Code"), may be waived by a four -fifths (4/5ths) affirmative vote of the City Commissioners, or an unanimous vote of the quorum that exists because of either abstentions or vacancies resulting from resignation, death, suspension, or physical incapacitation; and WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of the residents of the City of Miami, Florida, to waive the restrictions contained in Section 54-137 of the City Code related to renaming streets in order to co -designate Northwest 2nd Avenue between Northwest 62nd Street and Northwest 59th Street as "Nat Moore Way" as a lasting tribute to his achievements and community service; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. The City Commission, by a four -fifths (4/5ths) affirmative vote, pursuant to Section 54-137 of the City Code, hereby waives the restrictions related to street naming contained in Section 54-137 of the City Code and hereby co -designates that portion of Northwest 2nd Avenue between Northwest 62nd Street and Northwest 59th Street within the City's jurisdictional limits as "Nat Moore Way." Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, and Solid Waste; the Miami -Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works; the Miami -Dade County Commissioner of District 3; the United States Postal Service; and, if a State of Florida road, to the Florida Department of Transportation, District Six, for sign installation within the newly designated roadway. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
