HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-24-0473City of Miami Resolution R-24-0473 Legislation City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 16872 Final Action Date: 11/21/2024 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION CODESIGNATING A PORTION OF NORTHWEST 19TH AVENUE FROM NORTHWEST 34TH STREET TO NORTHWEST 36TH STREET AS "MIRTA SANDRA FUENTES WAY" HONORING HER CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE CITY OF MIAMI ("CITY") AND THE GREATER MIAMI AREA, PURSUANT TO SECTION 54-137 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS AMENDED; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICIALS. SPONSOR(S): Commissioner Miguel Angel Gabela, Commissioner Joe Carollo WHEREAS, Mirta Sandra Fuentes was born on March 29, 1948, in Havana, Cuba, and immigrated to the United States in 1961, where she was reunited with her family in Washington D.C.; and WHEREAS, Mirta Sandra Fuentes married Francisco Manuel Fuentes in Northern Virginia at the age of 18, and their marriage spanned 56 years, including 7 years in Spain where Francisco completed medical school; and WHEREAS, after returning to the United States, the Fuentes family moved to Miami in 1982, Mirta Sandra Fuentes dedicated her life to helping others, particularly the most vulnerable in the community, becoming a Guardian Ad Litem in the State of Florida in 1993 and serving as the Director of Child Affairs for Amigos for Kids for 17 years; and WHEREAS, she pursued higher education and graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Liberal Studies from Barry University in 2001, later being recognized as a Distinguished Alumni for her professional achievements and contributions to society; and WHEREAS, Mirta Sandra Fuentes worked with the Honey Shine Mentoring Program, Alonzo Mourning Charities, and held various professional roles, including Community Outreach Worker and Program Supervisor at the Children's Home Society, and Program Director of the Leadership Learning Center at St. John Bosco Church; and WHEREAS, her work impacted countless lives, providing after -school assistance, physical fitness, nutrition, and creative programs for hundreds of needy children and their families; and WHEREAS, Mirta Sandra Fuentes was affectionately known as the "Mother Theresa of Miami" for her tireless dedication to the community and her extensive volunteer work; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami wishes to honor Mirta Sandra Fuentes by codesignating a portion of Northwest 19th Avenue From Northwest 34th Street To Northwest 36th Street as "Mirta Sandra Fuentes Way" in recognition of her outstanding service and contributions to the community as well as the founder of the Leadership Learning Center at St. Juan Bosco; City of Miami Page 1 of 2 File ID: 16872 (Revision:) Printed On: 8/11/2025 File ID: 16872 Enactment Number: R-24-0473 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The Miami City Commission hereby codesignates a portion of Northwest 19th Avenue From Northwest 34th Street To Northwest 36th Street as "Mirta Sandra Fuentes Way." Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, and Solid Waste; the Miami -Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works; the Miami -Dade County Commissioner of District 3; the United States Postal Service; and, if a State of Florida road, to the Florida Department of Transportation, District Six, for sign installation within the newly designated roadway. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
