The man accused of accept- ing a bribe from Artiles in exchange for putting his name on the ballot has been fined S20,000 and formal- ly reprimanded by Gov. Ron DeSantis for violating cam- paign finance laws, in a separate ethics case. Jury selection begins Monday. During expected opening statements, state prosecutors will lay out a timeline explaining how they say Arles persuaded Alexis Pedro Rodriguez to run for the legislative seat by promising him S50,000, most of which was secretly funneled to him in cash, gifts and purchases. They'll say the former Marine and state senator coached the candidate on how to fie his paperwork and change his party affiliation, and even used a credit card to cover tuition casts for the candi- date's daughter and bought him machine pans at a Caterpillar store. Burn was Arles who was the stooge, his attor- neys will argue. They intend to paint Alexis Ralriguez as the architect of a plot to bleed Aniles of tens of thousands of dollars, and they aim to make the case that Rodriguez engineered a plan to profit from the sales of thousands of much - needed gloves and masks that Artiles managed to acquire when people were desperate during the early days of the pandemic. He ultimately stepped dawn under pressure as the Miami Herald prepared to publish a story that Artiles' political committee had paid thousands of dollars in consulting fees to a Hooters waitress and a Playboy model with little -to -no political experience. "It's clear there are consequences to every action, and in this area, I will need time for personal reflection and growth," Arles wrote in his letter of resignation to Senate Presi- dent Joe Negrm. Artiles spent the next three years working in property management and and has contin- ued as a lobbyist, mostly in Tallahassee. He openly talked fora time about a comeback, but denied as- sertions from some of his former colleagues that he was still involved in politics, lurking in the shadows. In the process, they say Arks made illegal cam- paign contributions and encouraged Rodriguez to mmit perjury by falsifying paperwork, prosecutors say. Arles even flew to TaBa- bassee to deposit Rodri- gues s qualifying check. Over the next few months, according to prose- ctmors, Andes made repeat- ed payments to Alexis Ro- driguez of between S3,000 and $5,000, documenting the transactions. In total, prosecutors allege, Artiles funneled 544,708.03 to Rodriguez in cash and gifts, using his credit card to purchase machinery and, once, to cover $6,798.39 in tuition fur for Rodriguez's daughter. Yet another time, prosecutors say, Arles' brother-in-law took Alexis Rodriguez to his bank, where he withdrew 59,000 and gave it to him to help pay legal fees. The relationship was fraught, according to Ar- tiles' indictment. Rodriguez believed Andes was holding back money he was owed, so he began finding ways to squeeze more money our of the former state senator. At one point, prosecutor say, Rodriguez got Arles to cut a $10,900 check to his business by telling him he had found a Range Rover for Anilei daughter, al- though the vehicle didn't exist. In another, Rodriguez charged Angles' credit card for purchases for his com- pany willow permission. Meanwhile, although Rodriguez didn't actively campaign, he was promoted to voters in mail advertise- ments funded by a dark - money political committee s a progressive Democrat, which prosecutors say was pan of a scheme to tilt the race and confuse voters about which Rodriguez they wanted to support. It worked. "That is me," Andes boasted about the victory at a party at an Irish pub called Liam Frzpatrick's in Semi- nole County. In 1959, the U.S. Army began building a network of tun- nels, carved inside the ice, that it hoped might be - me a launch site for nu clear missiles By 1967, the military had abandoned the idea and the base. But the samples of ice and frozen sediment that scientists extracted from deep underneath Camp Century are still providing insights into the planet's history. When Paul Bierman, a geologist at the University of Vermont, began study- ing some of these samples, he made a surprising dis- covery. Scientists had once believed that Greenland's ice sheet had been largely stable for the last 2.6 mil- lion years. But what Bier- man and his colleagues saw under the microscope provided clear evidence that parts of the ice sheet had temporarily melted away far more recently. Roughly 400,000 years ago, the site had been free of ice. Bierman spoke to The New York Tim. about this discovery, which he chron- icles in his new book, "When the Ice Is Gone." FROM PAGE IA INDICTMENT John Polit surrendered to federal authorities on Tues- day. At his first appearance in federal court in Miami, he was granted a S14 mil- lion personal surety bond secured with his family's assets. Pohl, who also had to make a 5100,000 de- posit as part of the bond, was released late Tuesday. He awaits arraignment on Sept. 19. His defense attorneys, Omar Ortega and Reinaldo Dorta, said they're review- ing the allegations. In an interview, Ortega noted that the indictments against the father and the each other." son "minor We will be defending John against these accusa- tions," Ortega said. POSSIBLE 20 YEARS In many ways, the prose- cution of the son will bea bookend to the fathet's case. In April, a 12-person federal jury in Miami unan- imously fond the 73-year- old former Ecuadorian official guilty of conspiring to commit money laundering and five related counts, carrying up to 20 years in prison. The elder Polly who immediately surrendered to prison au- thorities and is being held at the Miami Federal De- tention Center, is to be sentenced on Sept.27. The trial showcased not only Polit, but also the giant Brazilian engineering firm Odebrecht, which bribed the former Ecuador- an official over several years to make $100 [million of government Fes on a hydroelectric power pant project vanish. 1n 2016, Odebrecht admitted to a massive bribery scheme across the Americas and agreed to pay 12.6 billion in a record corruption settlement with the U.S. Justice Depart- ment. Polit's trial was a spinoff of that high -profile scandal, offering for the first time the prosecv6on of an Odebrecht-linked de- fendant on conspiracy and money laundering charges in the US. At the trial of the father in Miami, his defense at- torneys tried to compart- mentalize the roles of the father and son, suggesting that Carlos Polly who ac- cepted the brib. from the Odebrecht contractors, had nothing do with the corrup- tion proceeds allegedly client from the alleged being laundered by John bribery -fueled money- Polit in Miami But prose- laundering scheme, saying cntors Alexander Kramer the real criminals were the and Michael Berger argued two former Odebrecht through a seri. of witness- executives who eat plea dwive transfers, bank deals in Brazil and non. eposits and investments prosecution agreements that their roles were inter- with the U.S. government twined in a classic consols- for their testimony against acy. DEFEATED HEAVILY FAVORED INCUMBENT 1n November 2020, Garcia, a Republican challenger for the South- ern Miami -Dade Senate District 37 seat, which cut through southern Miami Beach, Coral Ga- bles and down through Cutler Bay, unexpectedly won the election by 32 votes after a recount. Incumbent Democrat Jose Javier Rodriguez was largely expected to win. Just over a year later, the Miami -Dade State Attomey's Office charged Artiles with elec- tion fraud. His 25-page arrest affidavit claims Artiles randomly contact- ed Alex Rodriguez in May 2020 and went on to tell him he would be coached, didn't have to campaign and instructed him to Be about his ad- dress, saying he lived in Palmetto Bay. FUNNELED NEARLY S45,000 TO GHOST CANDIDATE The state claims Artiles made illegal campaign contributions and en- couraged Rodriguez to commit perjury. Prose- cutors allege Artiles fun- neled $44,708.03 to Ro- driguez in cash and gifts, using his credit card to purchase machinery and, once, to cover S6,798.39 in tuition fees for Rodri- gues s daughter. Artiles was charged with making excessive campaign contributions, conspiracy to make ex- cessive contri- butions, falsely swearing an oath and lying on a campaign form. Artiles' defense at- torneys on Tuesday fol- lowed through on thew plan to portray the form - Marine and now lobby- ist as a stooge who fell for Alex Rodriguez's pathology. They argued Alex Ro- driguez was the architect of a plot to bleed Artiles of tens of thousands of dollars. GOP CONSULTANT TAKES STAND After opening state- ments Tuesday, a rarely seen Republican political consultant who runs a marketing and public opinion research compa- ny out of Gainesville called Data Targeting, took the stand. Patrick Bainter tested that he paid Artiles $15,000 a month and sent S100,000 to a political - action committee on behalf of the former sen- ator for background in- formation on the incum- bent, lose Javier Rodri- guez. Bainter said he was asked to do so by the Florida Senatorial Cam- paign Committee in Tal- lahassee — he has been their lead consultant for almost two decades — in a quest to defeat the Democratic incumbent. What no one would open- ly say: Who paid Bainter to hire Artiles, who went on to spend almost S50,000 on ghost candi- date Alex Rodriguez? "We were looking for someone down here with intel," Bainter said under questioning from Van- derGiesen. 'THAT'S ME. THAT'S ALL ME: Next on the stand was Stephanie Smith, a lobby- ist for Tampa Electric. Smith was at a bar named Liam Fitzpatrick's during victory celebration for Republican state Sen. Jason Brodeur on Elec- tion Night 2020. Smith testified that when the Alexis wn Rodriguez. a ghost candidate who received 6,000 votes in a race that was won by 32 votes, is scheduled to testify today. results from Garcia's race against Jose Rodriguez appeared on the screen, she heard Artiles say: "That's me. That's all She also said she had no clue what he was re- ferring to but figured it not long after when media outlets began in- vestigating the surprising outcome of the South Dade Senate race. Smith said after a Miami Herald article came out detailing Artiles' brag at the victo- ry party, he made an "angry" phone call to her, complaining she had spoken to the Herald. Tuesday, under oath, Smith denied she spoke to the Herald. But the lobbyist said what followed were two attempts from Artiles to get her to sign affidavits saying she never heard what the Herald was alleging. "I felt I was being pres- sured. I didn't sign it," Smith said. "1 didn't want to at that point be pulled into whatever was going on. And I heard what he said." The trial continued Wednesday. Alex Rodri- guez, the ghost candi- date, a expected to take the stand today. GAME OF THE WEEK RAVENS (0.2) at COWBOYS (1-1) Line: BAL by 1. Cote's pick: BAL, 27- 24. TV: 4:25 p.m. Sunday, Fox The surprise is not oNy the records in this playoff - caliber matchup. It's the defensive problems — Dallas' against the nun, Baltimore's against the pass. So the great -running Ravens and the Cowboys' Dale Prescott and C0Dee Lamb all are seeing big gams; hen over/ under near 50 points. Might the Cowboys lose back-to-back home games? Might the Crows fall to 0-3? The latter is less likely. Dueling trends, with Dallas 12.2 in past 14 games following a loss, and Baltimore 5-1 in all- time seres. A big Lamar )Jackson game by both arm d leg will be the differ- ence, u his versatility gets the best of Micah Parsons and that Cowboys pass rush. Ravens have not started a season 0-3 since 2015, and won't this year. (Over/under on TV shots of a disappointed Jerry )ones up in his suite: 5'h.) THE REST OF WEEK 3: Thursday fight pick was lets (1-1, -6) over Patriots (1-1), 20-16. @Browns (1-1, -6 kg over Giants (0-2), 24-13: Took a shot on NYG up- setting Washington last week and got burned mar casco.. tam scow r Ravens Quarterback Lamar lacksan tames the ball dunng Baltimwes surprising loss to the Raiders on Sunday. The Ravens should get right this week against the Cowboys. 'cause close don't count. Tempted again here with all of Cleveland's injuries led by TE David Njoku out and DE Myles Garrett questionable. Plus Desh- aun Watson stinks. But venue sighs big here. Giants on 2-10 road skid; CLE on 6-1 run covering as home lave. Browns, with no takeaways through two games, will get a couple on Daniel Jones. @Titans (0-2, -2 K) over Packers (1-1), 20-17: Realty tough call, partly because Pack QB Jordan Love returned to practice Wednesday and might play after missing only one week with a knee sprain. Othenwise it will be Malik Willis again vs. his former team. Ailing back also could limit Gee Bees RBI Josh Jacobs. I don't bust Will Levis or his protection, but I do have faith in a big defensive showing at home. Titans giving up only 3.8 yards per play (tops in NFL) and will best a hobbled oppo- ne nt. @Colts (0-2, -115) over Bean (1-1), 23-20: Two struggling offenses. CHI can't protect rookie QB Caleb Williams (nine sacks), and Bears have worst yards -per -Play in league. And Indy's Antho- ny Richardson already has let By four INTs. Teams can run on Colts, but De'Andre Swift has been stuck in mud. So well anxiously trust Nags in home dome in near pick- em game. Texans (2-0, -2) over @Vikings (2-0), 27-23: GOTW first -alternate? Texans RB Joe Mixon and Vikes WR Justin Jefferson both have injuries and availability of each could be a game -swinger and complicates this call. Houston is now third-fave for Super Bowl at some spo, sbooks. Do we trust that? Sam Damold has Minty 2.0. Do we trust teat? Vikes on a 5-0 ism in series and a tempting home dog, but Damold is due a Damold game so I'm running a fade pattern on him and Mimiy. Give me C.J. Stroud and Stefon Diggs vs. subpar Vikes secondary. @Saints (2-0, -2 OS) over Eagles (1-1), 31-24: Another GOTW-worthy duel. N'Awlins offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak has been a one-man pa- rade as Saints have scored on every series thus far and QB Derek Cart looks like Derek Maserat. Philly iS coming off a demor- alizing Monday night late collapse vs. Atlanta, and now WR Al. Brown is out. Birds also are on l-8 skid. Having said all that, a Phils win would not sus. prise. Saint, can't sustain this phenomenal offensive star — but will for at least another week against an Eagles defense that has been capital-8 Bad. @Chargers (2-0, 01 K) over Steelen (2-0), 19-16: Upset! New Bobs coach Jim Harbaugh is winning with a hard lean on run game and defense. Isn't a pretty recipe or one pleasing to Justin Herb- ert's fantasy owners, but it's working entering this battle of unexpected early unbeaten. Herbert is iffy with a hurt ankle, but that doesn't bring the panic it used to. Chargers RB J.K. Dobbins has been a beast thus far but faces stout run-D in Pitt. Justin Fields takes snaps again for Steelen off two turnover - free games but faces an air -tight Bolts defense. "Under" is 14-3 in LAC's past 17 games and should continue. @Buccaneers (2-0, -6 VS) over Broncos (0-2), 23-17: Tampa continues as the most underappreciat- ed good team in NFL as Baker Mayfield continues to outplay his reputation. Denver sees as big future in Bo Nix, but he needs time, and his struggles have Broncos trying to be patient amid desperation. Heavy lean to Burs out- right but hunch Broncs with points as a strong Denver secondary slows the Mayfield Express. @Raiders (1-1, -5) over Panthers (0-2), 27-13: Carolina benched strug- gling second -year QB Bryce Young in favor of experienced fig -in Andy Dalton — and the betting line shrank. Which tells you how bad Young was. Dalton gives Can more hope right now. Also a game that threaten a major letdown by Raiders after last week's stunning upset of Baltimore, al- though home -opener at- mosphere should be anti- dote for that. Panthers have lost 10 straight on the road, Vegas will pound the ball on the ground, and Mau Crosby will have Dalton longing for the safety of the sideline again. 49ers (1-1, -7) over @Rams (0-2), 24-16: shell of a matchup due to injuries, with SF still mis- sing Christian McCaffrey and now Deebo Samuel and LAR without both top W Rs in Pub Natty and Cooper Kopp. That will make it tough to establish a ground game with Kyren Williams, who's off to a slow start. Niners coming off tough road loss at Vikings but are on 12-1 nun within division, and Frans defense will assert itself and own the day. Lions (1-1, -3) over @Cardinals (1-1), 28-24: Ancona costing off a win while Detroit travels to its first road game off a home loss. That had the Upset Bird circling this one and sniffing the home -dog Cardbirds. Is Zona finally rising with a healthy Kyler Murray and gifted Marvin Harrison Jr.? 1s Detroit oversold as a Super Bowl contender? This game will leg much. Lions WR Amon-Ra St. Brown will play a0er an injury, and Motown have the better of an improved Cards D. Lions are 5-1 ATS as a road favorite since last Chiefs (2-0, -3 K) @Falcons (1-1), 24-16.: Atlanta needed a dropped Saquon Barkley catch and a late Kirk Cousins mirs- cle to slum Eagles last week. Does that mean the Dirty Birds are good? Let's find out in this Sunday righter. Reigning two- e champion Chiefs are without injured RB Isiah Pacheco, but expect a breakout game from a slow -starting TE Travis Kelce. By the way, Patrick Mahomes is super -good indoors: 10 career starts in domes, 10-0 record, 23 TDs, two picks. Bank it @BIW (2-0, -5) over Jaguars (0-2), 28-17: Monday night double - header's ewly game finds Josh Allen only 3.5 on MNF and Trevor Law- rence 0-1 on the Monday stage. But Allen b sailing unbeaten while T-Law has struggled early under the t of hisweight huge con- tract the extension. Also the Bills are way rested after playing last Thursday in the beatdown in Miami. Jax beat the Buffs 25.20 last season and tempts getting five points. But revenge is sweet. @Bengal. (0-2, -7 SS) over Commanders (1-1), 31-16: Monday's late game delivers a QB duel between former LSU Heu- pun Joe Bur- row winners Daniels. Cincy is in early must -win mode from an 0-2 hole and should play like at home in prime time — with Burrow el. al feasting n a bottom -der W uhing- ton defense. Commanders one of only three teams without a turnover yet but bet that ends in a tough road test for the rookie Daniels. (Note: Betting lints an courtesy ESPNBet as of Thursday mid -afternoon.)
