The annual mean air temperature of a city with 1 million people or more can be 1 .8-5.4°F (1-3°C) warmer than its surroundings. In the evening, the difference can be as high as 22°F (12°C). Heat islands can affect communities by increasing summertime peak energy demand, air conditioning costs, air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, heat -related illness and mortality, and water pollution. This is most likely a reflection of a poor tree canopy coverage and an excess of hardscape materials. Global Surface UHI Explorer This app displays urban heat isiands (UHI) at a global scale. Use the search bar or click on the map to find your city. Once the UHI map appears, click anywhere on the map, and the cluster mean statistics will appear in the space beiow. You also have the option to download the gridded UHI intensity rasters for the selected urban cluster at the bottom.
