Henson Cly Clerk Ad No. 40534 MIaNYNO 6 Xg1 MIAMI HIRALD Native son Maclntyre birdies 18 to narrowly win Scottish Open F. Level Medea Robert Maclntyre bird- ied the final hole to win his home country's tour- nament, shooting 3-under- par 67 on Sunday in the Scottish Open at North Berwick. Macintyre, who was clearly a crowd favorite at The Renaissance Club, finished at 18-under 262. That gave him a one-shot victory over Australia's Adam Scott, who also posted 67 and finished earlier with a two -shot lead. Maclntyre, who won last month's Canadian Open, had time to catch up. He used an eagle on the par-5 No. 16 to make a move and then finished it on No. 18. Scott was bidding for his first victory since the Gen- esis Invitational in Febeu- aty 2020. Scott, who toms 44 on Tuesday, had only one top-lO finish in his first 14 PGA Tour outings this year — and that came by tying for eighth place in February at the Phoenix Open. The Scottish Open is the first of two tournaments co-sanrtioned by the PGA Tour and European Tour. France's Romain Lan- gasque (64) was third at 15 under. Sweden's Ludvig Aberg, the third -round leader, slumped to 73 and shared fourth place at 14 under. Northern Ireland's Rory Mcilroy (68), the 2023 champion, and England's Aaron Rai (63), with the fourth -best score in the final round, finished at 14 under. Also in the fourth -place mix were Collin Morikawa (69), Sahith Theegala (69) and South Korea's Sunjae Ito (69). Even with two bogeys and a double -bogey, Scott looked to be in solid posi- tion. He notched birdies on three of the five par-3s in the final round. England's Richard Man- sell turned in a 61 on Sun- day, rising to a tie for 10th at 13 under. He had a bogey at No. 2, then ripped off 10 birdies the rest of the way. He record- ed 29 on the backside. Four others — Wynd- ham Clark (62), Sweden's Alex Noren (65), France's Victor Peres (65) and Canada's Corey Conners (67) — also finished in that logjam at 13 under. ELSEWHERE • Els breaks through: Ernie Els secured the first senior major champion- ship of his career Sunday, winning the Kasig Com- panies Championship on Sunday at Firestone Coun- try Club in Akron, Ohio. Els posted a Final -round, 2-under-par 68 to finish the week at 10-under 270, hanging onto defeat South Korea's Y.E. Yang (66 Sunday) by one shot. The former World No. 1 from South Africa won a pair of U.S. Opens and a pair of Open Champion- ships during his Hall of Fame career, but Els had iJs.. Els had 11 previous top-10 finishes at senior majors, including top -fives at each of the past four Kaolig Companies Cham- pionships (previously known as the Senior Play- ers Championship). "I've just been watching Steve (Stricken( do it the last couple of years since I've been out here. He's been the man, him and Bernhard (Langer( and some of the other guys," Els said on the Golf Chan- nel broadcast. "I like to work on my game still. I'm trying to keep myself healthy." •Auto Racing: Will Power edged Alex Felon by 0.3915 seconds in the Hy-Vee One Step 250 on Sunday to claim his first win at Iowa Speedway. With the victory, Power trimmed Palms title lead to 35 points with sic races remaining. "I've been trying to win this race for years, so I'm over the moon," Power said after the race. "We're right back in the game." Power's Team Penske teammate Scott McLaugh- lin, who won Saturday's Hy-Vee Homefront 250, finished thud. Power, who started 22nd, led 51 taps of the 250-lap race en route to his fast win on an oval since Pocono in 2019. In Saturday's race, he started fourth but finished 18th. He moved into second on the first round of pit stops, then grabbed the lead on lap 206 after his second pit stop — nearly nine -tenths of a second faster than Palou's pit stop. The race was marred by crasha massive on the last lap involving Sting Ray Robb, Kyle Kirkwood, Alexander Rossi and Ed Carpenter. Robb's car went air- borne and landed on its aeroscreen. Safety workers were able to extricate Robb who was placed on a stretcher and gave a thumbs -up the crowd as he was transported into an ambulance. "Sting Ray is doing well. He's awake, alert and in good condition. We're going to send him to the hospital for precautionary measures to get some advanced imaging," Dr. Jolia Vaiaer, medical di- rector for tndyCar, told NBC Sports. Carpenter, Rossi and Kirk..wd were able to walls away from the crash. • NFL: Former NFL wide receiver and special teams player Jacoby Jones has died, three days after his 40th birthday. No cause of death has been revealed. His passing was con - Firmed by the Beaumont Renegades, which hired Jones as head coach and offensive coordinator for the indoor football team that is to begin play in 2025. The NFL Players Associ- ation said Jones' family reported that he "passed away peacefully at his home in New Orleans." "The family, including his mother, Emily and his son, little Jacoby, are to- gether and are asking for your prayers, privacy, and support as they navigate through this difficult time," the NFLPA state- ment added. Jones is best known for catching the "Mile High Miracle" on Jan.12, 2013, as well as recording two touchdowns in the Balti- more Ravens' 34-31 victo- ry over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII on Feb. 3, 2013. With his team facing a thud-and-30, Jones reeled m a game -tying 70-yard touchdown pass from Joe Flacco with 31 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter of Baltimore's AFC Divisional playoff game against the host Denver Broncos. Justin Tucker kicked a 47-yard field goal in the second overtime to fuel the Rav- ens to a 38-35 victory. Three weeks later, Jones had a 56-yard touchdown catch in the second quay ter and added a 108-yard kickoff return to begin the thud versus the 49ers. The latter stands as the longest return in postsea- son history. "We are completely heartbroken to learn about the passing of Jacoby Jones," the Ravens said in a statement. "Jacoby had the unique ability to con- nect with everyone he encountered. His char - ma, joy and love created one -of -a -kind presence that could tight up any room or brighten any dark day." " The large crowd of sup- porters, some of whom showed up as early as 7 a.m., came to hear Trump speak at the Buder Farm Show expo, lust two days before Republicans gather in Milwaukee to nominate him for president for a third straight time. The long, hot day hadn't discouraged the former president's supporters, who broke into spontane- ous Trump chants or held up signs through the after- noon, fanned themselves with pieces of paper or poured water over their heads as the heat persisted. When the former presi- dent finally came onstage, he launched into familiar themes, including the false claim that the 2020 election was stolen. He endorsed former hedge fund CEO David McCor- mick for Pennsylvania's U.S. Senate seat. He was talking about immigration when the gunshots began, shocking thou in the crowd and sending the Secret Service stumbling to protect the tooter president. Todd Gerhart felt The Butler Farm Show Grounds in Butler, Pennsylvania, where former President Donald Trump was shot on Saturday. This view looks east from the main spectator parking lot on Sunday. "sheer fear" when he heard the gunshots rever- berate throughout the venue. "Everybody was running," Gerhart said. "It wa s pandemonium." Gerhart runs the stand Make Honey Great Again, which sells bottles of ho- ney at Trump rallies. "Why do you hate this man so much when he's doing it for us?" Gerhart asked. "He's not doing it for himself. He's doing it for America." Teresa Coulson held onto Lolou Rose in the aftermath of the shots. "I knew that they were going to try to do this to him," Coulson, of Grove City, said, holding back tears. "I just didn't think it would be today. They'll do any- thing to stop him from winning." Rose, 55, of Weirton, West Virginia, said her first thoughts were that the pops were fireworks. Once she realized "that it's gunshots ... you just feel the wave happening all over and we all come down." Nicole Yams, 42, screamed, "Get him off the stage" as shots rang out and Trump fell behind the lectem. As she watched, Secret Service covered him. When he stood up, Trump gave a fist pump to has supporter. Greg Karis, 38, was with has mother, who was being treated by medics for heat exhaustion, and her 23- year-old brother, Jayme Karts, when the shots rang out. "I needed to know ex- actly where it was, where the threat was, how far away the threat was," said Greg Karis, who said he has medic training. The Buller Farm Show rally, coming lust before the Republican National Convention starts, had drawn a crowd of devoted Tromp supporters eager to hear their candidate. Thousands showed up to wait in the hot sun. Outside the gates, people waited almost a half hour to park. Others walked the meets with merchandise for drivers to buy as they waited. When the event began, they listened as warm-up speakers such as McCor- mick and Sean Parnell, a formercandidate for U.S. Senate, praised the nation and the GOP candidate's plans for its future. "You're all here for the same sons I'm here," McCormick said in his speech before Trump's appearance. "Because if you believe America is the greatest country in the world, and I do, I believe that, and if you believe you've been blessed by everything America has to offer ... and you believe America ism deep, deep trouble McCormick, running for the U.S Senate seat held by Democrat Bob Casey, touched on infadon, say- ing that young people can't afford the American dream and pointing to college protests about the Israel -Gaza war, suggest- ing that they occurred because of weak college leadership. "AIR of you need to treat this election Eke your life depends on it, because it does," McCormick said Before the event, sup- porters told reporters that they'd gotten up early and driven to hear Trump speak because they liked his policies on such issues as in0adon, support for the military and border problems. Nancy Riley, 92, of Pittsburgh, wsattending the rally with her friend Janet Clahery. Riley said she had been a Democrat for most of her life but chose to support Trump because she didn't like the way the country was head- ed. "Trump came along and he was a businessman so 1 decided to vote for him," she said. Stephen Paczek, 54, said he feels the country was better off four years ago when Tnunp was presi- dent. "We need to return to policies that ensure pros- perity for all Americans," Paczek, of Washington County, said while stand- ing along a barricade as he waited for the rally to start. After the shaking epi- sode that disrupted the rally Saturday evening, spectators compared notes, and many ex- pressed shock. The Karts brothers weren't surprised at the shooting attempt. Todd B. Homan Clgr Clerk Ad No 43644 10A I WY HERALD I MONDAY ART B 2021 What the Health Department cyber-attack means for you when requesting a death certificate PT HOWARD COHEN keekm@wamiMald... Weeks after Florida's health department teamed its vital statistics system had been hacked by cyb- er-thieves, the scenario for families seeking funer- al services is "chaotic," says Crystal Van Orsdel Merchant, assistant vice president at Van Orsdel Funeral & Cremation Service. The problem? The servers are not online and that has interrupted funerals and made it more difficult for people who need to obtain death certificates. These docmnents are required forpprocessing bank ac- t changes, filing in- datis claim or up- ng Social Security benefits. "To facilitate continued operations of death certif- icates, the department has worked closely with funeral homes and health care facilities to imple- ment offline procedures during this period," Flor- ida Department of Health spokeswoman Jae Wil- liams told News Service of Florida this week. It's not just death certif- icates that are the problem. The hackers also captured from the state Health Department Flor- idians' recent HIV test results, detailed doctors' notes and immunization d virus testing records. WHY DEATH CERTIFICATES ARE IMPORTANT A completed death certificate by the practi- tioner who attended to the deceased is required for legal purposes including probating estates, insur- e claims, Social Securi- ty, veterans benefits and retirement benefits, ac- cording to the state. The death certificate is also used by Florida to monitor leading causes of death, injuries, suicide and hom- icide related deaths, in- fant deaths or occupation- al related deaths. WHAT IF YOU NEED TO PLAN A FUNERAL NOW What does this mean for you if you need to arrange a funeral right now? "There will be de- lays in the process of obtaining the death certif- icate," said Van Orsdel Merchant, whose funeral home is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. HOW LONG ARE THE DELAYS? The usual processing time was three to five days and then it could take a week to 10 days to receive the death certif- icate. Van Orsdel Mar - chant said the delay in getting a death certificate will be about an extra week or so. "Even though the state and everyone is trying to come up with processes that can be as efficient as possible, the fact that we are on a manual system and not a completely automated system as we were before, adds time to the process because of many different factors. There are many entities involved, State Depart- ment of Vital Statistics, funeral homes, doctors, local medical examiner's office, local Bureau of Vital Statistics, U.S. Social Security Administration. Everyone is having to team a new process and adapt as we keep getting updated instructions." WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR CUSTOMERS WHO PURCHASED SERVICES FROM A FUNERAL HOME? The aftermath of the cyber-attack means that all funeral homes in Flor- ida are experiencing de- lays in obtaining death certificates. WHAT SHOULD YOU DO RIGHT NOW? Customers can take some steps to make it ea Said Van Orsdel Mar - chant "If someone in Florida has lost a loved one recently, around or after June 27, they should confine that the funeral home properly notified Social Security. If the funeral home was not able to do so because the Elec- tronic Death Registration System system went down, they should request a SSA-721 Statement of Death by Funeral Director form from the funeral home and fax, mail or deliver it in person to the Social Security Adminis- tration." Visit www.sse.gov for information. WHAT OBSTACLES CAN YOU EXPECT? Expect delays in the processing and receiving of a death certificate. Social Security is not be- ing notified electronically. Customers should con- firm U the funeral home is doing this task for them or if they must fax, mail or notify in person. People can expect significant delays when calling or visiting the local Bureau of Vital Statistics in re- gards to ordering death certificates, Van Orsdel Marchant said. Howard Cohen.' 305-376-3619, @HolaardCohen FROM PAGE 1A HACKERS breaches in Florida's his- tory and far more exten- sive than officials in Gov. Ron DeSantis' adminis- tration first acknowledged. Last week, a Depart- ment of Health spokes- person waited more than three days to respond to inquiries from the Herald/ Times about the hacking, then said that it suffered "a potential cyber inci- dent" at the state's online Vital Statistics system, used to issue birth and death certificates. That system remains down, frustrating Floridians needing to bury or mate loved ones. But many of the records released by the hackers are detailed test results labeled as coming from the Department of Health's Bureau of Public Health Laboratories. Three labs, inlackson- ville, Tampa and Miami, conduct tests for health departments and hospitals, including for infectious diseases such as HIV, hep- atitis and COVID-19. The files include names and in some cases intimate details written by doctors and nurses, such as one patient who was admitted to a South Florida hospital with multiple symptoms. Some people who tested positive or negative for hepatitis, dengue fever, salmonella, rabies and COVID-19 are included in the files. The records appear far from a comprehensive list of everyone in the state who tested positive for those diseases. Most re- cords viewed by the Her- ald/Times involve patients and hospitals in Broward County. As the state's public health agency, the Florida Department of Health, led by Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo, holds some of the state's most sensitive in- formation, including CO- VID-19 vaccine records, prescriptions for controlled substances and medical marijuana patient data. None of that information appears in the records in a comprehensive format Instead, the roughly 20,700 records are a hodgepodge of PDFs, doc- ument files, slideshows and spreadsheets. When a person's person- al data is illegally released, state agencies have to notify the victim "as expe- ditiously as practicable and withoutunreasonable delay," while taking into assDent the time needed to ess the breach and identify victims, according to state law. In the meantime, Wil- liams said department healthcare providers are encouraged "to stay atten- tive to alerts from the De- partment and follow those best practices dissemi- nated to secure data." Williams said the breach was part of a national wave of cyberattacks on health care providers. This week, RansomHub claimed to steal data from the pharmacy chain RiteAid. Earlier this year, hackers paralyzed the largest U.S. medical billing and payment system in the country, a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group. DeSantis' administration in recent years has strug- gled to manage the surge in cyberattacks. In the last three years, information on more than 10 melon Floridians — equivalent to nearly half of the state's population — has been exposed to hack - en during breaches at stare agencies, according to annual repo,. filed by the attorney general's office. FROM PAGE 3.1 LOBSTER found a ramp at Black point Marina. "It's all brand new. Brand new day," said Milton Bone1L "We're looking forward to it." Brian Garcia, 26, his girlfriend, Vanessa Cha- vez, 26, and their friend Bryce lessee, 33, returned from their expedition around 11 a.m. as the other boats were going out They departed the marina at 5:30 a.m. "We were trying to void all of this," Garcia said, noting the lines for the boat ramps. Getting an early start paid off for the friends. They hit their bag limit of six lobsters per person, per boat, even V it meant first waiting out some nasty weather. "It was raining in the morning, but once we got past the thunderstorms, we were good," lessee said. The trip was Chavez's first time hunting for spiny lobster. "1 was a little nervous about it at fast, but over- all, it was really good," she said. Alex Lage, 21, Marlon Gonzalez, 22, and Darien Gonzalez, 20, got out to their spot outside of Boca Chita around 7:30 a.m., which proved to be an opportune time for lobster fishing. "We limited out by 9:30 a.m., so it was good," Lage said. Others came back m the dock empty-handed. Dito Valdes and his friends got into the water only to find the unfottu- nate downside to lobster fishing — the bay bottom littered with lobster cara- paces, basically the heads of the lobsters after they've been detached from their tails, which is illegal. Lobsters must be brought back to shore alive and in one piece. "We lust saw a bunch of broken tails, but that was about it, brother," Valdes told the Miami Herald as he hooked his boat trailer back onto his truck. During regal. minisea- son, the Florida Keys is usually the desired desti- nation for people looking to fill their coolers with spiny lobster. Police agen- cies in the Keys were wor- ried that the extra day might stretch their officers thin as they prepare for the annual minson lo less than two weeks. As the afternoon moved along, however, that had not happened, Capt. Da- vid Dipre with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conser- vation Commission, told the Herald. "Overall, this minisea- mn working good so far. ere re seems to be plenty of locals taking advantage of it We're not inundated like we usually are in reg- ular miniseason, and we haven't found anyone who isn't a Florida resident trying to get in on the harvest," Dipre said. Maclntyre, who was clearly a crowd favorite at The Renaissance Club, fished at 18-under 262. That gave him a one-shot victory over Australia's Adam Scat, who also posted 67 and fished earlier with a two -shot lead. Maclntyre, who won last month's Canadian Open, had time to catch up. He used an eagle on the par-5 No. 16 to make a move and then fished it onNo. 18. Scat was bidding for his first victory since the Gen- esis Invitational in Febru- ary 2020. Scat, who toms 44 on Tuesday, had only 11 top-10 finish in his first 14 PGA Tour outings this year - and that came by tying for eighth place in February at the Phoenix Open. The Scottish Open is the first of two tournaments co -sanctioned by the PGA Tour and European Tour. France's Romain Lan- gasque (64) was third at 15 under. Sweden's Ludvig Aberg, the third -round leader, slumped to 73 and shared fourth place at 14 under. Northern Ireland's Rory Mcllroy (68), the 2023 champion, and England's Aaron Rai (63), with the fourth -best score in the final round, finished at 14 under. Also in the fourth -place mix were Collin Morikawa (69), Sahith Theegala (69) and South Korea's Sunjae lm (69). Even with two bogeys and a double -bogey, Scott looked to be in solid posi- tion. He notched birdies on three of the five par-3s in the final round. England's Richard Man- sell turned in a 61 on Sun. day, rising to a tie for 10th t 13 under. He had a bogey at No. 2, then tipped off 10 birdies the rest of the way. He record- ed 29 on the backside. Four others - Wynd- ham Clark (62), Sweden's Alex Noren (65), France's Victor Pere: (65) and Canada's Corey Conners (67) - also fished in that logjam at 13 under. ELSEWHERE • Els breaks through: Ernie Els secured the first senior major champion- ship of his career Sunday, winning the Kaolig Com- panies Championship on Sunday at Firestone Coun- try Club in Akron, Ohio. Els posted a f d-round, 2-under-par 68 to finish the week at 10-under 270, hanging on to defeat South Koreas Y.E. Yang (66 Sunday) by one shot. The former World No. 1 from South Africa won a pair of U.S. Opens and a pair of Open Champion- ships during his Hall of Fame career, but Els had Robert Maclntyre celebrates Open on Sunday in North B yet to break through at a senior major despite myr- iad dose tens. FROM PAGE U BUTTERFLY Sandy Koi — who is a post -doctorate scientist from Florida International University, studied insect ecology and conservation and is also called the gum of the atala — said with the demise of coontie in the wild, gardens and yards now make up about 50% of thew food source. Koi received a grant in 2004 to distribute thousands of atala in the Everglades in an effort to further expand and protect the population. At the start, researchers were sticklers about not introducing the butterfly to areas where it wasn't origi- nally found. But then the preservation thought changed If another hurri- cane like Andrew came, the entire population could be knocked out, Koi said. Finding coontie in the wild again was a key to long- term survival. "The butterfly is con- fined to eating what little is left of it," Koi said. "If it weren't for the gardens, the butterflies would have nowhere to go." SAVING THE CYCADS At Montgomery, the atala success story poses a different preservation challenge. The thousands of cycads planted there can't be replaced with a trip to Lowes or a neigh- borhood nursery. Seeds for Montgomery's plants have been collected in ore than 50 expedi- tions in other countries. The mirvion at the center is to help maintain global genetic diversity, meaning many of the cycads in the collection are rare. Some cycads look like palms but they differ dra- esaricslly. They typically grow far more slowly and reproduction can also beslow. Cycads produce "pollinator cones," not unlike pine cones. But because they're also what botanists cad "dioedous," meaning there are male seed cones and female seeds, it takes two to tan- go. In nature, the process is often aided by certain beetles or the wind. But at Montgomery, staff often hand -fertilize seeds and keep them in a fridge until ready to plant — like a sperm seed, bank. A warming climate also could impact cycads — but, in an unusual effect, per- haps for the better. After heat waves, one botanical garden produced the Unit- ed Kingdom's first male and female cones in 60 million years. Meta butterflies are held in an insect cage outside of Zoo Miami's 'butterfly bunker' before their release on Jute 20. Vince Ramirez, left, curator of cycads at the Montgomery Botanical Center. helps environmentalist Zac Cosner adopt atala caterpillars on lune 26 in Coral Gables. The center wants people to adopt atala caterpillars because of the damage that they inflict on the site's plants. Griffith, Montgomery's executive director, said the caterpillars can threaten the long-term conservation of some cymd species and controlling them has eaten up a lot of time and labor as well in the past few years Montgomery staffers have tried a lot of things. They've applied soapy water to discourage egg - laying and erected anti - butterfly cages around some newly planted cy- cads. They've also tapped NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA PLEASE ALL TAKE NOTICE THAT a meeting of the City of Miami Commission has been scheduled for Thursday, July 25. 2024. at the City of Miami City Hall, 3500 Pan American Drive, Miami. Zoo Miami is also a major partner, doing res- cue that have collected more than 4,000 atala caterpillars and pupae this year, and nearly 6,000 in both 2022 and 2023. Caterpillars are put directly on coontie that the zoo planted near a pine rods - land forest, and chrysalises are brought into what the zoo calls a "butterfly bun- ker," which was originally used to hold weapons in World War II. The chrysalids stay in- side of the bunker in pop- up mesh butterfly cages until they hatch and are ready to be released at the zoo. They also do give- aways of chrysalises ready to hatch into butterflies for Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden member who are in the citizen -science pro- gram and agree to keep a garden of native plants to attract tact pollinators with no pesticides. Koi said in the long-term the best way to preserve an atala population is by rely- ing on native coonde. Cycads are poisonous plants, and different varie- ties could hold different levels of toxins. If the ca- terpillars pick the wrong plant, she has seen them die. HOW TO ATTRACT ATALA TO YOUR GARDEN If you want to attract atala, the best foss step is to find a nursery that sells Wcoontie and plant some. hile the butterflies, which can live for months, are pretty, what they do to the plants isn't. But the devoured plants typically rebound to host more butterflies. "If you don't have those plants you don't have a breeding population," Hammer said. 'Some people just think of them as pests. They don't want the caterpillars, but they want the butterflies as adults." Zoo Miami also has e guide with native plants, such as nectar sources like the beauty berry and but- tonbush, to attract butter- flies, and the University of Florida compiled a list of Homestead farms that sell native plants. If you don't know where to start, the Institute for Regional Conservation has a tool called natives for your neighborhood where you can type in your ZIP code and it'll show you what grew there. "The best thing you can do is plant coontie, make the most beautiful garden you can and the atala will c ," Hammersaid Ashley Miznazi is a cli- mate -change reporter for the Miami Herald funded by the Lynn and Louis Wolfson 11 Family Foundation in partnership with Animalism FurdingParrrers.
