It was 2005, and I was the Historic Preservation Officer for the City of Miami. We were considering designating our first commercial historic district, the Biscayne Boulevard/MiMo District. Many of the property and business owners were upset over the potential designation. No commercial district had ever been done before, and they were worried about economic impacts to their businesses. The City hosted a public workshop at Legion Park to explain the benefits that a district could have on that section of Biscayne Boulevard. As expected, many of the business owners did not have nice things to say. Mr. Powers, as a long-time local resident and friend to many of the business owners, got up and heartily denounced our efforts and insisted that a historic district was not going to help the many challenges experienced on the Boulevard at the time. I approached him after the meeting and suggested that maybe he would like to get together for lunch sometime so I could explain how preservation works. We did that, and I guess what I said made sense to him. Not only did he become one of our biggest supporters for the MiMo District, but he also then spearheaded the monumental effort to get his own residential district, Paim Grove, designated as a historic neighborhood. We became good friends and whenever I needed support on a controversial preservation item, he was happy to advocate on our behalf. If appointed to the HEP Board, I think Mr. Powers would offer great perspective, as someone who has seen the process work, and as someone who has seen how HEP Board actions and votes affect the residents. Jordan has worked at Heerim Architects & Planners in Seoul as Lead Designer and Project Manager and later, joined UNStudio in Amsterdam as Coordinating Architect where he practiced under Mr. Ben van Berk& and led the design and execution on several international projects including the Singapore University of Technology and Design. While at UNStudio, Jordan also led design efforts on the Library and Center for New Media in Ghent, Belgium, Zara's flagship store in Rome, and the 291' Annual Art Biennale Youturn Pavilion in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
