City of Miami Legislation Resolution Enactment Number: R-24-0162 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 15909 Final Action Date:4/25/2024 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION CODESIGNATING SOUTHWEST 2ND AVENUE FROM SOUTHWEST 26TH ROAD TO SOUTHWEST 27TH ROAD AS "ISIDOR COHEN ROAD" IN HONOR OF THE CONTRIBUTIONS MADE BY ISIDOR COHEN TO THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, PURSUANT TO SECTION 54-137 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS AMENDED; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICES. WHEREAS, Profiles in Black Miami ("PIBM") and The Curtis Foundation ("TCF") have proposed renaming Southwest 2nd Avenue between Southwest 26th Road and Southwest 27th Road as "Isidor Cohen Road" in recognition of his significant contributions to the community; and WHEREAS, despite not being of Black heritage, Isidor Cohen's and his family's contributions significantly influenced the Black community, prompting this recognition; and WHEREAS, Isidor Cohen, born on June 15, 1871, in Kiev, Ukraine, immigrated to the United States in the late 19th century amid political persecution; and WHEREAS, Cohen, a Jewish immigrant, found employment with the Flagler organization, which played a pivotal role in the development of Florida's railroad infrastructure, enhancing local economies; and WHEREAS, in 1896, Cohen was instrumental in the incorporation of Miami, actively participating in the foundational election and advocating for the contributions of Black community members; and WHEREAS, Cohen's establishment of a men's clothing and dry goods business marked the beginning of a long and beneficial involvement in Miami's commercial and cultural development; and WHEREAS, his service in various influential roles, including multiple presidencies of the Miami Chamber of Commerce and leadership positions in local organizations, significantly shaped Miami's community services; and WHEREAS, the Cohen family's legacy includes foundational roles in establishing key community institutions such as the Temple Beth David Synagogue, the first Jewish place of worship in Miami; and WHEREAS, Isidor Cohen's dedication extended through his family, with his wife founding the Jewish Home for the Aged, his daughter establishing the March of Dimes in Miami and contributing to the founding of what is now the Frost Museum of Science, and his grandson serving as City Attorney for various Miami -Dade County cities and contributing to The Black Archives; WHEREAS, in light of these substantial contributions, the City Commission deems it fitting to honor Isidor Cohen by codesignating Southwest 2nd Avenue as "Isidor Cohen Road"; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Commission hereby codesignates Southwest 2nd Avenue from Southwest 26th Road to Southwest 27th Road as "Isidor Cohen Road," in honor of the contributions made by Cohen to the City. Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, and Solid Waste; the Miami -Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works; the United States Postal Service; and, if a State of Florida road, to the Florida Department of Transportation, District Six, for sign installation within the newly designated roadways.
