The origin of the signs can be traced back to January 2023, when then -city of Miami Commissioner Alex Diaz de la Portilla sponsored legislation that more than doubled the limit on the kind of billboard allowed in that part of Miami — from 750 square feet to 1,800 square feet. In the 10 months that followed, Diaz de la Portilla's political committee took in $225,000 from a different committee that received most of its funding from Orange Barrel Media, an Ohio advertising company that struck a seven -figure deal with PAMM to build the billboard and sell the space. The entity that gave the money to Diaz de la Portilla's political committee is run by an Orange Barrel lobbyist, former Miami Commissioner Marc Sarnoff. Diaz de la Portilla, was suspended from office in September after an arrest on bribery charges in a separate matter. State guidelines are maximum size (950 sq ft) and maximum height (65 ft). These signs would be maximum size (1,800 sq ft) and maximum height (100 ft). These exceptional guidelines are for oversized "on -premise" signs originally intended to be "on -premise," which means they advertise the establishment's principal activity and DO NOT generate revenue. The PAMM and the Arsht Center have already spoken on the record, saying that these signs will generate revenue for their organizations and that this lack of revenue will harm their annual budgets - directly violating the state's requirements. The size of these monster signs, the invasiveness of the light intruding into people's homes, the tacky nature of commercial advertising that will be changing every eight seconds — is unacceptable. We are not Times Square, Las Vegas or Hong Kong harbor. This city is growing up from the party capital of the world to a financial powerhouse. These signs will bring that growth backward. Please consider Listening to the residents of the community who chose to live and invest in downtown Miami based on the beautiful community design that is in place without this digital blight and endless amount of light pollution that will damage the quality of all of our lives. Thank you. Are you a lobb yist? No Sam Tho Sama 33133 N/A As a Miami Native, born and raised. I am before you today to speak as77 out against the ridiculous LED billboards that are popping up across the city 7@y because they are a major distraction to already distracted drivers. Who thought ahoo. it would a great idea to place massive videos of more propaganda to encourage com residents and tourists to keep buying and making corporations richer. The last thing we need are flashing videos of ads while driving our vehicles and putting others' lives' in further danger. These LED digital video ads take our eyes off of the road and focuses our attention elsewhere. Ask yourself, What is the difference between those that text and drive on our roadways which is illegal? The answer is dear. Nothing. It accomplishes the same goal which is Less attention behind the wheel. In addition to the unappealing aesthetics of these signs, let's also add that these digital billboards use huge amounts of energy, and in turn contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and global warming. As concerned residents, we implore you to take immediate and decisive action to 15546 Submittal -Public Comments Submitted Online for the February 8, 2024 City Commission Meeting First Last Email Nam Nam Addre e e ss Addre Agend ss a Item Public Comment address this issue and remove these unwanted signs from our neighborhoods. It's obvious that our commissioners and mayors give priority to developers and corporations over their own citizens however we will NOT allow it to happen. I am here to say that we do not want these LED billboards in our communities. These companies come here to destroy our nature, our bays, oceans and green spaces which is the TRUE essence of Miami. And guess who ends up having to dean it up? We do. The threat of losing our skyline is being compromised on a continuous basis and we find ourselves having to fight for what's right. This is not Times Square, Las Vegas or Disney world nor do we have any desire to be. We urge the commission to send these LED billboards back where they came from (a company where their offices are in NY, CA and Ohio)and give time to other pressing matters that require immediate attention within our city. We, the residents of Miami, implore the commission to prioritize the well-being of our communities and future of our city by implementing sustainable initiatives that work with nature and not against it. What end of the moral spectrum do you want to be on. Do you prefer to care for and respect the citizens of our community or side with corrupt corporations looking to destroy Miami for monetary gain?
