A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION SUPPORTING, IN PRINCIPLE,
THE DEVELOPMENT OF A PUBLIC BOTANICAL GARDEN AT 6415 NORTHWEST 1
PLACE, MIAMI, FLORIDA; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") recognizes the value of preserving green spaces
within the urban core to enhance the overall well-being of its residents; and
WHEREAS, the property located at 6415 Northwest 1 Place, Miami, Florida, represents
one of the largest remaining significant green spaces in the urban core, featuring a unique'/4
acre spring -fed pond surrounded by native Everglades plants; and
WHEREAS, the property's distinct characteristics create a natural habitat for local wildlife
and contribute to the ecological diversity of the City; and
WHEREAS, the private owners propose to develop the parcel into a botanical garden
that aims to cultivate both native Florida and exotic plants, with an emphasis on education,
horticultural techniques, and the conservation of native endangered Dade County orchids
("Project"); and
WHEREAS, the Project aligns with the educational objectives of the Fairchild Tropical
Botanic Garden's Million Orchid Project, promoting the planting of orchids on trees throughout
the surrounding area; and
WHEREAS, the botanical garden seeks to serve as a space for community engagement,
offering lectures, workshops, and educational programs led by experts from horticulture,
education, and the arts communities; and
WHEREAS, the Project envisions collaboration with schools, parents, and local
organizations to provide an inclusive and hands-on approach to learning from nature; and
WHEREAS, the botanical garden aims to feature a sculpture garden curated by Naomi
Fischer, showcasing world -class local and international artists and serving as a home for her
arts; and
WHEREAS, the garden is anticipated to be a multifaceted space, accommodating
activities such as yoga, pilates, art sales, and fundraising events, contributing to its self-
sustainability; and
WHEREAS, it is in the best interests and welfare of the residents of the City to support
projects that provide sustainable green spaces, foster environmental conservation, and enhance
the cultural and educational fabric of our community;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Commission hereby supports, in principle, the development of a
public botanical garden at 6415 Northwest 1 Place, Miami, Florida.
Section 3. This Resolution does not waive any other requirements of the City Code or
Miami 21, including, but not limited to, applicable fees, regulations, inspections, and permit
requirements.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective upon its adoption.
