The opportunity of using this site fully (not only for storage) would

enhance and complement the area wherein Parks and Recreation are mostly

involved. The opportunity of visiting said building where you may receive
sailing classes, boxing, etc., as well as dancing instructions, watch a
rehearsal, attend a lecture -demonstration or choreography workshop seems
to reflect the commitment and cultural agenda of the city, truly a
leadership role. As Miami's Hispanic dance company, BCC takes pride
in honoring its heritage with class and passion while exploring and
incorporating others to create a dance program that pleases dance lovers.
This site, this home would symbolize hope to the young people in our
community for a place where one can obtain professional instruction and
perhaps a place of dance employment in the future.

"Not having studios will kill our theater."
Gwen Verdon
To date,17 major studios of world -renown teachers of ballet, modern dance, jazz, and tap
dancing, as well as four major rehearsal studios have been dissolved by sky -rocketing rents, tax pass-
alongs, and demolitions.
Help us fight back through public support and legislation.
PRELIMINARY PROPOSAL
ALTER\ATE 1:
a) Convert existing storage room and smaller adjacent storage space
east of it into a large 25 X 35 feet dance studio. This would be accomplished
by demolishing the wall that separates the spaces and introducing a steel beam
to support the existing roof structure.
b) Add a man's & woman's toilet and two dressing areas to the south side
of the storage room, and add two offices.
c) Utilize the large space directly south of the storage room for a small
studio space.
ALTERNATE 2:
a) Demolish existing small storage area and construct a large 30 X 40 feet
studio utilizing existing perimeter walls of Virrick GWm and Parks and Recreation
Building - add new floor and roof structure.
b) Utilize existing storage room for small studio -approximately 18 X 30 feet.
c) Add a man's & woman's toilet and two dressing areas to the south side of
the storage room.
d) Allocate a portion of the large space directly south of the storage room
and across the hallway for offices or upstairs on second floor level.
In both cases the company could offer classes to underpriviledged youth.
With pro%Zsions from the city for a portable stage 30 X 40 feet (with a marly floor)
and fabric canopy, dance concerts, contests and auditions could be held east of
the Virrick G)-m along side of the bay.
More detailed Proposal to be submitted upon city approval of Preliminary Proposal.

FACTS ABOUT BALLET CONCERTO - Miami's Hispanic Dance Company
BALLET CONCERTO COMPANY - BCC - was founded in 1964 by its artistic directors, Sonia
Diaz, Martha del Pino and Eduardo Recalt. The three former dancers and maitres of
the Cuban National Ballet, under the direction of Alicia Alonso, conceived, created
and developed Ballet Concerto in order to continue and preserve the long tradition of
pre -Castro Cuba in their new homeland - Miami. The Russian school of ballet using the
Vaganova method was introduced in Cuba by numerous teachers and artists in the 1950's
and became the impetus for the dance movement which captivated the island. The Cuban
school of ballet preserved the essence and spirit of the Russian training while adding,
through its director -Ms. Alonso, an American perspective gained fro= her long-time
association with the American Ballet Theatre.
In Miami, this commitment to classical ballet has been preserved and nurtured through
the work of Eallct Conccrtc. .61E conpa:.y has enriched the community with both benefit
and gala presentations. These performances have brought to Miami the whole scope of
classical ballet in productions such as Giselle, Swan Lake, La Bayaderka, La Fille,
in addition to leading interpreters of said masterpieces to Miami audiences. Luminaries
of the caliber of Carla Fracci, Natalia Makarova, the Panovs, the Koslovs, and a Miami
son - Fernando Bujones are just some of the guests in BCC's list of celebrities.
The Ballet Concerto School is a separate entity and provides instructions in the many
styles of dance: classical (all levels), Spanish classical 6 flamenco, jazz, Cuban
folklore, and a special music class for children 3 - 6 years of age. Company members are
selected from open auditions held in the fall annually and from the advance/professional
students of the school, which is the main source of dancers. Former students and dancers
of the school 6 company have gone to join companies throughout the world: Adelaida Munoz -
Ballet Nuevo Mundo Caracas; Lissette Piedra-Boston Ballet; Alina Hernandez -American
Ballet Theatre; Hilda Reverte-Pittsburgh Ballet; Mariana Alvarez -San Francisco Ballet;
and the internationally renown Fernando Bujones.
Ballet Concerto created the Cuban Folklore of Miami - an ensemble to represent and pre-
serve the Cuban aesthetic through dance, music, and song. The folkloric ensemble is a
stylistic interpreter of the traditional dances of Cuba - performed with a touch of class.
Throughout the company's history, ballet classes have been held in low-income areas to
expi,se and instruct children in underserved communities. Scholarships have been awarded
annually by the school of Ballet Concerto to these children. Special rehearsals and
programs have been made available to these children as well as seniors and handicapped.
BCC is governed by a Board of Directors, who are distinguished community members, are
90Z Hispanic, and serve on a volunteer basis without remuneration. In addition, the
board relies on a capable and professional staff of three artistic directors and one
managing director.
BCC is funded by the Season Sponsors, the Contributors, and by the National Endowment
for the Arts and the State of Florida -Division of Cultural Affairs, and the Florida
Arts Council, the NEA through the Southern Arts Federation of which the State of Florida
is a member and through the Expansion Arts Program, the Dade County Council of Arts 6
Sciences, the Metropolitan Dade County Board of County Commissioners, the City of Miami
Beach Visitors and Convention Authority, and the Florida Endowment for the Humanities.
