Re: Redesignation of a portion of the Wynwood Target Area
from `The Great Neighborhood" to 'Old San Juan."
Dear Vice Mayor Kennedy:
The neighborhood bounded on the north by N. W. 36th
Street, on the south by N. W. 29th Street, on the east Dy
No. Miami Avenue, and on the west by I-95, has for many
years been designated in federal documents and City of Miami
Community Development neighborhood plans as the "Great
Neighborhood."
The unfortunate federal designation has never captured
the imagination of the area's residents, nor has it ever
reflected or captured the inherent artistic values that have
naturally developed within the described area, i.e. the Bake
House Art Complex, the Fashion District, the Design District
and the influx of artists that have moved into the
aforementioned area. The name has never become a rallying
point for neighborhood pride or neighborhood improvement.
For 30 years this general area has been initially identified
with the aspirations of the Miami Puerto Rican community,
and still is most identified in the minds of Miamians as the
area to go for Puerto Rican foods, products, publications,
social services or cultural events.
The area proposed for name redesignation has also long
been the primary area in Miami identified with Puerto Rican
interests.
Preliminary polls of owners and residents in and around
the designated area have shown overwhelming support for the
proposed name change. The same polls show no name
recognition for the existing name.

As you are aware the Wynwood Community Economic Development
Corporation has been reorganized and has formed The Miami Fashion
District Merchants Association. And, most recently, the
Community Development Advisory Board elections held in the
Wynwood neighborhood, supported overwhelmingly the proposed "Old
San Juan" concept. A true cross section of groups present at the
election supported the redesignation.
On behalf of these neighborhood groups, we request that you
present a resolution for the passage by the Miami City Commission
formally changing the name of the above defined area from the
"Great Neighborhood" to "Old San Juan.."
We would appreciate being informed of your favorable decision
to present this issue to the Com,-nission with the date and time cf
said presentation.
Should you require any additional information please contact
me directly at 576-0440.
