CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAM
of the City of Miami
"TRAIN UP A CHILD IN THE WAY HE SHOULD GO; AND
WHEN HE IS OLD, HE WILL NOT DEPART FROM IT.
PROVERBS 22o6.
The idea of rewarding underpriviledged children
who excel in school and community activities
first originated in 1981 with the Overtown Cri-me
Prevention Sub -council and the Aia:ni Police
Os=nA rf mPTl 1-
L
The Overtown Crime Prevention Send -A -Kid to Camp
program is an inovative approach to crime
prevention for the youths of Overtown. all of
our past participants in the summer camp program
benefited tremendously from the experience. They
returned to their communities with a great sense
of pride and self-estaam.
Unfortunately, last summer we were not able to
send any kids to camp. This left a void in the
lives of a lot of Overtown youths who were
looking forward to going to camp. This year we
would like to continue in the tradition of
character building by sending at least 25 yoLztils
to camp at a cost of $380.00 per child. No other
donated monies go to a more worthier cause with
such lasting positive results.
Thanking you in advance.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Ann -Maria Adker,
Chairperson
Overtown Sub -Council

equality that are their national heritage.
TO provide each camper an experience in
democratic living, to promote a spirit of love,
tolerance, and understanding.
TO encourage the development of leadership
skills.
TO develop social, athletic and recreational
skills.
TO encourage an appreciation of nature and
the environment.
v
PROGRAM at Camp McConnell is more than list of
acttvities or events. It is "the experience that lasts a
lifetime", SUMMER CAMP!
At Camp McConnell, campers have the opportunity to
participate in a variety of structured activities. Almost
every camper wants to spend some time at the
waterfront in CANOEING. The pool for SWIMMING
Gasses or recreational swims is, also, a busy active
center. Water -minded campers might also take part
in SPRINGBOARD DIVING. For those with athletic in-
terests, the SOCCER, BASEBALL, TENNIS, or BAS-
KETBALL areas may be the place to be; or mn.ybe,
the camper prefers GYMNASTICS or AEROBICS.
And, what would camp be without a NATURE STUDY
AND PIONEERING program? Important, too, is the
project for Mom and Dad from ARTS & CRAFTS.
Then there's Camp McConnell's most popular
program. HORSEBACK RIDING Wait, there's more!
RIFLERY for older campers or BS gun for younger
ones; and, not to forget ARCHERY, or NEWSPAPER,
or WEIGHT TRAINING.
You can add to these instructed activities, free time
and Cabin's Choice activities like VOLLEYBALL.
HIKING, FISHING, PING PONG, SOFTBALL,
COOKOUTS, to name a few. Then there are those
special days like SADIE HAWKINS FIELD DAY with
WATERMELON EATING CONTEST, SWIM RACES,
GREASED PIG CHASES, RELAYS, and, to end the
day, the GREAT TUG-O-WAR over the gooey mud of
the camp's infamous "Das Pit".
And, for evening programs, CAMPFIRES,
HAYRIDES, the CAMP CARNIVAL, the GONG
SHOW, EVENING SWIMS, CAMPER/COUNSELOR
HUNT, SCAVENGER HUNTS, MOVIES, DANCES and
much, much more.
Each two week session features 2 out -of -camp trips.
Trips vary between sessions. However, some of the
trips we'll take are JUNIPER SPRINGS, PAYNES
PRAIRIE WILDLIFE PRESERVE, MANATEE
SPRINGS, THE JACKSONVILLE ZOO, and many
others.
SESSION IV is our 3-week SUPER SESSION and fea-
tures special programs and trips including trips to
WILD WATERS and TUBING DOWN THE
ICHETUCKNEE RIVER, an OVERNIGHT CAMPOUT
at BLUE SPRINGS and more.

BOYS AND GIRLS may enroll in camp.
Campers are assigned to cabin units on the basis of
age. Camp Is also divided, for purposes of program-
ming, Into JUNIOR CAMP ages 7 to 12, and
SENIOR CAMP ages 13 to 15. Junior Camp Is
tailored to the younger camper's need for close super-
vlslon and organized recreation. Senior Campers are
given greater freedom to set their own camping objec-
tives and to give leadership in certain areas of camp
life.
Camp McConnell takes great pride in Its LEADER IN
TRAINING (LIT) program for youth 15 and 16 years
of age. The LIT program Is a vital aspect of Camp
McConnell's commitment to leadership development.
Unlike most similar programs, participation in
McConnell's UT program Is by invitation only and
with no cost to the participant. Ail prospective UTs
must be former McConnell campers recommended
by their counselors and the Camp Director. Once
sRJerted, ! n's par!icipatc !n a 5-wes;c program of on-
dw job training as a volunteer assistant In one of our
younger camper cabins. There is also classroom and
conference work Many LITs go on to join our paid
staff In subsequent years.
HORSEBACK RIDING Is one of the camp's most
popular activities. It is an optional program for which
there is a fee of = per week. Campers may sign up
for as many or as few weeks of classes as they desire
p.e., z camper attending camp for three weeks may
sign up for 0,1,2, or 3 weeks of riding). Each week
consists of 5 lessons, including trail rides. Western
style riding Is taught with emphasis on fundamentals
and safety. Enrollment is limited and early registra-
tion is suggested.
CAMP STORE is an option available to all campers at
a fee of $10 per week. The store is open evenings
after supper and sells snacks, sodas, simple crafts,
Ice cream, camp paraphernalia, and emergency
basics (toothpaste. shampoo, etc.). Campers may
purchase camp store privileges for 1 to 10 weeks;
however, all purchases must be in increments of $10
per week,

cellence in camping. Camp McConnell is ac-
credited through the YMCA of the USA's Na-
tional Camping Standards program. This ac-

herence to 151 standards of performance cover-
ing such topics as: safety, health, personnel, ad-
ministration, facilities, transportation, etc.
Camp McConnell is committed to excellence
through community support and volunteer
leadership. The camp's Board of Directors
oversees and sets the direction of camp opera-
tions. These volunteers enlist from the ranks of
community leaders, camper parents, and
program participants. They serve for no reason
but their interest in youth and dedication to
quality camping.
Camp McConnell is committed to excellence
through staff leadership. Our camp Director,
Bill Dover, is Florida's senior YMCA Camp Direc-
tor, now in his 11th season at Camp
McConnell. He is supported by a staff of care-
fully chosen leaders, many of whom have come
up through the ranks of the camp's leadership
development program.
Camp McConnell is committed to excellence
in camper care. The camp doctor, a
pediatrician located in nearby Gainesville, has
been affiliated with us since 1973. A nurse is
on staff and in residence on a 24 hour a day
basis each summer.
Camp McConnell is committed to excellence
in programming. Using YMCA program
materials on values and lifestyles, we seek to en-
hance the campers' experience through a bet-
ter understanding of the Issues of values, well-
ness, and social adjustment.
