A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION CODESIGNATING
SOUTHWEST 23RD AVENUE BETWEEN FLAGLER AND SOUTHWEST 2ND
STREET, MIAMI FLORIDA AS "OFFICER OSVALDO CANALEJO AVENUE," IN
HONOR OF FALLEN CITY OF MIAMI POLICE OFFICER OSVALDO
CANALEJO, PURSUANT TO SECTION 54-137 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS AMENDED, THEREBY TRANSFERRING THE
CODESIGNATION MADE, PURSUANT TO RESOLUTION NO. R-02-633,
ADOPTED ON JUNE 13, 2002 THAT PREVIOUSLY CODESIGNATED
NORTHEAST 8TH STREET FROM NORTHEAST 1ST AVENUE TO
NORTHEAST 2ND AVENUE, MIAMI, FLORIDA "OFFICER OSVALDO
CANALEJO STREET"; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO
TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED
OFFICIALS.

WHEREAS, Miami Police Officer Osvaldo "Ozzie" Juan Canalejo, Jr. ("Officer Canalejo")
was born on March 14, 1964, in Havana Cuba, the only son of Osvaldo and Teresita Izquierdo
Canalejo; and
WHEREAS, Officer Canalejo immigrated to Miami at the age of four and attended Citrus
Grove Elementary School, Citrus Grove Junior High School, and Miami Senior High School,
where he graduated in the Class of 1982 and was active in the Rotary Service Club; and
WHEREAS, Officer Canalejo was also a talented athlete, having pitched for the Miami
Senior High School Stingrees his senior year, played in the Miami -Inter American Baseball
Academy, played basketball in Kiwanis of Little Havana Youth League, and played for the Miami
Police Department ("MPD") baseball team, where his teammates affectionately referred to him
as "Candy"; and
WHEREAS, Officer Canalejo joined the MPD on August 28, 1987 and was assigned to
the South Station in Little Havana; and
WHEREAS, Officer Canalejo became the 33rd MPD Officer killed in the line of duty
when his police vehicle was broadsided by a car that ran a red light on October 13, 1992; and
WHEREAS, on June 13, 2002, the City Commission, based on the recommendation of
the then existing Miami Street Codesignation Board, adopted Resolution No. R-02-0633,
codesignating certain thoroughfares in honor of fallen City of Miami ("City") Police Officers,
Firefighters and Employees of the Department of General Services Administration; and

WHEREAS, said Resolution codesignated Northeast 8th Street from Northeast 1st
Avenue to Northeast 2nd Avenue, Miami, Florida, "Officer Osvaldo Canalejo Street" in honor of
Officer Canalejo; and
WHEREAS, Officer Canalejo's family is requesting the transfer of the codesignation from
Northeast 8th Street from Northeast 1st Avenue to Northeast 2nd Avenue, Miami, Florida to
Southwest 23rd Avenue between Flagler and Southwest 2nd Street, Miami, Florida; and
WHEREAS, for the contributions made by Officer Canalejo to the betterment of City, the
City desires to honor Officer Canalejo and the wishes of his family by codesignating Southwest
23rd Avenue between Flagler and Southwest 2nd Street, Miami, Florida as "Officer Osvaldo
Canalejo Avenue," thereby transferring the codesignation made pursuant to Resolution No. 02-
0633 from Northeast 8th Street from Northeast 1st Avenue to Northeast 2nd Avenue, Miami,
Florida;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Commission codesignates that portion of street within the City's
jurisdictional limits of Southwest 23rd Avenue between West Flagler Street and Southwest 2nd
Street, Miami, Florida as "Officer Osvaldo Canalejo Avenue," thereby transferring the
codesignation from Northeast 8th Street from Northeast 1st Avenue to Northeast 2nd Avenue,
Miami, Florida previously made pursuant to Resolution No. R-02-0633.
Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the
Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, and Solid Waste; the Miami -Dade County Department of
Transportation and Public Works; the Miami -Dade County Commissioner of District 3; the
United States Postal Service; and, if a State of Florida road, to the Florida Department of
Transportation, District Six, for sign installation within the newly designated roadway.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
