A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION CODESIGNATING
SOUTHEAST 13TH STREET BETWEEN BRICKELL AVENUE AND BRICKELL
BAY DRIVE, MIAMI, FLORIDA AS "CARLOS ALBERTO MONTANER STREET,"
IN HONOR OF THE EXCEPTIONAL LIFE AND CONTRIBUTIONS MADE BY
CARLOS ALBERTO MONTANER; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK
TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN
DESIGNATED OFFICIALS.
SPONSOR(S): Commissioner Sabina Covo, Commissioner Manolo Reyes,
Commissioner Christine King
WHEREAS, Carlos Alberto Montaner ("Montaner"), born on April 3, 1943, in Havana,
Cuba, is a renowned author, journalist, and political commentator whose exceptional
contributions to literature, journalism, and the promotion of democratic values have earned him
international acclaim; and
WHEREAS, Montaner's activities in opposition of the Fidel Castro ("Castro") regime in
Cuba, including his involvement in underground movements and vocal opposition to the
Castro's regime, showcased his unwavering dedication to the cause of liberty, leading to his
imprisonment and persecution; and
WHEREAS, Montaner's courageous stance against the Castro dictatorship led to his
incarceration, where he endured harsh conditions and persecution for his outspoken beliefs,
demonstrating extraordinary resilience and moral strength; and
WHEREAS, Montaner's notable journalistic works such as "Perro Mundo" and "Otra Vez
Adios," and his influential contributions to the international daily publications "El Pais," "The
Miami Herald," and "CNN en Espanol," have not only informed and enlightened readers, but
also challenged societal norms and inspired critical thinking; and
WHEREAS, Montaner's role as a founding member of the Cuban Liberal Union, his
active participation in international campaigns advocating for human rights in Cuba, and his
leadership in organizations dedicated to promoting free speech have furthered the cause of
democracy and freedom; and
WHEREAS, Montaner's enduring legacy as a champion of freedom, democracy, and
justice serves as an inspiration to journalists, writers, and activists worldwide, fostering a global
dialogue on the importance of democratic values; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of Montaner's exceptional life, his anti -Castro efforts, his
courageous endurance of imprisonment, and his significant contributions to journalism and
literature, it is fitting and proper for the City of Miami ("City") to codesignate Southeast 13th
Street between Brickell Avenue and Brickell Bay Drive, Miami, Florida as "Carlos Alberto
Montaner Street;"

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Commission hereby codesignates that portion of street within the
City's jurisdictional limits of Southeast 13th Street between Brickell Avenue and Brickell Bay
Drive, Miami, Florida as "Carlos Alberto Montaner Street."
Section 3. The City Clerk is hereby directed to transmit a certified copy of this
Resolution to the City Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, and Solid Waste; the Miami -Dade
County Departments of Transportation and Public Works; the Miami -Dade County
Commissioner of District 3; the United States Postal Service; and, if a State of Florida street, to
the Florida Department of Transportation, District Six, for sign installation within the newly
codesignated street.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
