What is it about the Art in Public Places Board that is compatible with your experience and of specific interest to you, and why? Public Art has been part of my professional and personal life for many years. I've acted as administrator, artist, and will bring a unique and well-rounded perspective as an Art in Public Places Board member. I have experienced the value public art brings to communities by providing a sense of pride and belonging, while generously adding economic worth to property - in addition to the value adds or cultural tourism a[1d-'repeat visits. As a long-time Miami resident, I want to contribute my professional and personal knowledge, joy, experience, and expertise to further tii§vitalit9fof life in Miami through the arts. r^ ; 5. If appointed, what specific goals would you like to see the Public Art Board achieve, and w }iow:would you suggest accomplishing this? r- c,o One goal I would like to see is greater community involvement Whether it's through direct interaction and art making with protessitlrtal argil? or through innovative ways to share information about the benefits of public art. When the community is involved, the ability to transform and revitalize a place greatly increases. My suggestion is to engage with established cultural organizations or events and work together on visioning goals to enhance the direction of public art opportunities. I would also like to see greater didactic programming related to the public artwork and encourage new technology initiatives to keep pace with industry standards and to relate to younger audiences. Prior to that I was the Historical Resources and Cultural Arts Director. In that capacity I worked very closely with Catherine Cathers and have known her for fifteen years. She is the Arts and Culture Specialist for the City of Coral Gables and staffs the Coral Gables Cultural Development Boards and Arts Advisory Panel. She managers the Art in Public Places Program and is the Administrator for the Cultural Grants Program for the City. It is because of Catherine that the City of Coral Gables has received event recognition by Art Basel since 2016. She has also been recognized by the City as Employee of the Month. She is the ultimate multitasker and was a pleasure to work with. She is extremely competent — organized, passionate and knowledgeable about art. Now, as a resident of Coral Gables, I eagerly watch for the latest art acquisitions knowing that Catherine has it all under control. She's wonderful with the residents and the elected officials which is sometimes not easy. In summary, I highly recommend Catherine Cathers for the City of Miami Art in Public Places Board. She will definitely be a valuable asset to the Board and I am proud to call her my friend. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Sincerely, Dona M. Ms. Cathers' knowledge, talent and drive allow her to adroitly navigate the complex waters that commissioning art for the public entails. She considers and addresses the needs of the public, business owners, city officials, board members, and, equally important, artists. Given all the hurdles involved I am constantly in awe of her ability to efficiently move challenging projects forward with immense respect for all parties and budgets.
