A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION RECOGNIZING THE SECOND
MONDAY OF OCTOBER EVERY YEAR AS "COLUMBUS DAY" AND "INDIGENOUS
PEOPLES' DAY" WITHIN THE CITY OF MIAMI ("CITY") AND COMMITTING TO
FOSTERING AN INCLUSIVE AND DIVERSE ENVIRONMENT WITHIN THE CITY
THAT ACKNOWLEDGES AND RESPECTS THE RIGHTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS OF
ALL INDIVIDUALS; DIRECTING THE CITY MANAGER TO BRING FORTH FUTURE
LEGISLATION TO AMEND SECTION 40-108 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI,
FLORIDA, AS AMENDED, TO MAKE REFERENCE TO COLUMBUS DAY AND
INDIGENOUS PEOPLES' DAY; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

MONDAY OF OCTOBER EVERY YEAR AS "COLUMBUS DAY" AND "INDIGENOUS
PEOPLES' DAY" WITHIN THE CITY OF MIAMI ("CITY") AND COMMITTING TO
FOSTERING AN INCLUSIVE AND DIVERSE ENVIRONMENT WITHIN THE CITY
THAT ACKNOWLEDGES AND RESPECTS THE RIGHTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS OF
ALL INDIVIDUALS; DIRECTING THE CITY MANAGER TO BRING FORTH FUTURE
LEGISLATION TO AMEND SECTION 40-108 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI,
FLORIDA, AS AMENDED, TO MAKE REFERENCE TO COLUMBUS DAY AND
INDIGENOUS PEOPLES' DAY; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, the second Monday of October each year is recognized as "Columbus Day"
within the City of Miami ("City"); and
WHEREAS, the indigenous peoples of the City of Miami and throughout the world have
contributed immeasurably to the cultural, historical, and social fabric of our community; and
WHEREAS, the recognition and celebration of Indigenous Peoples' Day is an
opportunity to honor and respect the unique heritage, history, and contributions of indigenous
peoples; and
WHEREAS, the acknowledgment of the harm and injustices inflicted upon indigenous
peoples throughout history, including those attributed to Christopher Columbus, serves as an
important step towards reconciliation and understanding; and
WHEREAS, the observance of Indigenous Peoples' Day promotes the importance of
preserving and respecting the traditions, languages, and cultures of indigenous communities;
and
WHEREAS, it is the responsibility of the City to foster an inclusive and diverse
environment that acknowledges and respects the rights and contributions of all individuals;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Commission recognizes the second Monday of October each year
as "Columbus Day" and "Indigenous Peoples' Day" within the City of Miami and commits to
fostering an inclusive and diverse environment within the City that acknowledges and respects
the rights and contributions of all individuals.
Section 3. The City Manager is hereby directed to bring forth future legislation amending
Section 40-108 of the Code of the City of Miami, Florida, as amended, to make reference to
Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective upon its adoption.
