A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION SUPPORTING THE SELF-
DETERMINATION RIGHTS OF THE RESIDENTS OF THE LITTLE GABLES AREA
("AREA") TO CONSIDER A 2023 ANNEXATION PETITION FILED BY THE CITY OF
CORAL GABLES ("CORAL GABLES") THROUGH REFERENDUM; EXPRESSING NO
OBJECTION BY THE CITY OF MIAMI TO CORAL GABLES' UPCOMING 2023
PETITION FOR THE ANNEXATION OF THE AREA; DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK
TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE OFFICIALS LISTED
HEREIN; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, the southern boundaries of the City of Miami ("City") share a border with the
City of Coral Gables ("Coral Gables") and an area of unincorporated Miami -Dade County
("County") known as the Little Gables area ("Area"); and
WHEREAS, the Area is currently an enclave surrounded on three of four sides by Coral
Gables; and
WHEREAS, Coral Gables believes it can provide improved Police and Fire/Rescue
response times and services to the Area; and
WHEREAS, Coral Gables has recently initiated the necessary steps to annex the Area;
and
WHEREAS, Coral Gables must adhere to the requirements of the County Code and
Charter, including obtaining consent from at least 20% of the electors in the Area for the
annexation petition; and
WHEREAS, assuming Coral Gables garners the required support for the petition and the
County approves the annexation, the electors in the Area will have the opportunity to approve or
disapprove the annexation through an election; and
WHEREAS, as an adjacent community, the City wishes to support the self-determination
rights of the Area's residents to consider annexation; and
WHERAS, the City expresses no objection Coral Gables' planned annexation petition for
2023; and
WHEREAS, the City also supports annexation of the Area without requiring financial
contributions from Coral Gables to the County; and
WHEREAS, in accordance with Section 2-33(f) of the Code of the City of Miami, Florida,
as amended ("City Code"), the City Commission, by a majority vote, hereby deems this
Resolution to be of an emergency nature;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Commission hereby supports the self-determination rights of the
residents of the Area to consider a 2023 annexation petition filed by Coral Gables and
expresses no objection to Coral Gables' upcoming 2023 petition for the annexation of the Area.
Section 3. The City Clerk is hereby directed to transmit a certified copy of this
Resolution to the Mayor and Commissioners of Coral Gables.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective upon its adoption.
