Art in Public Places Board Application
Short Statement of Qualifications
1. Describe the qualities, experience, expertise and abilities that you possess that
would make you an effective Art in Public Places board member that will act in the
public interest.
I am passionate about the arts. I connect well with others and enjoy collaborating to
meet goals and objectives. The qualities I possess are commitment, motivation and an
exceptional work ethic. I have lived in Miami over 20 years and have seen the city
grow culturally. This is an exciting time to be part of the Board for Art in Public Places.
I am an active community volunteer and enjoy meeting residents and visitors to our
great city. My experience as a business owner, visual designer, active community
volunteer and a parent brings a strong, diverse perspective to the Board.
2. Describe your educational background and or general knowledge of the Arts.
I received a Bachelors of Business Administration from the University of Miami.
While receiving my degree in Finance and Marketing, I worked at an art gallery and
custom framing business. I was fortunate to meet many local and international artists.
I was technically trained and learned the Smithsonian standards for custom framing
and art preservation. I represented the gallery as a buyer at local and international art
and gift shows.
When I started my fashion career in New York City, I spent my free time at galleries and
museums throughout the city. I have incredible friendships with artists, designers and
gallery owners. The past ten years I have worked in visual design at companies and for
private clients. Keeping relevant in the art scene and with art and fashion trends has
been imperative to the longevity and success of my career.

3. Describe any prior community or personal involvement that you may have had that
demonstrates interest in the Visual Arts, Public Art or the Performing Arts.
My personal involvement in the visual arts has been my career as a visual designer. I
have worked independently and in large groups on various installations. I have
received visual design awards for my independent work as well as awards for group
projects. My interest is designing and presenting displays that are modern, youthful
and aspirational. I am interested in creating displays that bring people together for
discussions and learning about other thoughts and perspectives.
I was a former actor and model so have considerable interest and appreciation for the
performing arts.
4. What is it about the Art in Public Places Board that is compatible with your
experience and of specific interest to you, and why?
Being a member of the Art in Public Places Board is compatible with my experience as
it merges my enthusiasm and background in the arts along with my interest and
appreciation of meeting and working with new people and cultures. I am interested in
bringing art into the community for everyone to see and enjoy. Art can be used as a
vehicle to bring our community together. I feel we need more understanding and
acceptance in our world. Art can bring happiness and laughter.
Being part of the Board is of specific interest to me as I enjoy working on projects and
installations that causes people to stop and think or reflect about it. Art has
accomplished its goal if it provokes interest, imagination or creativity to all that
experience it. To be part of a team that is responsible for providing artistic moments
throughout our city would be an absolute honor.
5. If appointed, what specific goals would you like to see the Public Art Board achieve,
and why? How would you suggest accomplishing this?
I would like to see the Board have more community input and participation with the
projects. Miami reflects a diverse spectrum of beliefs, cultures, and traditions. The
Board is a small group, I feel they need to hear increased input and participation from
the community. This can be accomplished by increasing outreach to specific
communities, involving youth groups and non -profits. I believe in the future and
collaborating and involving schools, local youth centers and social networks brings a

new and fresh perspective. It connects art to the life and energy of the city. Involving
the community and being interested in the opinions of our youth can open doors and
opportunities about art and culture to individuals that might not have had the
opportunity to experience it previously. Experiencing and discussing art, added with
the benefits of getting outside to witness it, are a win -win scenario for residents and
visitors of all ages.

Kindly accept this letter of recommendation in support of Jill Tolan's application to the
Art in Public Places Board for the City of Miami.
I have known Jill for 12 years on a personal and professional level. I first met her when
I was the assistant to the general manager at Bloomingdale's and she was on the visual
design team. Jill is friendly, outgoing and knowledgeable in her field. She was
motivated and punctual. The displays and visual tables she created were aesthetically
beautiful and always had some sort of fun twist. She is incredibly enthusiastic about
the arts and local art programs.
Jill and I have also worked together as community volunteers. She is very
environmentally conscious. We have both participated in local beach community cleanup
projects. She has the ability to connect with people of all different backgrounds and
always has a positive outlook.
Jill will bring a diverse and positive impact to the Board. She will be a pleasure to work
with and collaborate with. Please feel free to contact me with any further questions. I
can be reached at 786-449-1280.
