IRA P. DAVIS STREET" PURSUANT TO SECTION 54-137 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS AMENDED; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICIALS. WHEREAS, Doctor Ira P. Davis ("Dr. Davis") graduated from Howard University School of Dentistry in 1929 and in 1936 moved his dental office to Overtown in the City of Miami ("City"); and WHEREAS, Dr. Davis, a social and political activist whose educational, professional, and military experience well prepared him to speak out about racial injustice in Miami, Florida; and WHEREAS, Dr. Davis, believing that black patrolmen and a precinct in the black community would provide a greatly needed law enforcement presence, but one that demonstrated sincere interest in the black community, joined the committee that successfully lobbied for the establishment of the Negro Police Force in 1944; and WHEREAS, Dr. Davis was the first Negro District Commander of the American Legion Department of Florida; and WHEREAS, Dr. Davis was a member of the committee that successfully negotiated for Black Americans to be admitted to the Orange Bowl stadium, as well, as helped bring the Orange Blossom Classic to Miami, Florida; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami Commission wishes to honor the significant historical contribution and community benefit that Dr. Ira P. Davis made to the City and community by co - designating Northwest 16 Street between Northwest 2nd Avenue and Northwest 3rd Avenue, Miami, Florida as "Dr. Ira P. Davis Street"; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Commission hereby co -designates Northwest 16 Street between Northwest 2nd Avenue and Northwest 3rd Avenue, Miami, Florida as "Dr. Ira P. Davis Street". Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, Solid Waste, the Miami -Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works, the United States Postal Service, and, if a State of Florida road, to the Florida Department of Transportation, District Six, for sign installation within the newly designated roadways.
