A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION CO -DESIGNATING
SOUTHWEST 21 AVENUE BETWEEN SOUTHWEST 4 STREET AND
SOUTHWEST 8 STREET, MIAMI, FLORIDA AS "FRANK PEREZ AVENUE"
PURSUANT TO SECTION 54-137 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI,
FLORIDA, AS AMENDED; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO
TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED
OFFICIALS.
SPONSOR(S): Commissioner Joe Carollo
WHEREAS, Frank Perez ("Mr. Perez") is the founder and former owner of the Frank
Joyeria store located at 2059 Southwest 8 Street, Miami, Florida; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Perez fled Cuba to Chicago, Illinois due to the start of the Cuban
Revolution in 1959; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Perez moved to the Miami, Florida to join the Brigade 2506 and took
part in the historic Bay of Pigs Invasion, where he was taken as a prisoner of war; and
WHEREAS, upon Mr. Perez's release, he made Miami his new home and began selling
unique Cuban style jewelry; and
WHEREAS, on April 11, 1962, Mr. Perez opened his first store, Frank Joyeria, which
eventually became a household name and is the oldest Cuban jewelry store in South Florida;
and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Commission wishes to honor the significant historical
contribution and community benefit of Frank Perez to the City and community by co -designating
Southwest 21 Avenue between Southwest 4 Street and Southwest 8 Street, Miami, Florida as
"Frank Perez Avenue";
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Commission hereby co -designates Southwest 21 Avenue between
Southwest 4 Street and Southwest 8 Street, Miami, Florida as "Frank Perez Avenue".
Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the
Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, Solid Waste, the Miami -Dade County Department of
Transportation and Public Works, the United States Postal Service, and, if a State of Florida
road, to the Florida Department of Transportation, District Six, for sign installation within the

newly designated roadways.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
