Four transit corridors get accompanying development plans
BY GABPIELA HENRIQUEZ STOIKO W
As the Strategic Miami Area
Rapid Transit Programs six cor-
ridors advance, the county's transit
department is working on Transit
Oriented Development master pl ans
for four of them.
ATransit Oriented Development
(TOD), as described by the Depart-
ment of Transportation and Public
Works, is a "fast-growing comunu-
nity development trendthat includes
amixed-useothousing,office, retail
giro- and/or amenities integrated
into a walkable neighborhood and
located within ahalf-mile of public
transportation."
The department received four
grants from the Federal Transit
Administration (FTA) to compre-
hensively plan the market, bike
and pedestrian gaps, station area
and water and sewer infrastructure,
among others, before development
of the corridors.
In 2017, the department got
$960,000 fromthe FTAfcrehe plan-
ning pilot program ofthe East-West
Condor along SR 836/Dolphin
Expressway from the Miami Inter -
modal Center to Southwest Eighth
Street at 147thAvenue. Thecounty is

dent Transportation Trust (CITT),

At a May 26 must meeting, county
transit and public works Director
Aventura's rail station
to be done by October
BY GABRIELA HENRIQUEZ STOIKOW
By the end of October, nders
would be able to use the Aventura
rail station being built by Brightline
on county land. The S76 million
taxpayer -funded station is to con-
nect Brightline trains naming from
downtown Miami to Aventura and
up to Fort Lauderdale, West Palm
Beach, and eventually to Orlando.
Brightline has completed ceiling
framing, HVAC system, the electri-
cal rough [m], and the installation
ofthe window frames, Brian Kron-
berg, vice president ofdevelopment
for the company, told the Citizens'
Independent Transportation Trust
last week.
Ongoing activities within the
station include installation of light
fixtures and bathroom tile. The
stairs to be used by the public that
protrude from the building are be-
ing fabricated, Mr. Kronberg said.
The rail infrastructure also con-
tinues to advance, he said "We've
completed a number of key activi-
ties that included shifting the east
and west main tracks, cleared the
billboards, installed the fiber duct
bank, as well as the fiber itself has
been installed in all but 200 feet,
which we're just working through
with the City of Aventura," Mr.
Kronberg said.
Brightline is working on a permit
to complete the fiber installation
on the site that is expected to be
completed in "a few weeks," he
said "That is outside the platform
limit, so it does not impact any of
the station construction work."
The county and the company
entered an agreement in October
l ast year to build a pedestrian bridge
Brian Kronberg: rail advancing.
from Bnghtline's planned passen-
gerrail station platform across Bis-
cayne Boulevard near 197th Street
to an outparcel of Aventura Mall.
Under the agreement, the county
will get S4 million from the City of
Aventura to develop the east side
pedestrian bridge.
As part of a 2019 resolution, the
county and the company agreed that
Miami -Dade would "provide the
fimdingto Brightline forBnghtline
to procure the design and construc-
tion of a passenger rail station and
pedestrian bridge consisting oftwo
segments," the West Side Bridge
and the East Side Bridge.
Mr. Kronberg saidBrightline was
able to execute a letter of intent with
the owner of the outparcel. "What
that means is passengers will be
able to leave the platform, go up
the vertical transportation, go east
above Biscayne Boulevard, andget
dropped down onto the Aventura
Mall outparcel."
Brightline broke ground on the
project in September 2020. The
company temporarily stoppedtrain
service in March 2020 andresumed
operations in November 2021.
Eulois Cl eckley sai d the department
was expecting to receive the level
of environmental assessment that
the project requires.
The South Corridor, running
from Homestead to downtown
Miamionanexclusiverightof-way
parallel to US 1, received over Si
million from the FTA; the CiTT is
to match that with S260,000. The
Transportation Planning Organiza-
tion also selected Bus Rapid Transit
as the preferred altemative. The
study is to begin in summer and
end in 2023.
The corridor, which is to use only
battery electric buses, was to be
rolling in January 2023, but supply
chain issues pushed the schedule
back one year, Mr. Cleckley ex-
plained in a previous meeting.
in 2020, the Beach Corridor, con-
necting the Miami Design District/
Midtown to downtown Miami and
Miami Beach, received $900,000
from the FTA to complete the Tran-
sit Oriented Development master
plan, and CITT is to locally match
that with S225,000 for the study.
which is to begin this year and be
done in 2024.
"This project hasn't started, but
we are currently already undergoing
the selection process [of a consul-
tant] and we're shooting fora notice
to proceed to happen at some point
before the end of this year, with a
kickoff meeting to follow," Mr.
Arbelaez said
In 2020, TPO selected elevated
rubber -tire vehicles as the preferred
alternative for the corridor. As Mi-
anti Today previously reported, the
monorail development is under an
interim agreement with developer
MBM partners — Miami Beach
Monorail Consottitan led by Merid-
ian Investors and Malaysian casino
company Caning —the only bidder.
The North Corridor TOD study
received S405,000 from the FTA,
and CMTTistoput inS101,250.
"'This project has not started; it
was just recently awarded and
we're shooting for this project to
begin in 2023," Mr. Arbelaez said.
The anticipated completion of the
study is 2025, a presentation from
the department details.
"The North Corridor is the last
grant that we received, so we
haven't finalized the scope with
FTA," Mr. Arbelaez said. "They
did give us less money than what
we asked for, so we have to rethink
our scope to make sure we can do
something that's going to be good
for the corridor."
TPO picked heavy rail as the pre-
ferredalte nativeforthecorridor,and
it is now under an open solicitation
for bids, said Maria Perdomo, transit
department program manager.
The North Corridor has a capital
cost ofroughly $ 1.9 billion with an
operating cost of about S49.4 mil-
lion yearly, Nilia Cartaya, Modal
Development Office administra-
tor of the Florida Department of
Transportation, District Six, told a
previous meeting.

DIARIO LAS AMERICAS
DEL VIERNES 1 AL JUEVES 7 DE JULIO DE 2022
Celebremos la
libertad con orgullo
y patriotismo
MADELINE PUMARIEGA
PRESIDENTA DEL MIAMI DADE COLLEGE
OPINION
El 4 de julio es la celebra-
cion veraniega mas im-
portance del pais. Es el
Dia de la Independencia,
que conmemora la firma
de la Declaration de Inde-
pendencia en el 1776. Nue-
vamente seremos parte de
las festividades, los fuegos
artificiales y las parri-
lladas. La emblematica
bandera estadounidense
ondeara en cada rincon
representando el orgullo,
la union y el patriotismo.
Es una fiesta nacional
que cada ano nos invita a
reflexionar sobre su ver-
dadero significado. La in-
dependencia, como un
grado de libertad abso-
luta, para el pueblo esta-
dounidense y para una
comunidad inmigrante
integrada a la historia de
este gran pais.
En la proximidad del
evento y como inmigrante
cubanoamericana, de se-
gunda generation, viene
a mi mente una celebre
frase del procer cubano
Jose Marti: "La libertad
es el derecho que tienen
las personas de actuar li-
bremente, pensar y hablar
sin hipocresia".
La misma, que repre-
senta al propio derecho
universal, que todos tene-
mos al nacer,y que es usur-
pado a quienes nacen en
pueblos sometidos a siste-
mas totalitarios. Entre los
derechos humanos tam-
bien se incluye la libertad
de expresion, la education
y el trabajo, y el que ningun
ser humano sea sometido a
esclavitud, ni torturas por
defenderlos a cabalidad.
Han pasado mas de seis
decadas y el estado dicta-
torial en Cuba continua
en su terrible marcha, asi
coma la falta de oportuni-
dades economicas y la re-
presion de las libertades
individuales. Y hoy puedo
decir que me siento tan
agradecida de haberme
librado de aquella desgra-
cia, gracias a la valentia de
mis padres, a quienes la
opresion los obligo a salir.
Recuerdo con nostalgia
mi nifiez en la cuidad de
Hialeah, cuando llegaba a
mi casa aquel familiar de
paso que huia del regimen
en busca de una mejor
vida y a quien todos apo-
yabamos. El trabajo duro
y la humildad son valores
que aprendi en una comu-
nidad que acoge a miles de
inmigrantes cubanos desde
la decada de los anos 1960.
En las liltimas decadas,
las semillas plantadas por
padres inmigrantes y los
desafios a los que se han
enfrentado, estan dando
frutos en sus hijos. Ellos
pertenecen al exito econo-
mico de esta nation; son li-
deres, maestros, medicos,
cientificos, policias, bom-
beros, funcionarios p1i-
blicos y empresarios que
representan a una fuerza
laboral, que integra a na-
tions de Latinoamerica y
es parte de la inclusion cul-
tural de los Estados Unidos.
Seglin el ultimo censo de
2020, la poblacion hispana
supera los 59 millones de
habitantes. Y una gran ma-
yoria de ellos, busca la edu-
cacion en un pais libre y
democratico.

Tri-Rail gets new engineer at throttle in bid to reach Miami
By GABRIE A HENRIQUEZ S oacow
The South Florida Regional
Transportation Authority, respon-
sible for extending Tri-Rail com-
muter rail service across county

director six months after the cur-

tion that have delayed Tri-Rail's
trains getting into the station.
David Dech, current vice presi-
dent of rail operations of Austin,
TX, public transit company Capital
Metro,will replace StevenAbrams
in August. Once he joins Tri-Rail,
Mr. Dech said his three priorities are
to complete the downtown Miami
link, continue to provide consistent
service to riders, and "peel back"
the finances.
"By finishing what you started —
Miami — then you start rebuilding
the bust and relationship that you
have with the public," Mr. Dech
said "I've always felt that you don't
force people to transit, you provide
a service that people want to ride,
you provide a service that is better

There will be a 30-day transition
in which Mr.Abrams and Mr. Dech
are to work together to make the
leadership change as smooth as
possible.The incoming chairwom-
an, Miami -Dade Commissioner

• Falsificacibn o use in-

Es triste ver que una

Muchas veces la victima
piensa que esta firmando
un tipo de documento
legal y en realidad es un

Estos papeles les otorgan

Aunque los estafadores
emplean una gran varie-
dad de tacticas, hay cosas
que podemos hacer para
prevenir que logren come -
ter estas estafas y fraudes
contra las personas mayo-

• Establecer de ante-

• Visitar y estar en con-

• Saber con quien estan
en comunicaci6n y de que
hablan
• Revisar las escrituras
de sus propiedades
• Monitorear sus tran-

irregularidades
• Revisar sus reportes de
credito
• Organizar los docu-

Para proteger a nuestros
