A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION CO -DESIGNATING
SOUTHWEST 2ND STREET FROM SOUTHWEST 27TH AVENUE TO
SOUTHWEST 30TH AVENUE, MIAMI, FLORIDA AS "EDDY CALDERON
STREET" PURSUANT TO SECTION 54-137 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS AMENDED; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK
TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN
DESIGNATED OFFICIALS.

WHEREAS, on December 7, 1955, Eddy Calderon ("Calderon") was born in Luyano, a
neighborhood located in the capital of Cuba, La Habana; and
WHEREAS, as memorialized in Son y Sazon Cubano by Maria Argelia Vizcaino,
Calderon was considered a prankster of sorts as a youth because he would engage in
humorous imitations anywhere without noticing the solemnity of the activity; and
WHEREAS, Calderon had a restless character and a desire to live in freedom, inspired
by his father, a former political prisoner of the Castro regime; and
WHEREAS, because of his ideology, Calderon was only able to finish the equivalent of
high school in Cuba since further studies were limited for "revolutionaries" or supporters of the
Castro dictatorship; and
WHEREAS, Calderon fled Cuba in search of freedom and arrived in the City of Miami
("City") on February 15, 1979 d worked in factories and construction; and
WHEREAS, in the all of 1980, Calderon moved to New York with his wife and was
quickly recognized for his great artistic abilities by Vilma Plana, a great Cuban composer, and
was invited to his popular television show; and
WHEREAS, after making so many viewers laugh and becoming a local celebrity,
Calderon had jump started his artistic career and by 1982, was invited to perform at public
events and private parties; and
WHEREAS, during the 1980s, Calderon continued to create by writing poems and
songs, leading to a collection of over 100 songs, some of which were recorded by some of the
most famous singers in Latin America; and
WHEREAS, his popularity grew even further due to his ability to imitate others and his
ability to sing like Nelson Ned, Raphael, and El Puma, the best performers and Latin singers of
that time; and

WHEREAS, his most well-known performances and TV programs are: A Noventa Millas
broadcasted by Latin Miami TV; La Barca de Calderon on America TEVE broadcasted on
weekends; and his special participation in Mikimbin de Miami, within "La Mesa Retonta,"
perfectly playing his role as Fidel Castro; and
WHEREAS, his audience in the City remembers and misses him from the days of his
radio program La Timba de la Mariana, which he created, wrote, and animated every day as
well as the radio show he hosted called Saweseando, which was broadcasted on La Poderosa
670 AM; and
WHEREAS, after complications caused by COVID-19, Calderon passed away on
December 26, 2020 in the City leaving behind a legacy that will continue to impact the City's
Cuban exile community for many years to come; and
WHEREAS, the City would like to honor Calderon by co -designating Southwest 2nd
Street from Southwest 27th Avenue to Southwest 30th Avenue, Miami, Florida as "Eddy
Calderon Street"; ,f
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Commission co -designates that portion of Southwest 2nd Street
from Southwest 27th Avenue to Southwest 30th Avenue within the City's limits of Miami, Florida
as "Eddy Calderon Street".
Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the
Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, and Solid Waste; the Miami -Dade County Department of
Transportation and Public Works; the Miami -Dade County Commissioner of District 5; the
United States Postal Service; and, if a State of Florida road, to the Florida Department of
Transportation, District Six, for sign installation within the newly designated roadway.
Section 4. his Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
