City of Miami Legislation Resolution Enactment Number: R-22-0026 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 11310 Final Action Date:1/13/2022 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION CO -DESIGNATING NORTHWEST 3 STREET FROM NORTHWEST 12 AVENUE TO NORTHWEST 17 AVENUE, MIAMI, FLORIDA AS "CARIDAD `CARY' HERNANDEZ STREET" PURSUANT TO SECTION 54-137 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS AMENDED; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICIALS. WHEREAS, Caridad "Cary" Hernandez ("Hernandez") was born on February 15, 1927 in Cienfuegos, Cuba; and WHEREAS, Hernandez was a resident of the City of Miami ("City") for 62 years upon exiling from Cuba in 1960; and WHEREAS, Hernandez studied and graduated from Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee; and WHEREAS, Hernandez served as executive assistant to the founding fathers of the Latin Chamber of Commerce ("CAMACOL") for 32 years; and WHEREAS, Hernandez assisted and helped thousands of immigrants from all over the world obtain legal status in the United States; and WHEREAS, Hernandez also assisted and registered thousands of United States citizens to become eligible voters in the City; and WHEREAS, Hernandez worked daily in assisting the community with food and clothing distributions to the less fortunate through CAMACOL and St. Juan Bosco Catholic Church; and WHEREAS, Hernandez passed away on December 29, 2021; and WHEREAS, the City would like to honor Hernandez by co -designating Northwest 3 Street from Northwest 12 Avenue to Northwest 17 Avenue, Miami, Florida as "Caridad `Cary' Hernandez Street"; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Commission co -designates that portion within the City's limits of Northwest 3 Street from Northwest 12 Avenue to Northwest 17 Avenue, Miami, Florida as "Caridad `Cary' Hernandez Street". Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, and Solid Waste; the Miami -Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works; the Miami -Dade County Commissioner of District 5; the United States Postal Service; and, if a State of Florida road, to the Florida Department of Transportation, District Six, for sign installation within the newly designated roadway.
