A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION CO -DESIGNATING
SOUTHWEST 25TH STREET FROM SOUTHWEST 24TH AVENUE TO SOUTHWEST
27TH AVENUE, MIAMI, FLORIDA AS "LAS MUCHACHITAS DE VILLA MARIA
STREET" PURSUANT TO SECTION 54-137 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI,
FLORIDA, AS AMENDED; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT
A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICIALS.
WHEREAS, almost 60 years ago, a group of 40 brave Cuban -born girls arrived in the
United States through Operation Pedro Pan and were housed at Villa Maria, a shelter run by
Catholic Nuns in San Antonio, Texas; and
WHEREAS, those girls forged a bond of love and friendship as they learned to adapt to
their new environment and became known collectively as Las Muchachitas de Villa Maria; and
WHEREAS, Las Muchachitas de Villa Maria have remained friends for almost 60 years
to date and have been a tremendous source of strength that elevates the quality of life in every
community in which they live owing to their exemplary display of tenacity, courage, and
creativity; and
WHEREAS, Las Muchachitas de Villa Maria live in numerous communities throughout
the United States, with the majority of them living in the City of Miami ("City"); and
WHEREAS, Las Muchachitas de Villa Maria have made outstanding and commendable
contributions to every community in which they live, including the City; and
WHEREAS, the City would like to honor Las Muchachitas de Villa Maria by co -
designating Southwest 25th Street from Southwest 24th Avenue to Southwest 27th Avenue,
Miami, Florida as "Las Muchachitas De Villa Maria Street";
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Commission co -designates that portion within the City's limits of
Southwest 25th Street from Southwest 24th Avenue to Southwest 27th Avenue, Miami, Florida
as "Las Muchachitas de Villa Maria Street".
Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the
Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, and Solid Waste; the Miami -Dade County Department of
Transportation and Public Works; the Miami -Dade County Commissioner of District 5; the
United States Postal Service; and, if a State of Florida road, to the Florida Department of
Transportation, District Six, for sign installation within the newly designated roadway.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption
APPROVED AS TO FORM AND CORRECTNESS:
