HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-21-0484City of Miami Resolution R-21-0484 Legislation City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 11007 Final Action Date: 11/18/2021 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION CO -DESIGNATING SOUTHWEST 36TH COURT FROM SOUTHWEST 8TH STREET TO SOUTHWEST 11TH STREET, MIAMI, FLORIDA AS "CONCHA VALDES MIRANDA WAY" PURSUANT TO SECTION 54-137 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS AMENDED; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICIALS. SPONSOR(S): Commissioner Joe Carollo, Commissioner Manolo Reyes WHEREAS, Concha Valdes Miranda ("Valdes Miranda") was born on July 16,1928 in Havana, Cuba and became a songwriter and performer of Cuban music; and WHEREAS, Valdes Miranda is considered to be one of the most important composers of contemporary Bolero; and WHEREAS, Valdes Miranda's most renowned global success was "El Que Mas Te Ha Querido" ("The One Who Loved You the Most"), which was performed by legendary Spanish singer Dyango, was nominated for a Grammy, and reached #1 on the Billboard Latin Radio charts; and WHEREAS, Valdes Miranda is also the author of numerous songs performed by Olga Guillot, Tona la Negra, Celia Cruz, Lucia Mendez, Blanca Rosa Gil, Imelda Miller, Sandro, Tito Rodriguez, Felipe Pirela, Los Panchos, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Santos Colon, Alberto Vazquez, Maria Marta Serra Lima, Sophy, Dyango, Floria Marquez, Elena Burke, Ismael Miranda, Tito Nieves, Tito Puente, John Secada, Sergio Vargas, Jose Alberto "El Canario", Johnny Ventura, Cheo Feliciano, Moncho y Dyango, and others; and WHEREAS, many of Valdes Miranda's compositions have been used in Spanish and Mexican movies; and WHEREAS, in the early 1960s, along with a close-knit group of the most talented songwriters and poets arriving in the City of Miami ("City") from Cuba (fleeing the Cuban Revolution) including Jose Carbo Menendez and Elena Casals, Valdes Miranda founded the organization "La Sociedad de Compositores y Autores Cubanos en el Exilio" ("The Society of Exiled Cuban Songwriters and Authors"); and WHEREAS, Valdes Miranda was the first woman inducted into the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame at the inaugural LA MUSA AWARDS® in 2013; and WHEREAS, Valdes Miranda passed away on August 19, 2017; and City of Miami Page 1 of 2 File ID: 11007 (Revision:) Printed On: 6/5/2025 File ID: 11007 Enactment Number: R-21-0484 WHEREAS, the City would like to honor Valdes Miranda by co -designating Southwest 36th Court from Southwest 8th Street to Southwest 11th Street, Miami, Florida as "Concha Valdes Miranda Way"; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Commission co -designates that portion within the City's limits of Southwest 36th Court from Southwest 8th Street to Southwest 11th Street, Miami, Florida as "Concha Valdes Miranda Way". Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, and Solid Waste; the Miami -Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works; the Miami -Dade County Commissioner of District 7; the United States Postal Service; and, if a State of Florida road, to the Florida Department of Transportation, District Six, for sign installation within the newly designated roadway. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
