OCTOBER 21. 2021 Blockbuster 'The Magician' re -imagines Mann BY MARILYN BOWDEN Irish author Colm T6ibin's 2004 novel, "The Master," based on the life of Henry James, captured major literary awards on both sides of the Atlantic. With "The Magician," he tackles the life and times of another literary giant, the Ger- man writer Thomas Mann. Mr. T6ibin's exposition of the growth of the artistic tempera- ment is among the many gifts of this insightful re -imagining of a complicated protagonist, author of such classics as "Budden- brooks," "A Death in Venice" and "The Magic Mountain" and winner of the 1929 Nobel Prize in Literature. Born into an apparently well - respected family in the provin- cial German town of Lubeck, the young Thomas feigned interest in the family business. "Even distant cousins," Mr. T6ibin writes, "came to believe that ... young Thomas, alert and C (-) I, 'I grave in his demeanor, was the one would take the family firm into the next century." But the boy's facade hid an intensely imaginative inner life, in which he "allowed himself to become the woman in the painting on the stairwell with all her fervid desires, or someone who moved across the landscape with a sword or a song." He dreamt of how he would con- solidate the family business and with its profits support a life in arts the likes which no one in Lubeck had ever seen. The death of his father when Thomas was 15, leaving a will stipulating that the business be sold, changed everything. The boy's first reaction was that, since the family would be forced to leave Lubeck, "no matter where he went, he would never be important again." This longing for prominence and respect was, in Mr. Tbibin's rendering, a lifelong obsession. It drives Mann to decline busi- ness opportunities and choose to become a writer. A few years later, that same longing seems to have been behind his decision to marry, despite his homosexual- ity. The bride he chose was the twin sister of one of his infatu- ations - not the best recipe for a happy marriage, but the couple raised six children and remained together for more than 50 years. The times Thomas Mann lived through were as complex as the writer himself, from the First World War and the rise of Hitler, which sent the Manns into exile in the US, through the Cold War. Mr. T6ibin handles all of this material and a huge cast of characters with great assur- ance. The result is a blockbuster of a novel teeming with life. Colm T6ibin, who has written 10 novels, two story collections and many works of literary criticism, teaches at Columbia University. He will interact via Crowdcast with members of the Brickell Literary Society during a virtual event scheduled for I p.m. on October 27. (Details: 786- 691-4521 or contact@ brickellliterary.org) "The Magician," by Colm Toibin, 500 pages, is $28 hardcover from Scribner. De- tails: simonandschusler.com. CITY OF MIAMI. After the city commission ap- proved lease terms June 23 and authorized management to refer it to the Planning Board, which also approved it July 27, non-profit pro- granuning and performing group Miami New Drama has a negoti- ated a lease with the city in which it would have a year to come up with S250,000 to cover costs that include the design and architectural costs of the cultural center. Enrique Norten from TEN Arquitectos is to design the center. The city still would need to ap- propriate $4.75 million before Oct. I, 2024, Rickelle Williams, city economic development director, told commissioners Oct. 13. If not, the lease would be voided. "The lease would anticipate a term of five years initially, and then two additional five-year terms if the tenant is in good standing," she told commissioner at the meeting. "The final renewal term would be at the discretion of the parties." Miami New Drama would fund operations and the programming, she said, as well as day-to-day mainte- nance, while the city would handle larger maintenance responsibilities needed for major building systems, like HVAC - heating, ventilation and air conditioning. The to -be -built Collins Park cul- tural center would be at the Collins Park Garage at 23rd Street between Park and Liberty avenues. It would have 15,000 square feet on the first floor, 513 parking spaces and a 200- seat blackbox theater, MiamiToday previously reported. It would also haveacafe-thatwouldbe subleased at market rate - artists' rehearsal spaces and educational spaces, to serve public school students with youth enhancement programs, such as theater education, said Michel Hausmann, artistic director and co-founder of Miami New Drama. "There have been community benefits offers that have been ne- gotiated since June 23," said Ms. Williams. "Miami New Drama has agreed to work with our seniors, to provide summer camps [to kids] and to authorize discounts for our residents." Miami New Drama also agreed to include the City of Miami Beach in its logo and to brand, she added, and to promote the facility as being headquartered in Miami Beach.
