TUBMAN
do something right"
The American hero's
name written in strong
lettering on a freshly
panted sign marked a
turning page in history for
communities of color and
a lesson to be reminded of
what Tubman fought hard
against, speakers told the
crowd.
"We can not forget
slavery," Florida State
Rep. Dotie Joseph said.
"We can not forget the
ramifications of it"
The move to honor
Tubman as the new name
of Dixie Highway began
about two years ago with a
question from a then -high
school sophomore to her
activist grandfather.
On a dove with her
grandfather Modesto
Abery, Isabella Banos
heard the computerized
dice of a GPS system
eclare "Turn right on
South Dixie Highway."
"Why is it named Dixie
Highway?" Banos asked
her grandfather.
That question and the
research that followed is
what moved her and Abe-
ry to began waging a war
to remove Dixie from
street signs across Florida,
Banos said.
"It's been a long jour-
ney," Banos said. "To see
all of this in fruition and
finally see my first sign, I
can't describe the feeling.
I'm just so happy my
question limed into
something this signif-
ic
ant."
Banos wrote an essay
for the Miami Times in
2019 calling for the coun-
ty to rename Dixie High-
way after Tubman. Abety
sent an email to Moss and
the other 12 commission-
ers a draft resolution
to change the name as
well.
At the time in commis-
sion to discuss
whether they would re-
move Dixie, Moss ex-
plained its history.
"Dixie Highway was
named for the Dixie states
... The Dixie states se-
ceded from the Union
Flonda State Sen. Shaun Jones. District 35. speaks
dunng a ceremony ',nor to the unveiling of the sign.
because they wanted to
continue the inhumane
restitution of slavery."
Months of city and
county meetings ultimate-
ly found success. Nine
cities and Miami -Dade
County have passed reso-
lutions to remove Dixie
Highway road signs in
their respective city or
county.
However, today there
are still many more areas
of the more-than-5,000-
mile highway that run's
hough Florida and other
southern states that will
keep the Dixie name.
"There is still a lot of
work to be done in this,
but to stand here today
and have the sign unveiled
on U.S. 1 that says Harriet
Tubman Highway, many
of us probably thought this
would never happen,"
Moss said.

patient referrals.

ados, Isere elegible pare
Medicare?
8. Garcia, West Miami
No. Medicare comienza
cuando cvmple 65 anos. Si

Mi hijo esti discapaci-
tado, pero cuando soli -
cite SST, me dijeron que
mi hijo no era elegible
porque mi conyuge y ya
ganamos demasiado
dinero. IPor que nues-
tlos ingresos hacen que
mi hijo no sea elegible?
T. Silva, Miami
Si un vive con sus
padres biologicos o adop-
tivos, entonces algunos de
los ingresos que los padres
obtienen se le asignan al
da°. Gram estas canti-
des para determiner si
su hijo cumpie o no con
los requisitos no medicos
para SST. Pan obtener
mas inforrnacion, visite

lights/spot.deeming.htm.
Recibo beneficios por
discapacidad y mi pri-
mo tambien. Sus hijos
reciben beneficios en su
historiaL Acepte una
solicimd pars que mis
hijos recibieran benefi-
os, Pero me dijeron
que no eran elegibles
pare el pogo. iPor que
es ebto?
P. Palmer°, Hollywood
Hay algunas rezones
diferentes por las que un
nino podria no recibir
beneficios de un padre
cuando el padre recibe
beneficios por discapaci-
dad. Un ni6o debe ser
soltero, menor de 18 anos
o nor de 19 y 2 meses y
min ester inscrito en la
escuela secundaria. Un
hijo tam bien puede recibir
beneficios si estaba disca-
pacitado antes de cumpllr
los 22 anos. Si se cumplen
estas conditions y los
beneficios min no se pa-
gan, es posible que el
padre reciba la cantidad
maxima pagadera por ley
en su propio beneficio.
Ademes, si se Nate de una
compensacion pare Nab,
jadores, la cantidad adeu-
dada a los hijos puede
retenerse como pane de la
compensacion par com-
pensation pare uabajado-
res de los padres.
Para obtener detalles
especificos sobre su propio
resistro, comuniquese con
su oficina local del Segaro
Social o game al 1-800-
772.1213 (TTY 1-800-328-

gible pare recibir bene-
flclos de mi conyuge?
Y. Lopes, Marro Island

ble pare los beneficios del
Segura Social, usted po-
dria sec elegible pare la
mired de m beneficio
cuando tense la plena
edad de jubilation. Sin
embargo, si nabajo yes

cios del Segura Social en

pio beneficio puede sec
