"LEONARD J. HELMERS, JR. WAY" PURSUANT TO SECTION 54-137 OF THE CODE
OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS AMENDED; FURTHER DIRECTING THE
CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN

A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION CO -DESIGNATING THAT
PORTION WITHIN THE CITY OF MIAMI'S LIMITS OF SOUTHWEST 3 STREET
FROM SOUTHWEST 2 AVENUE TO SOUTHWEST NORTH RIVER DRIVE AS
"LEONARD J. HELMERS, JR. WAY" PURSUANT TO SECTION 54-137 OF THE CODE
OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS AMENDED; FURTHER DIRECTING THE
CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN
DESIGNATED OFFICIALS.
WHEREAS, Leonard J. Helmers, Jr. ("Helmers") was born and raised in Miami Springs,
Florida on October 30, 1950; and
WHEREAS, Helmers received his professional engineering degree from the University
of Miami where he studied Civil Engineering; and
WHEREAS, Helmers began his career with the City of Miami ("City") in 1973 as a part-
time Engineering Technician II for the Department of Public Works; and
WHEREAS, Helmers worked on many projects during his tenure with the City, including
the original design of David Kennedy Park in Coconut Grove; and
WHEREAS, in December 2006, after 33 years of dedicated service to the City, Helmers
retired as a Professional Engineer IV with the Department of Public Works; and
WHEREAS, in January 2007, the City re -hired Helmers as a temporary Professional
Engineer IV and he continued working in that capacity for an additional nine (9) years; and
WHEREAS, Helmers was widely known and respected for his knowledge, expertise,
and, most importantly, his integrity in the performance of his professional duties; and
WHEREAS, the City would like to honor Helmers by co -designating Southwest 3 Street
from Southwest 2 Avenue to Southwest North River Drive as "Leonard J. Helmers, Jr. Way";
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Commission co -designates that portion within the City's limits of
Southwest 3 Street from Southwest 2 Avenue to Southwest North River Drive as "Leonard J.
Helmers, Jr. Way".
Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the
Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, and Solid Waste; the Miami -Dade County Department of
Transportation and Public Works; the United States Postal Service; and, if a State of Florida
road, to the Florida Department of Transportation, District One, for sign installation within the
newly designated roadway.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
