A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION SUPPORTING THE
SUBMISSION OF A BID TO HOST THE 2022 C40 WORLD MAYORS SUMMIT;
FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY MANAGER TO TAKE ANY AND ALL ACTIONS
NECESSARY TO BRING THE SUMMIT TO THE CITY OF MIAMI.
WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") is a member of C40, a network of nearly 100 of the
world's greatest cities working to take bold climate action, leading the way towards a healthier
and more sustainable future; and
WHEREAS, C40 Cities are committed to delivering on the most ambitious goals of the
Paris Agreement at the local level, as well as cleaning the air we breathe; and
WHEREAS, C40 will hold the C40 World Mayors Summit in October 2022 ("Summit"),
the milestone meeting of C40 member cities, with three objectives: (1) showcasing a green and
just recovery from the novel coronavirus pandemic that creates jobs and promotes an inclusive
economy and resilient cities; (2) outlining that leadership by the world's mayors is essential for a
green and just recovery and towards equitable climate action; and (3) demonstrating efficient
public -private sector collaboration in the local phase of the pandemic, particularly in the stream
of economic recovery and social inclusion; and
WHEREAS, the City has an opportunity to host the Summit; and
WHEREAS, the City has a proven track record of successfully hosting national and
international events of prominence, including four (4) Superbowls, Bitcoin 2021, and numerous
medical, real estate, and tourism conferences; and
WHEREAS, several hundred international mayors, representatives, and prominent
dignitaries are expected to visit the host city during the Summit; and
WHEREAS, several thousand viewers around the world will focus their eyes on the host
city as they watch the event through social media; and
WHEREAS, hosting this momentous event in the City can provide a tremendous
opportunity to showcase the leadership the City has demonstrated throughout South Florida to
develop and implement innovative approaches to climate adaptation and mitigation; and
WHEREAS, hosting the C40 World Mayors summit in the City could bolster efforts to
grow a thriving, economically successful economy that supports clean energy, climate
technology, and innovation; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission recognizes the significance of hosting the Summit in
the City; and
WHEREAS, all bids to host the Summit must be submitted by July 23, 2021 and
selection of the host city by C40's steering committee will be made in September 2021; and
WHEREAS, in accordance with Section 2-33(f) of the Code of the City of Miami, Florida,
as amended, the City Commission, by a majority vote, hereby deems this Resolution to be of an
emergency nature;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Commission supports the submission of a bid to host the Summit.
Section 3. The City Commission directs the City Manager to take any and all actions
necessary to bring the Summit to the City.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
