City of Miami Legislation Resolution Enactment Number: R-21-0266 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 9216 Final Action Date:6/24/2021 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION CO -SPONSORING THE FILM TITLED "VERITAS" WHICH WILL BE SHOWN AT A CITY OF MIAMI OWNED FACILITY ON A DATE TO BE DETERMINED AND APPROVED BY THE CITY MANAGER ("EVENT"); WAIVING THE FACILITY RENTAL FEES ASSOCIATED WITH THE EVENT. WHEREAS, documentary filmmaker Eliecer Jimenez-Almeidas has produced a documentary film surrounding the events and people involved in the 1961 Bay of Pigs Invasion; and WHEREAS, between April 17, 1961 and April 20, 1961, more than 1,400 paramilitary troops landed and fought to attempt to free Cuba from its communist leader via the landing point of Playa Giron in the Bay of Pigs; and WHEREAS, this invasion force was preceded by bombing runs on Cuban airfields two (2) days prior; and WHEREAS, the invasion and attempted overthrow of the communist regime was unsuccessful; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") is known around the world for its vibrant Cuban American population and these residents are those same persons that have fled communist Cuba since 1959 and, fought for freedom in 1961 as well as their descendants; and WHEREAS, Mr. Jimenez-Almeidas is a graduate of the International Film and Television School located in San Antonio de los Banos, Cuba, participated in the Sundance Institute's Documentary Film Program in the City, his 2014 work Persona won Best Short Film Award at the Latino and Iberian Film Festival in 2016, and his film Now! released in 2016 denounces the repression of human rights by the Cuban government; and WHEREAS, his works as a multi -media artists have been displayed internationally in the United States of America, Europe, and Asia; and WHEREAS, the documentary film Veritas gives voice to those who fought and died 60 years ago in Cuba in a fight to free their homeland from tyranny; and WHEREAS, the City has several facilities such as the Manuel Artime Community Center & Theater ("Manuel Artime Theater") and the Olympia Theater ("Olympia") among other City owned properties which have the ability to host the showings of Veritas; and WHEREAS, a City -owned facility should serve as the venue for a viewing of Veritas ("Event") on a date to be determined and approved by the City Manager; and WHEREAS, the City desires to sponsor this Event and waive all City costs and fees for the rental of the approved City -owned facility, exclusive of third party fees ("Rental Fees"); NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Commission hereby co-sponsors the Event to take place on a date and at a City -owned facility to be determined and approved by the City Manager, subject to availability. Section 3. The City Commission hereby waives the City's Rental Fees for the Event. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
