August 4, 1941 -June 27,2009
In 1963 Mother Moselle Whisby and her husband Robert Lee Whisby
Sr, pursed their first home, located at 1545 NW 43 Street on the
corner in a predominantly white neighborhood, at the time they only
had four children and later having 6 more totaling 10 children raised
in that home. That was approximately 57 years ago, while raising
and doing her childbirth years Mother supported so many children
and their families that was in -need in the community no matter the
race, nationality, and religious backgrounds. With the families
seeing her love and compassion for her own family.
The demand for her service as a childcare provider started her first
in -home day-care business for the community and the church family
in the community. She soon recognized the need for a safe childcare
services among working mothers and single mothers that could not
afford the childcare service. That started her to support more
families and began volunteering her service to assist such families
living in the community we now call the Alley. Each afternoon,
Mother would be outside on her front porch (1545 NW 43 St.) to
care for neighborhood children who would otherwise go home alone.
The community knew Mother best for her gospel signing on her
front porch and reading Bible verse one of her favorite Bible verse
was Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and
when he is old, he will not depart from it. She breathes this bible
verse every day of her life. They also recognized and embrace her
love care and compassion she had for the youth. Mother grew to
become, the Matriotic to her family, neighborhood, community, and
City. Mother would mentor, encourage, pray and sing to hundreds
of children throughout the community, she never turns anyone
away. From the early stages, Mother saw the serious need for
childcare services and after school care when children from the
community would need her to help them with their homework and
school projects. Her love for helping children with homework on her
front porch speedily extended to her becoming a Title 1 After School
Tutoring Program Provider, where she volunteered at the local
school Kelsey L. Pharr Elementary to ensure the best quality of care
available for the children she defended in the community. Mother
would go to the homes of the children to assist with their
homework. Mother wanted to make sure that help children gain a
high -quality education and the skills to master the Florida
Standards.
Mother was very involved in giving back in her community where
she served as a board member on two -local organization under the
leadership of Ms. Elizabeth Jones, Allapattah Girl Scout Troop #409
and the Alpha Phi Sorority Miami Chapter. Mother was also a faithful
member of her church and would attend public meetings often.
It was important for her and her family to be members of the
Charles Hadley Neighborhood Homeowners Association, where she
was very concern about the change in the community. One of her
concerns was homeownership and busine,ss opportunity for African
American families in her community. Her giving back was real on
their block where her family would help to improve the beatification
in the community. Mother and Robert was also the owners of a
small construction business. Mother would administrate and
organize the business of the company and Mr. Robert was the
master contractor a born carpenter.
The children in the community would start to gather and hang out in
the alley, so Mother would seat on her front porch to keep her eyes
on all the neighborhood children to ensure their safety as a
Neighborhood Watchman to ensure the safety of youth.
That encourage her family to invest into the community and
purchase 5 properties in the Alley to ensure the residents in the
community have a decent and safe place to live and call home. In
her effort her neighborhood safe she would often speak and pray
with the young men and women in the Alley. Her focus was the
troubled teens that gathered in the Alley where drugs and other
illegal activities begin to form. With much counseling and prayer
with and for the trouble teens the drugs and illegal activities
dissipated ensuring her neighbors and her family would have a safe
caring living environment. There are many testimonies birth from
the life of Mother Moselle Whisby. The community will always
remember the lobar of love and community serves Mother Moselle
Whisby gave back to hundreds of neighborhood children that can
truthfully say if it had not been for her prayers, love concern and
care and compassion for her family and other they would not be
who they are today. It is an honor to take part in celebrating her
legacy.
