Un grupo de Iegisladores
democratas apuesta por
amplia r la Corte Suprema
de nueve a 13 jueces, pero
las posibilidades de 10-
grarlo parecen ser pocas
si tenemos en cuenta que
la propuesta ha sido re-
chazada por varios lide-
res del Congreso.
De hecho, el sena-
dor Ed Markey. demo -
crate de Massachusetts,
junto con el presidente
del Comite Judicial de
la Camara, Jerrold Nad-
ler, democrata de Nueva
York, y los miembros del
Comite Judicial Mon-
daire Jones, democrata
de Nueva York, y Hank
Johnson. democrata de
Georgia, anunciaron una
propuesta de ley que an-
ticipa cuando menos
confrontation.
"La Corte Suprema no
tiene equilibrio", senalo el
senador Markey. "Hay que
arreglarla", subrayo.
Segun el legislador, am-
pliar la Corte Suprema "ga-
rantizaria que se imparta la
misma justicia para todos"
y que edemas "arreglarla'
lo que considera "errores
hechos por los republica-
nos , en franca referencia a
la gestion del lider republi-
can° en el Senado, Mitch
McConnell, que procedio
con el nombramiento de la
jueza Amy Coney Barrett,
cuandoapenas restaba una
semana pare celebrar elec-
ciones presidenciales.
Compotticldn
Actualmente. el Supre-
moesta compuesto por
tres jueces nombrados
por presidentes demo-
cratas y seis magistrados
que fueron designados
por mandatarios republi-
canos, lo que es conside-
redo un desbalance, tres
supuestos liberales y seis
aparentes conservadores
que podrian voter acorde
a su pensamiento.
Entre los bltimos asun-
tos atendidos por el mas
alto tribunal nacional des-
taca el caso Uzuegbunam
vs. Preczewski, un joven
estudiante de Gwinnett
College que reclamo poder
hablar de religion en un
lugar de "libre expresion"
en la institution, pero fue
reprimido porque la uni-
versidad posee edemas la
restriction de "permitir la
libre expresion en el lugar
asignado siempre que no
moleste a otra persona'.
Otro estudiante tam-
bien fue reprimido por
la misma razon y junto a
Uzuegbunam pidio "me-
didas cautelares y danos
compensatorios", lo que fue
rechazado por un juez del
11°. Circuito.
El Supremo dio marcha
atras al fallo judicial y d icto
que "Uzuegbunam sufrio
violation complete de sus
derechos constituciona-
les. cuando la guardia hizo
cumplir las politicas sobre
expresion en su contra".
La elite democrata en la Ca-
mara Baja no parece estar
de acuerdo. al menos no
quieren asumir la tarea en
estos momentos, cuando
otros asuntos mas canden-
tes, como la pandemia y el
plan de reconstruction de
la infraestructura, estan en
juego.
Por ejemplo, la presi-
dents de la Camara, Nancy
Pelosi. dejo en claro que ac-
tualmente no apoya un pro-
yecto de ley para ampliar la
torte y que no tiene la in-
tencion de Ilevarlo a discu-
sion para ser votado.
"No". dijo Pelosi en su
conferencia de prensa
semanal, cuando le pre-
guntaron si apoyaba el pro-
yecto de ley.

adoptado por el presidente
Joe Biden, quien ordenoes-
